Eduard Cech 's father was Cenek Cech, a policemen, and his mother was Anna Kleplova. Eduard, his parent's fourth child, was born in Stracov which was in northeastern Bohemia but he attended the Gymnasium in Hradec Kralove where his talent for mathematics first became evident and he decided at this time that he wanted to be a school teacher of mathematics. He entered the Philosophy Faculty of Charles University of Prague in 1912, with the aim of becoming a school teacher. He had little interest in physics so he choose courses which were within the area of mathematics and descriptive geometry. Already Cech was studying mathematical texts which were much more advanced than the level of his courses and he spent much time in the Mathematics library. His studies were interrupted by World War I and, although he was able to complete three years of study, he was drafted into the Austro-Hungarian army in 1915. Cech spent three years in the army, but they were not totally wasted as far as his academic studies were concerned for he took the opportunity to learn Italian, German and Russian. When the war ended in 1918 he was able to return to the Charles University and complete the degree which allowed him to teach mathematics in schools.

(Alphabetically) Next Welcome page Eduard Cech 's studied at the Charles University of Prague but these studies were interrupted by World War I and, although he went there in 1912, he could not graduate before 1920. His interest in a new area of mathematics, namely projective differential geometry, led to his obtaining a scholarship to study with Fubini in Turin. He studied there between 1921 and 1922 and Cech was later to write two books with Fubini which were published in 1927 and 1931. After leaving Italy, Cech wrote his habilitation thesis, becoming a lecturer at Masarky University in Brno. There he lectured on analysis and algebra, becoming a professor in 1928. Cech became interested in topology, in particular he became one of the foremost experts on combinatorial topology. His early interests in topology were in homology theory, a topic on which he published in 1932, and he proved duality theorems for manifolds. His aim was to bring together point-set topology and algebraic topology with his 1932 paper. In this paper, which introduces the topic which today is called the Cech homology theory, Cech also introduced the notion of the inverse limit. At the International Congress of Mathematicians in Zurich in 1932, Cech introduced the notion of higher homotopy groups of a space. Two years later Cech extended his work on homology to local homology. On hearing Cech talk about his results at a conference in Moscow

K prednim osobnostem univerzity patrili v 15. stoleti prirodovedci Kristan z Prachatic (1360-1439) a Jan Ondrejuv zvany Sindel (1375(?)-1456), tvurce prazskeho orloje, kteri pozvedli svuj zajem od tradicniho sestavovani kalendare k vlastnimu astronomickemu badani. Kepler stravil v Praze 12 let, bydlel zde u sveho pritele, tehdejsiho rektora Martina Bachacka z Naumeric (1541-1612) v univerzitni koleji. Profesorem prazske univerzity se vsak nestal. V Praze zformuloval sve prvni dva zakony.

In algebraic topology cohomology is a method of assigning algebraic invarients to a topological space which has a more refined algebraic structure than does homology . Cohomology arises from the algebraic dualization of the construction of homology.
    History
Although cohomology is fundamental to modern algebraic topology , its importance was not seen for some 40 years after the development of homology. The concept of dual cell structure, which Poincaré used is his proof of his famous duality theorem, contained the germ of the idea of comology, but this was not seen until later. There were various precursers to cohomology. In the mid 1920's, J.W. Alexander and Lefschetz founded the intersection theory of cycles on manifolds . On a n-dinensional manifold M, a p-cycle and a q-cycle with nonempty intersection will, if in general position, have intersection a (p+q-n)-cycle. This enables us to define a multiplication of homology classes H p M H q M H p+q-n M In De Rham related homology and exterior differential forms, proving
