    Augustin Louis Cauchy
Augustin Louis Cauchy August 21 May 23 ) was a French mathematician . He started the project of formulating and proving the theorems of calculus in a rigorous manner and was thus an early pioneer of analysis . He also gave several important theorems in complex analysis and initiated the study of permutation group s. Having received his early education from his father Louis Francois Cauchy ( ), who held several minor public appointments and counted Lagrange and Laplace among his friends, Cauchy entered ‰cole Centrale du Pantheon in , and proceeded to the ‰cole Polytechnique in , and to the ‰cole des Ponts et Chauss©es in . Having adopted the profession of an engineer, he left Paris for Cherbourg in , but returned in on account of his health, where upon Lagrange and Laplace persuaded him to renounce engineering and to devote himself to mathematics. He obtained an appointment at the ‰cole Polytechnique, which, however, he relinquished in on the accession of Louis Philippe, finding it impossible to take the necessary oaths. A short sojourn at

    Augustin-Louis Cauchy - Cauchy's Life
    Somsack Chaitesipaseut
Augustin-Louis Cauchy was one of the greatest mathematicians during the nineteenth century. In fact, there are sixteen concepts and theorems named after him, more than any other mathematician. His life began in Paris, France on August 21, 1789, and ended at Sceaux, France on May 22, 1857. His father, Luois-Francois, and his mother, Marie-Madeleine Desestre, provided him and his siblings a comfortable life [Freudenthal, p. 131]. Cauchy was exposed to famous scientists as a child. The Cauchy family once had Laplace and Berthollet as neighbors, and his father even knew Lagrange. In fact, Lagrange had foreseen Augustin's scientific greatness when he was a child by warning his father to not show him any mathematical text before he was seventeen years old [Freudenthal, p. 131]. After the July Revolution of 1830, Cauchy lost most of his positions at the instistutes because he refused to take the oath of allegiance to the new king, Louis-Philippe, and decided to leave France. It was in 1833 that the ousted king of France, Charles X, called Cauchy to Prague to educate his son, who would later be the Duke of Chambord. It was not explained why, but Cauchy's wife joined him in Prague one year later [Freudenthal, p. 132]. Cauchy went back to Paris in 1838 when he finished his work with Charles X in Prague, and resumed his involvement with the Academy. At the time, because Cauchy was a mathematician, he was exempted from the oath of allegiance. After the establishment of the Second Republique in 1848, Cauchy resumed his position at the Sorbonne. Cauchy continued with his writings and publications through the remainder of his life [Freudenthal, p. 132].

    Cauchy's Criterion for Convergence
    Somsack Chaitesipaseut
Cauchy's Criterion for Convergence first appeared in Cauchy's Cours d'Analyse of 1821. Since I could not find a copy of this work, I could not make a copy of it. Thus, I had to resort to his devienne infiniment petite, quand on attribue au nombre n m '' [Cauchy, p. 267]. What this means (in English and in modern terms) is that a necessary and sufficient condition for convergence of a sequence is that it be a Cauchy sequence, where a Cauchy sequence is defined to be for each , there is a positive integer N such that for all and all [Protter, p. 76]. Even though this criterion for convergence bears Cauchy's name, he was not the first mathematician to derive this condition. Other mathematicians like Lacroix, Euler and da Cunha had already given similar forms for this criterion several years before Cauchy presented his. Yet, Cauchy's name stuck with this criterion. Some explain this by saying that it was because of his accompanying definitions for convergent and divergent sequences that his name was attached to this criterion over time [Katz, p.712; Grabiner, p103-104]. For the definitions of convergent and divergent, Cauchy writes, ``Let

This talking book comes with an interactive ''magic pen'' that works like a hand-held computer mouse pointer. Children can opt to turn the paper pages and listen to the story read with different voices for each character. Or they can interrupt the read-aloud session to play with the magic pen (permanently attached with a wire). They can point the pen tip to any word on a page and hear it pronounced, or touch a picture and hear a sound effect (such as ''Strike one!'' for the baseball bat). Very similar to the popular Living Books computer games, this 10-by-11-inch book is more portable than a home computer. Stories in this set include Lil's Loose Tooth, Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever, and Winnie the Pooh in A Sweet Good Morning. The set also includes a paper piano keyboard and map and human anatomy games. Gail Hudson

    10.6. Cauchy, Augustin (1789-1857)
IRA Augustin Cauchy was the mathematician that set the foundation of rigor in modern analysis. A product of the revolutions in France during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, he provided the revolutionary ideas that set this branch of mathematics on its present course. He is also known as being one of the most prolific writers in the history of the science. Augustin Louis Cauchy was born in Paris, France, on August 21, 1789, only a month after the storming of the Bastille. His father, a government official and staunch royalist, recognized the coming revolution and quickly moved his family to a country cottage in Arcueil. Having escaped the guillotine, the family was poor and the young boy was generally malnourished. For the rest of his life, this early poverty left the future mathematician in a state of ill-health. During his eleven year stay at the cottage, Augustin received a classical education and a strong disposition for the monarchy from his father, who wrote his own textbooks in verse, and strict Catholic religious training from his mother. This training would influence the rest of his life. His zealous political and religious beliefs would alienate this great mathematician from the majority of his countrymen. Augustin Cauchy died on May 23, 1857, after contracting a fever on a trip to the country to help restore his health. His last words were, "Men die but their works endure."

    Cauchy, Augustin (1789-1857)

French mathematician who wrote 789 papers, a quantity exceeded only by Euler and Cayley , which brought precision and rigor to mathematics. He invented the name for the determinant and systematized its study and gave nearly modern definitions of limit continuity and convergence Cauchy founded complex analysis by discovering the Cauchy-Riemann equations (although these had been previously discovered by d'Alembert Cauchy also presented a mathematical treatment of optics, hypothesized that ether had the mechanical properties of an elasticity medium, and published classical papers on wave propagation in liquids and elastic media. After generalizing Navier's equations for isotropic media, he formulated one for anisotropic media. Cauchy published his first elasticity theory in 1830 and his second in 1836. Both were rather ad hoc and were riddled with problems, and Cauchy proposed a third theory in 1839. Cauchy also studied the reflection from metals and dispersion relationships. Cauchy extended the polyhedral formula in a paper which was criticized by Malus . His theory of substitutions led to the theory of finite groups He proved that the order of any subgroup is a divisor of the order of the group. He also proved
