Arthur Cayley 's father Henry Cayley, although from a family who had lived for many generations in Yorkshire, England, lived in St Petersburg, Russia. It was in St Petersburg that Arthur spent the first eight years of his childhood before his parents returned to England and settled near London. Arthur showed great skill in numerical calculations at school and, after he moved to King's College School in 1835, his aptitude for advanced mathematics became apparent. His mathematics teacher advised that Arthur be encouraged to pursue his studies in this area rather than follow his father's wishes to enter the family business as merchants. In 1838 Arthur began his studies at Trinity College, Cambridge from where he graduated in 1842. While still an undergraduate he had three papers published in the newly founded Cambridge Mathematical Journal edited by Duncan Gregory . Cayley graduated as Senior Wrangler and won the first Smith's prize. For four years he taught at Cambridge having won a Fellowship and, during this period, he published 28 papers in the

Arthur Cayley August 16 January 26 ) was a British mathematician . He helped found the modern British school of pure mathematics As a child, Cayley enjoyed solving complex math problems for amusement. At eighteen, he entered Trinity College , Cambridge, where he excelled in Greek, French, German, and Italian, as well as mathematics. Cayley worked as a lawyer for 14 years, but that is not what he is remembered for. While he was a lawyer he published about 250 research papers in mathematics, and later, while Sadleirian Professor at Cambridge , he published another 650. It was Cayley who first introduced matrix multiplication . He was consequently able to prove the Cayley-Hamilton theorem that every square matrix is a root of its own characteristic polynomial. He was the first to define the concept of a group in the modern way as a set with a binary operation satisfying certain laws. Formerly, when mathematicians spoke of "groups", they had meant permutation groups See also Cayley's theorem Table of contents showTocToggle("show","hide")

Arthur Cayley showed great skill in numerical calculations at school and his aptitude for advanced mathematics was apparent. His mathematics teacher advised that Arthur be encouraged to pursue his studies in this area rather than follow his father's wishes to enter the family business as merchants. In 1838, Arthur began his studies at Trinity College, Cambridge from where he graduated in 1842. While still an undergraduate he had three papers published in the newly founded Cambridge Mathematical Journal edited by Duncan Gregory. For four years he taught at Cambridge having won a Fellowship and, during this period, he published 28 papers in the Cambridge Mathematical Journal. A Cambridge fellowship had a limited tenure so Cayley had to find a profession. He chose law and was admitted to the bar in 1849. He spent 14 years as a lawyer but Cayley, although very skilled in the legal specialty of conveyancing, always considered it as a means to make money so that he could pursue mathematics. While still training to be a lawyer Cayley went to Dublin to hear Hamilton lecture on quaternions. He sat next to Salmon during these lectures and the two were to exchange mathematical ideas over many years. Another of Cayley's friends was Sylvester who was also in the legal profession. The two both worked at the courts of Lincoln's Inn in London and they discussed deep mathematical questions during their working day. During his years as a lawyer, Cayley published about 250 mathematical papers.

Arthur Cayley
Arthur Cayley August 16 January 26 ) was a British mathematician . He helped found the modern British school of pure mathematics. Arthur Cayley was born at Richmond in Surrey, England, on August 16, 1821. His father, Henry Cayley, brother of Sir George Cayley , was descended from an ancient Yorkshire family, but had settled in St. Petersburg, Russia, as a merchant. His mother was Maria Antonia Doughty, a daughter of William Doughty; who, according to some writers, was a Russian; but her father's name indicates an English origin. Arthur spent the first eight years of his life in St. Petersburg. In 1829 his parents took up their permanent abode at Blackheath, near London; and Arthur was sent to a private school. He early showed great liking for, and aptitude in, numerical calculations. At the age of 14 he was sent to King's College School, London; the master of which, having observed indications of mathematical genius, advised the father to educate his son, not for his own business, as he had at first intended, but to enter the University of Cambridge. At the unusually early age of 17 Cayley began residence at Trinity College, Cambridge. As an undergraduate he had generally the reputation of being a mere mathematician; his chief diversion was novel-reading. He was also fond of travelling and mountain climbing, and was a member of the Alpine Club. The cause of the Analytical Society had now triumphed, and the ''Cambridge Mathematical Journal'' had been instituted by Gregory and Leslie Ellis. To this journal, at the age of twenty, Cayley contributed three papers, on subjects which had been suggested by reading the

$69.95 hardcover 0-8018-8011-4 (1 ctn qty) December 2004 784 pp. 50 halftones, 7 line drawings Add hardcover to shopping cart Arthur Cayley (1821–1895) was one of the most prolific and important mathematicians of the Victorian era. His influence still pervades modern mathematics, in group theory (Cayley's theorem), matrix algebra (the Cayley-Hamilton theorem), and invariant theory, where he made his most significant contributions. Yet Cayley's life has been overlooked by historians, who have lavished far more attention on lesser figures. Mathematician and biographer Tony Crilly, the world's leading authority on Cayley, rectifies this oversight with the first definitive account of his life. Comprehensive and elegantly composed, this biography makes clear the scope of Arthur Cayley's prodigious achievements, firmly enshrining him as the "Mathematician Laureate of the Victorian Age." Tony Crilly is Reader in Mathematical Sciences at Middlesex University.
