Lewis Carroll Lewis Carroll is the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, who was born on January 27, 1832, in Daresbury, Cheshire, England. Carroll was the third child born to a family of eleven children; his father was a clergyman in the Church of England. From a very early age he entertained himself and his family by performing magic tricks and marionette shows, and by writing poetry for his homemade newspapers. In 1846 he entered Rugby School, and in 1854 he graduated from Christ Church College, Oxford. He was successful in his study of mathematics and writing, and remained at the college after graduation to teach. His mathematical writings include An Elementary Treatise on Determinants Euclid and His Modern Rivals (1879), and Curiosa Mathematica While teaching, Carroll was ordained as a deacon; however, he never preached. He also began to pursue photography, often choosing children as the subject of his portraits. One of his favorite models was a young girl named Alice Liddell, the daughter of the Dean at Christ Church, who later became the basis for Carroll's fictional character, Alice. He abandoned both photography and public speaking between 1880 and 1881, and focused on his writing. Carroll published his novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in 1865, followed by

Lewis Carroll
by David Carroll
First Appeared in Burnt Toast#7
Let's forget all about sex and violence for a while, and just talk about Lewis Carroll, the man and his creations. Don't worry, we'll get back to the sex and violence later. Like his most famous creation, the man didn't actually exist, but was the pseudonym of the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-1898), a shy man prone to stutter, seemingly only comfortable in the presence of young girls, whom he loved and spent much of his life devoted to. And while it is his children's literature he is remembered for, he was known at the time for more then just this field. Among his talents were mathematics, invention (including a Nyctograph, a device to record, Braille-like, any thoughts during the night without getting out of bed), word and chess puzzles and had remarkable skill with the camera when the craft was in its infancy, having his work shown at London's annual Photographic Exhibition. He was a devout member of the Church of England, ordained a Deacon though seldom preaching because of his stammer. And he had an affinity for Tuesdays. As Martin Gardner describes him he is 'a fussy, prim, fastidious, cranky, kind, gentle bachelor whose life was sexless, uneventful and happy'.

Jabberwocky
by Lewis Carroll (Charles L. Dodgson)
From Through the Looking-Glass
'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe. "Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!" He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought. And, as in uffish thought he stood, The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame, Came whiffling through the tulgey wood, And burbled as it came! One two! One two! And through and through The vorpal blade went snicker-snack! He left it dead, and with its head He went galumphing back. "And hast thou slain the Jabberwock? Come to my arms, my beamish boy! O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!" He chortled in his joy. 'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe: All mimsy were the borogoves

Logician; he was ordained as a deacon but took his religious career no further. Did you know? Carroll invented his pen name by translating his first two names, Charles Ludwidge, into the Latin 'Carolus Lodovicus' and then anglicising it into 'Lewis Carroll'. Critical verdict Alice's popularity used to be explained by the fact that, unlike so much Victoriana, the books were pure, amoral enjoyment - a position somewhat belied by the multiplicity of critical interpretations of Carroll (and confused by the accusations of paedophilia). While they are obviously not 'just' children's books, there's little agreement on what else they might be. Political (the Red Queen as Queen Victoria)? Freudian? Narcotic? Simply bizarre (one critical work, The Agony of Lewis Carroll, consisted entirely of searching Carroll's corpus for smutty anagrams)?

Timeline Lewis Carroll is born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, Carroll invented his pen name by translating his first two names into the Latin "Carolus Lodovicus" and then anglicizing it into "Lewis Carroll." He graduated from Christ Church College, Oxford. Carroll remained there, lecturing on mathematics and writing treatises and guides for students The first recorded use of his pseudonym was when Dodgson submitted a parody to the magazine The Train. The editor of The Train, Edmund Yates, chose the pseudonym "Lewis Carroll" from a list of possible pen names submitted by Dodgson. Although he took deacon`s orders in 1861, Carroll was never ordained a priest, partly because he was afflicted with a stammer that made preaching difficult and partly, perhaps, because he had discovered other interests. Lewis Carroll is best known for ALICE`S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND . It is believed that this book was originally written for Alice Liddell, the child of the Dean of Christ Church college.
