Home Collections Provenance Collection The Beaverbrook Art Gallery is dedicated to the preservation and exhibition of works of art, and is equally committed to the research and interpretation of those objects for which we are responsible: our collection. While the study of stylistic influence is important, it is the accompanying social history that provides a context in which to thoroughly understand an artwork. This context includes the era in which an artwork was produced, as well as its subsequent history, including exhibitions, published references, and ownership ("provenance"). Awareness of the extent of cultural destruction and pillage under the Nazi regime has given new urgency to settling histories of cultural property ownership. This Gallery has adopted guidelines established by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and the Canadian Museums Association (CMA) concerning the confiscation of objects during the Nazi era. These guidelines recommend that collections research specifically address the provenance of a work between the years 1933 and 1945. The acquisitions committee of The Beaverbrook Art Gallery now requires clarity of provenance before a work is considered for acquisition into the collection. Works already in the collection are being further researched in order to identify those with gaps, or with an unclear provenance.

The work collected pieces from Proust's childhood, observations of high class life-style, gossips, recollections of the closed world, where the author never found his place. The key scene is when a madeleine cake (a small, rich cookie-like pastry) enables the narrator to experience the past completely as a simultaneous part of his present existence: "And suddenly the memory revealed itself: The taste was that of the little piece of madeleine which on Sunday mornings at Combray (because on those mornings I did not go out before mass), when I went to say good morning to her in her bedroom, my aunt Léonie used to give me, dipping it first in her own cup of tea or tisane."

Zeroing In on Catalan's Conjecture
Ivars Peterson Fermat's last theorem is just one of many examples of innocent-looking problems that can long stymie even the most astute mathematicians. It took about 350 years to prove Fermat's scribbled conjecture, for instance. Now, Preda Mihailescu of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich has proved a theorem that is likely to lead to a solution of Catalan's conjecture, another venerable problem involving relationships among whole numbers. He presents his result in a paper to be published in the Journal of Number Theory "This is a very important contribution," says mathematician Andrew Granville of the University of Georgia in Athens. Mihailescu's work probably puts the resolution of Catalan's conjecture into the foreseeable future, he notes. Named for Belgian mathematician Eugène Charles Catalan, the conjecture concerns powers of whole numbers. For example, the sequence of all squares and cubes of whole numbers begins with the integers 4, 8, 9, 16, 25, 27, and 36. In this sequence, 8 (the cube of 2) and 9 (the square of 3) are not only powers but also consecutive whole numbers.

Conquering Catalan's Conjecture
Innocent-looking problems involving whole numbers can stymie even the most astute mathematicians. As in the case of Fermat's last theorem, centuries of effort may go into proving such tantalizing, deceptively simple conjectures in number theory. Now, Preda Mihailescu of the University of Paderborn in Germany finally may have the key to a venerable problem known as Catalan's conjecture, which concerns the powers of whole numbers. Consider the sequence of all squares and cubes of whole numbers greater than 1, a sequence that begins with the integers 4, 8, 9, 16, 25, 27, and 36. In this sequence, 8 (the cube of 2) and 9 (the square of 3) are not only powers of integers but also consecutive whole numbers. x p y q = 1, where x y p , and q are all greater than 1. The conjecture proposes that there is only one such solution: 3 and 2 A breakthrough in solving the problem occurred in 1976 when Robert Tijdeman of the University of Leiden in the Netherlands shows that, should the conjecture not hold, there can be only a finite rather than an infinite number of solutions to the equation. In effect, each of the exponents p and q must be less than a certain value, initially shown to be astronomically huge but later reduced to more manageable levels.

Catalan's problem
(another Prime Pages ' Glossary entries) Glossary: Prime Pages: In 1844, the Belgian mathematician Eugène Charles Catalan conjectured that 8 and 9 are the only pair of consecutive powers. That is, the Catalan equation for primes p and q and positive integers x and y x p y q has only the one solution: In 1976 R. Tijdeman took the first major step toward showing this by proving that for any solution y q is less than e^e^e^e^730 (a huge number!) [Guy94]. Since then this bound has been reduced many times, and we now know that the larger of p and q is at most 7.78 and the smaller is at least 10 On April 18, 2002, Preda Mihailescu published his completed proof [Mihailescu2003] which begins by showing that about solutions to this problem is that any solutions other than the pair ( p q ) = (2,3) must satisfy both of: p q mod q

Draft Proof of Catalan's Conjecture Circulated
By Eric W. Weisstein
May 5, 2002Today, in an email sent to the NMBRTHRY mailing list, number theorist Alf van der Poorten confirmed that an apparent proof of the long-outstanding Catalan's conjecture has been circulated to a group of mathematicians by number theorist Preda Mihailescu. The conjecture in question was made by Belgian mathematician in 1844, and it states that 8 and 9 (2 and 3 ) are the only consecutive powers excluding and 1. In other words, Catalan conjectured that is the only nontrivial solution to the so-called Catalan's Diophantine problem x p y q three consecutive powers existed (Ribenboim 1996), Catalan's conjecture itself has stubbornly refused attack for more than a century and a half. The first groundbreaking result was that of Robert Tijdeman (1976), who showed that there can be at most a finite number of exceptions should the conjecture not hold. This led to considerable computational efforts, and in 1999, Maurice Mignotte showed that if a nontrivial solution exists, then 10 p and 10 q (Peterson 2000).

  • the number of ways a polygon with n +2 sides can be cut into n triangles;
  • the number of ways in which parentheses can be placed in a sequence of numbers to be multiplied, two at a time;
  • the number of planar binary trees trees with n +1 leaves; and
