Cauchy, Augustin Louis French mathematician who employed rigorous methods of analysis. His prolific output included work on complex functions, determinants, and probability, and on the convergence of infinite series. In calculus, he refined the concepts of the limit and the definite integral. Cauchy has the credit for 16 fundamental concepts and theorems in mathematics and mathematical physics, more than any other mathematician. His work provided a basis for the calculus. He provided the first comprehensive theory of complex numbers, which contributed to the development of mathematical physics and, in particular, aeronautics. In 1805 Cauchy provided a simple solution to the problem of Apollonius, namely to describe a circle touching three given circles, and in 1816 he published a paper on wave modulation. In mechanics he substituted the concept of the continuity of geometrical displacements for the principle of the continuity of matter and in astronomy he described the motion of the asteroid Pallas.

Augustin Cauchy, mathématicien Augustin Louis Cauchy En 1800, alors que la situation politique se stabilisait, la famille Cauchy retourna à Paris. Pendant cette période, les talents du jeune Augustin furent reconnus par deux grands mathématiciens : le Marquis de Laplace et Joseph Lagrange Polytechnique et de Avec maintenant tous ses efforts concentrés sur les mathématiques, Cauchy devint une vedette de la scène mathématique. Il devint professeur à Polytechnique Chrétien convaincu, il faisait profession publique de sa foi. Il prenait part à de nombreuses organisations de charité. Il a été l'auteur d'un appel au Pape durant la famine de 1846 en Irlande, a écrit des mémoires pour la défense des collèges Jésuites attaqués sous Louis Philippe. Membre actif de la Société de Saint Vincent de Paul et de l'Association pour la liberté du dimanche, il fit partie en 1856 des fondateurs de l'Oeuvre des Ecoles d'Orient (devenue l' Oeuvre d'Orient ) avec M. Falloux et M. de Montalembert. Dans le domaine mathématique, il a contribué à de nombreuses branches. On lui doit notamment des théorèmes sur la convergence des séries, les racines complexes, les intégrales, le calcul différentiel et des résidus. Il fut un pionier dans l'application des mathématiques à la physique, l'optique et l'astronomie Augustin Cauchy est mort le 23 mai 1857, d’une fièvre contractée pendant un voyage entrepris pour améliorer sa santé. Cauchy, Augustin-Louis Cauchy, Augustin-Louis (Parigi 1789 - Sceaux 1857), matematico francese. Studiò all'Ecole Polytechnique; esercitò per qualche tempo la professione di ingegnere, ma la fama dei suoi lavori sugli integrali (vedi analisi ) definiti gli procurò una nomina presso l'Ecole Polytechnique, la Sorbona e il Collegio di Francia. Dal 1830 al 1838 visse in esilio per aver negato il giuramento a Luigi Filippo. Nel 1848 venne nominato professore alla Sorbona e ottenne l'esenzione dal giuramento da Napoleone III. Cauchy fu uno dei maggiori matematici del XIX secolo: si distinse in particolare per aver conferito all' analisi caratteristiche che sono considerate tuttora fondamentali; verificò l'esistenza di funzioni ellittiche , mosse i primi passi in direzione di una teoria generale delle funzioni di variabile complessa e pose le basi per la convergenza delle serie . Perfezionò inoltre il metodo di integrazione delle equazioni differenziali lineari e si dedicò anche allo studio della propagazione della luce e alla teoria dell'elasticità.
