Bonaventura Cavalieri
Italian mathematician, b. at Milan in 1598; d. at Bologna, 3 December, 1647. At the age of fifteen he entered the Congregation of Hieronymites, or Jesuates. He taught theology for a time, but, as he showed a decided preference and talent for mathematics, his superiors sent him to the university at Pisa. Here he studied under Castelli, and became one of the most illustrious of the disciples of Galileo BALL, Hist. of Math. (London, 1893); CAJORI, Hist. of Math. (New York, 1894); Biog. Bonaventura Cavalieri joined the religious order Jesuati in Milan in 1615 while he was still a boy. In 1616 he transferred to the Jesuati monastery in Pisa. His interest in mathematics was stimulated by Euclid 's works and after meeting Galileo , considered himself a disciple of the astronomer. The meeting with Galileo was set up by Cardinal Federico Borromeo who saw clearly the genius in Cavalieri while he was at the monastery in Milan. In Pisa, Cavalieri was taught mathematics by Benedetto Castelli, a lecturer in mathematics at the University of Pisa. He taught Cavalieri geometry and he showed such promise that Cavalieri sometimes took over Castelli's lectures at the university. Cavalieri applied for the chair of mathematics in Bologna in 1619 but was not successful since he was considered too young for a position of this seniority. He also failed to get the chair of mathematics at Pisa when Castelli left for Rome. In 1621 Cavalieri became a deacon and assistant to Cardinal Federico Borromeo at the monastery in Milan. He taught theology there until 1623 when he became prior of St Peter's at Lodi. After three years at Lodi he went to the Jesuati monastery in Parma, where he was to spend another three years.

Bonaventura Cavalieri
Bonaventura Francesco Cavalieri (geb. oder wahrscheinlich in Mailand , gest. 3.

Bonaventura Cavalieri
Bonaventura Cavalieri ) was an Italian mathematician whose legacy includes early work on logarithms and geometry , including the rule known today as Cavalieri's principle Cavalieri's principle states that the volumes of two objects are equal if the areas of corresponding cross-sections are in all cases equal. Two cross-sections correspond if they are intersections of the body with planes equidistant from a chosen base plane. It is used in the proof of the formula for the volume of a sphere

Bonaventura Cavalieri was born in 1958 in Milan and lived in Italy. He died at Bologna on November 27, 1647. Not much was said about his family, but he became a Jesuit at an early age.
Cavalieri studied trigonometry and calculus. He wrote a book called Directorium Generale Uranometricum that introduced logarithms as a computational tool. Cavalieri was appointed to the chair of mathematics at Bologna. He developed a method of indivisibles which became a factor in the development of the integral calculus. Cavalieri was taught mathematics by Benedetto Castelli who was a lecturer in mathematics at the University of Piza and taught Cavalieri geometry.
