ALICES’ SHOP
Lewis Carrolls Old Sheep Shop
This 15th century Oxford building is situated in the city’s St Aldates Street opposite Christ Church Meadow, part of the famous Christ Church College. It is here it received its links with Lewis Carroll. Lewis Carroll was a mathematical don at the college and was friendly with the Dean, Rev'd Henry George Liddell, and his family. The Dean had three daughters, Lorina, Alice and Edith. Lewis Carroll took the family on numerous picnics along the picturesque banks of the river Thames. While her sisters played games or read books on these outings Alice would become bored and so Lewis Carroll would tell her fantastic stories all about the adventures of a little girl called Alice. Lewis would include people who featured in Alices’ everyday life, like her strict governess who became the queen of hearts in "Alice in Wonderland", the mad hatter was based on a hatter who lived in the High Street and was very eccentric because of the mercury he worked with . Also included was himself as a dodo (his real name was Charles Dodgson but Alice had trouble with this and affectionatly named him dodo). Sometime later the family persuaded Lewis to write down and publish these amazing adventures, they came in the form of two books "Alice in wonderland" and "Through the looking glass".

Lewis Carroll
Lewis Carroll was born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson on January 27, 1832, in Daresbury, Cheshire. Carroll was the third child born to a family of eleven children. From an early age he entertained himself and his family by performing magic tricks and by writing poetry for his homemade newspapers. Charles Lutwidge was a great writer, a famous photographer, mathematician, and illustrator. Carroll entered Rugby School, in 1846; twelve years later he graduated with honors in mathematics from Christ Church College, Oxford. He excelled in the study of mathematics and writing. After he graduated, he remained at the college to teach. His mathematical writings include An Elementary Treatise on Determinants, Euclid and His Modern Rivals, and Curiosa Mathematica. Additionally, Carroll began to pursue photography; he often selected children as the subject of his portraits. One of his favorite models was a young girl named Alice Liddell, who later became the basis for Carroll's fictional character, Alice. He abandoned photography in early 1880s and focused on his writing. In 1865, Carroll published Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Seven years later, he published Through the Looking Glass. Lewis Carroll died in Guildford, Surrey, on January 14, 1898.

50 Bab Ballads
by William. S. Gilbert The Aeneid
by Virgil This classic epic poem, translated from Latin, written around 29-19BC, contains twelve books exploring the legends surrounding Aeneas and the founding of Rome. The first six books follow Aeneas' journeys and are modeled after Homer's "Odysessy." The last six patterned after the "Iliad" deal with the Trojan war where Aeneas is told, as he leaves the burning ruins, that he will found a glorious city of destiny in the West. Amours de Voyage
by Arthur Clough Ancient Poems, Ballads and Songs of England
by Robert Bell (editor) Taken down from oral recitation and transcribed from private manuscripts, rare broadsides and scarce publications. An Anthology of Australian Verse
by Bertram Stevens Ballad of Reading Gaol
by Oscar Wilde This long ballad poem published in 1898 was Wilde's last artistic effort. The poem is a social commentary against the deplorable and inhuman conditions existing in Reading jail. His poignant plea for prison reform was written while he served a two-year term there. The Ballad of the White Horse

The Information Highway to HELL Nice to see you out on the Information Highway to Hell! Many hoped the Internet would blossom into an on-line Renaissance. Instead, we got porn, spam, and popup advertisements. Calling the Internet "The Information Highway to Hell" is my smug way of noting the as yet unrealized potential of cyberspace. Information Highway to Hell
I have tried to create a site with content, a site interesting enough to spend an hour in. Monologue is a recollection of my life. No better than anyone elses': no worse. Travelogue and Outdoors have pictures along with a written acounts of what I see. My intent with these areas is to give you the feeling of having gone there yourself - to let the viewer experience a place that he or she may never visit. All the pictures enlarge to full screen (in a new window) when you click on them. To close the enlarged pictures, click on the "x" found on the top right of the new window. You can read and *listen* to poems in Poetry. It is may be easier if you have a fast Internet connection, although I do stream the audio if you still use a slow modem.. Please let me know if you can't hear the poems. Live Cam is an experiment to see a live view of Times Square in New York City. If the camera in Times Square is not active, the pictures don't change. Genealogy has family research. High School Choir is recordings of the 1972, 1975 and 1976 Austin High School Choirs (pending).
