Ralph Nader visits Eugene.
by Aria Seligmann
Ralph Nader will be in town this week, stumping for book sales, raising funds for the Greens and winning the hearts and minds of the Eugene people. In the wake of Enron's collapse and the publication of his latest book, Crashing the Party , Nader has become akin to what one reporter calls "a rock star." He's packing houses and bookstores, getting the press coverage he lacked during his presidential campaign, and avoiding saying too blatantly "I told you so" regarding Enron's collapse. Crashing the Party , published in January, chronicles the entire 2000 presidential campaign, in minute detail. In some ways, it could be called "The Complete Nader" or the "Nader Reader." It exhaustively outlines the campaign trail, from media undercoverage and being barred from the primaries to the glut of fat-cat corporate cash spewed all over the Republican convention. It lists, in many appendices, organizations Nader formed or helped form, lists of loyal volunteers, the Green Party's 10 Key Values, his announcement speech and more, all in addition to a few hundred pages of Bush/Gore bashing. It's an historical work, to be sure. The pain and grist of a third party candidacy fighting the terrorism of a two-party system "a third party is a very uphill fight. The whole system is rigged," he says and the exposing of campaign financing and maneuvering. Nader chronicles how Bush/Gore didn't show up at major events if the voters weren't deemed to be important, and how, even if he was there, the media largely ignored him.

Update #10
Hey there everyone! Hope you're all well! First and foremost, let me assure you all that rumors of my not returning in the Spring have been greatly exaggerated (by one person in particular who will remain nameless but will be easily found out when I give the hint that he just departed from Barcelona back to Eugene at the end of last month, that silly boy...) Fear not, my faithful... I have indeed having a great time, but I'm starting to get a little homesick for good old Eugene, Cascadia and I will be flying back to the West Coast on April 30... and I have Sugar Beets shows on May 1 and May 2, I just found out. Just my style, like I never even left, huh? Anyway, let's recap... last time I wrote I had just finished my tour with Adam from Barcelona back to Paris and onto Toulouse, Donastia (San Sebastian), La Corunya, Coimbra, Lisbon, Grenada, and back to Barcelona. One thing I forgot to mention is how well all the time I've put into my French has served me even outside of France. When we arrived in Spain initially, my Spanish was still in its infancy, and it was awkward at first to communicate with the woman at the train reservation window, until she asked if I spoke French, and then it wasn't a problem. Similarly, French bridged the gap at a restaurant in Portugal and I was able to make sure that Adam's plate was dairy-free (he's allergic). Most of all, the French really saved me when I went out in Mataro with Ravi's girlfriend Noe and two of her friends. Neither Alba nor Anna spoke any English, but they spoke French better than me, and because of that I was able to actually have pretty good conversation with them. And especially when Noe would leave to the bar or the bathroom or whatnot, I was glad that I didn't have to just sit there and smile at her friends for lack of a translator!

Anyway, the show in the Basque was lively, and it was the best sing along yet, after a guy at the bar requested "Born To Be Wild." Also, it turns out that if there was one sure fire hit in any setting in Europe, it would have to be "Should I Stay Or Should I Go," in case you were curious... We also had a great time playing in Coimbra after we got sucked into this wild and crazy 22nd birthday party for a student and all of his fellow accounting students. And more than one of them absolutely insisted that they had heard "Bring It Down" on the radio there. I said, no, it sounds a lot like Nirvana, but they wouldn´t let go of it. "You´re already famous here! They play it all the time..." Hmmm, you never know. And speaking of Nirvana, all of a sudden everyone down here on the Iberian peninsula is now wondering if Kurt Cobain is still alive, because people are whispering to themselves and commenting to me everywhere I go that I look just like him. A girl on the street in Grenada had to rush up and give me a big giddy hug as she whined "Kurt!!!" so I can´t complain about it too much. Grenada was my favorite place on the whole Spain/Portugal loop. It is so beautiful (and relatively warm) and they give you a small plate of food (called "tapas") with every round of drinks! Gotta love that! But the coolest thing about Grenada were the people we met. First, we met this brother and sister from L.A. that were getting off the same train as Adam and me, and we camped in the park with them and embarked from there into some really wonderful new friendships amongst all of us.

Fermat's last theorem is just one of many examples of innocent-looking problems that can long stymie even the most astute mathematicians. It took about 350 years to prove Fermat's tantalizing conjecture. Now, Preda Mihailescu of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich has proved a theorem that is likely to lead to a solution of Catalan's conjecture, another venerable problem involving relationships among whole numbers. He describes his result in a paper to be published in the JOURNAL OF NUMBER THEORY. "This is a very important contribution," says mathematician Andrew Granville of the University of Georgia in Athens. Mihailescu's work probably puts the resolution of Catalan's problem into the foreseeable future, he notes. Named for Belgian mathematician Eugene Charles Catalan, the conjecture concerns powers of whole numbers. For example, the sequence of all squares and cubes of whole numbers greater than 1 begins with the integers 4, 8, 9, 16, 25, 27, and 36. In this sequence, 8 (the cube of 2) and 9 (the square of 3) are not only powers but also consecutive whole numbers.

Orin Kerr 10:19 AM More silly policework: Several readers point out this companion piece to my earlier post about undercover officers working at the McDonald's drive-in lane: Police, Dressed As Homeless, Give Tickets KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Homeless advocates are outraged by an operation where undercover police officers dressed as vagrants, observed drivers running red lights or committing other traffic violations, then radioed ahead to other officers who stopped those cars and wrote tickets. "Operation Vagrant," a sting operation involving the Florida Highway Patrol, Kissimmee police and the Osceola County Sheriff's Office, nabbed 171 drivers — most of whom ran red lights, a violation that carries an $83 fine. Undercover deputies stood along streets and gave the indication they were vagrants by pushing shopping carts and wearing fake teeth and tattered clothing. They also carried small cardboard signs, which read, "Sheriff's traffic sting in progress. Buckle up."

Eug¨ne Viollet-le-Duc
Eugene Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc January 27 ) was a French architect , famous for his restoration s of medieval buildings. Born in Paris France . Died in Lausanne Switzerland In the early , a movement for the restoration of medieval buildings appeared in France . Viollet-le-Duc, returning from a study trip to Italy , was ordered by Prosper Merim©e to restore Vezelay abbey. This work marked the beginning of a long series of restorations. Among his restorations:
  • Churches :
    • Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, Vezelay Notre-Dame de Paris Saint Denis Basilica , near Paris Saint-Louis, in Poissy, France Semur Saint-Nazaire, in Carcassonne , France Saint-Sernin, in Toulouse , France Town Halls :
      • Saint-Antonin Narbonne Castles : Viollet-le-Duc applied the lessons of Gothic architecture , especially what he conceived of its structural systems, to modern building materials such as cast iron. He practiced as archaeologically precise (for his time) a style of restoration as he could manage, but his own designs were remarkably innovative. His approach to both medieval and modern architecture was severely rational, in keeping with his own unsentimental appreciation of the Gothic achievement. Some of his restorations, such as that of the castle of Pierrefonds, were highly controversial because they did not aim so much at accurately recreating a historical situation as much as at creating a "perfect building" of medieval style.

    Archimedean Duals
When one forms the dual of a given polyhedron, one creates a new polyhedron in which the faces and vertices of the dual correspond to the vertices and faces, respectively, of the original polyhedron. When one takes the duals of the Archimedean solids , one gets an interesting set of new polyhedra that are called the Archimedean duals or the Catalan polyhedra , after the French mathematician Eugene Catalan, who first described them in 1865. In the Archimedean duals, every face is identical but there are two or more different types of vertices. This is because in the original Archimedean solids every vertex is identical but there are two or more different types of faces, and when taking the dual, faces transform into vertices and vice versa. In these Archimedean duals, the faces are not regular polygons; there are different lengths and angles within each face, but each face is identical and the vertex figures are regular. Furthermore, from the construction it follows that all the dihedral angles of an Archimedean dual are equal. The relationships between the Archimedean solids and their respective duals is nicely brought out by studying a compound of a solid and its dual. For example, the

The Archimedean duals are also known as the catalan polyhedra, after theFrench mathematician eugene catalan, who first described them in 1865.

Dual of a Polyhedron
For every polyhedron there is another polyhedron that is intimately connected to it, that is uniquely defined by it. This related polyhedron is called the Dual Polyhedron Let me jump ahead here and tell you a little bit about how a polyhedron and its dual are related. A polyhedron P and its dual P* have the same number of edges, but the roles of the vertices and faces are reversed. That is, P* has as many faces as P has vertices, and vice versa. Also, if P is a polyhedron and P* is its dual, it turns out that the dual of P* is P ; that is, (P*)* = P . This is reminiscent of the fact that every (nonzero) number has a unique inverse, and each is the inverse of the other. In fact, the dual of a polyhdron is sometimes called the reciprocal polyhedron! Let's go back now and see how the dual of a polyhedron P is derived. There are three steps:
  • Put a point in the center of every face of P ; these are the vertices of P* If two faces of P share an edge, connect the center points of those two faces; these are the edges of P* Now just color the faces of the new polyhedron and erase the original.

Which subsets of the roots of unity are Sidon in the plane?
Abstract: The motivating question is this: how does the multiplicative structure of the roots of unity relate to the additive structure of the complex plane? More specifically, what subsets of the roots of unity are Sidon sets (that is, have no repeated pairwise sums) in the discrete plane? The approach is essentially combinatorial, and no knowledge of harmonic analysis will be needed.
For any finite set of positive primes, P, let W be the be multiplicative subset of Z generated by P. Then
    Z
is a Sidon subset of the additive group of complex numbers. In fact, E is a finite union of M independent sets, where
Q is Sidon if and only if its intersections with cosets of certain (multiplicative) subgroups, namely those with square-free order, are Sidon uniformly.
We characterize the permutations of the roots of unity that preserve the quasi-independent sets (sets whose subsets all have distinct sums); they are the same permutations that preserve the independent sets. meteor Is inflation driven by two real scalar fields (the inflaton and the Higgs field). They interact between them, so first the inflaton is slowly rolling through its potential, and then triggers the rolling of the Higgs field, that undergoes a fast rolling. Inflation ends in a first order phase transition.
It was proposed by D.Linde in 1991, though the paper is not online
