Lewis Carroll Photography Page
Lewis Carroll became interested in photography in the infancy of this scientific art form. He was a man of infinite patience and one who paid attention to the smallest detail. These qualities were mandatory to be a photographer in the 1850's. The wet collodion process was demanding indeed. It is thought that he gave up photography when the dry developing process came to the fore, because it made photography too easy. Anybody could do that. Where was the challenge? At any rate he is considered one of the best amateur photographers of his time. I think he was a bit of a photography snob. Carroll certainly would chose UNIX over Windows (who wouldn't?).

LEWIS CARROLL COLLECTION
Pseudonym of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson Lewis Carroll was the author of two immortal children's books. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass . As a person, he was as mysterious, paradoxical, and witty as his characters and nonsensical verses. To sample the wonderful and playful style of his writing, you can read this little piece I especially prepared for you. It is the letter he wrote to one of his many child friends and later entitled "The Three Cats." I also have started typing up some of his whimsical verses Carroll, or Mr. Dodgson as his child friends would refer him as, was born on January 27, 1832 and died on January 14, 1898. In the 66 years of his life, he has written more than 10 books, some of them were children's stories and some of them were texts of maths and logic, since he was, for 26 years, a mathematical lecturer at Oxford. Other than the two Alice books

I became interested in Lewis Carroll while I was writing a research paper on his use of language in the Alice Books. As I read more and more of Carroll's work, I became more and more addicted, these e-texts are the result. I have concentrated primarily on works which are not available elsewhere on the internet. The Nursery Alice, particularly was a labor of love, so if you enjoy looking through it, or any of the other texts, please take a few seconds to sign my guestbook Unfortunately my career as a student has pretty much taken over my life and I haven't had any time to update this page lately. I'm not sure when I'll be able to get anything new up, but I'm going to try to maintain everything that is here so that you can enjoy it. Also, while I love to recieve e-mails about this site and read them all, I cannot help with homework or papers over e-mail (I have enough of my own!) or provide any additional information. Add to a Notebook Lewis Carroll Renowned Victorian author Lewis Carroll was born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson on January 27, 1832, in Daresbury, Cheshire, England. The son of a clergyman, Carroll was the third child born to a family of eleven children. From a very early age he entertained himself and his family by performing magic tricks and marionette shows, and by writing poetry for his homemade newspapers. In 1846 he entered Rugby School, and in 1854 he graduated from Christ Church College, Oxford. He was successful in his study of mathematics and writing, and remained at the college after graduation to teach. His mathematical writings include An Elementary Treatise on Determinants Euclid and His Modern Rivals (1879), and Curiosa Mathematica (1888). While teaching, Carroll was ordained as a deacon; however, he never preached. He also began to pursue photography, often choosing children as the subject of his portraits. One of his favorite models was a young girl named Alice Liddell, the daughter of the Dean at Christ's Church, who later became the basis for Carroll's fictional character, Alice. He abandoned both photography and public speaking between 1880 and 1881, and focused on his writing. Many of Lewis Carroll's philosophies were based on games. His interest in logic came purely from the playful nature of its principle rather than its uses as a tool. He primarily wrote comic fantasies and humorous verse that was often very childlike. Carroll published his novel

Illustration by Sir John Tenniel in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland that inspirated the Mad Hatter Day Lewis Carroll is the pseudonym of the English writer and mathematician Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, b. Jan. 27, 1832, d. Jan. 14, 1898, known especially for ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND (1865) and THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS (1872), children's books that are also distinguished as satire and as examples of verbal wit. Carroll invented his pen name by translating his first two names into the Latin "Carolus Lodovicus" and then anglicizing it into "Lewis Carroll." The son of a clergyman and the firstborn of 11 children, Carroll began at an early age to entertain himself and his family with magic tricks, marionette shows, and poems written for homemade newspapers. From 1846 to 1850 he attended Rugby School; he graduated from Christ Church College, Oxford, in 1854. Carroll remained there, lecturing on mathematics and writing treatises and guides for students. Although he took deacon's orders in 1861, Carroll was never ordained a priest, partly because he was afflicted with a stammer that made preaching difficult and partly, perhaps, because he had discovered other interests. Among Carroll's avocations was photography, at which he became proficient. He excelled especially at

    RETURN LEWIS CARROLL
The Influence of Lewis Carroll's Life on His Work
by Brady     Many aspects of Lewis Carroll's life influenced his writing. Some of these aspects include his mathematical background and logical disposition, interest in and photography of little girls, abnormal eating habits, dual personality, sleeping difficulties, Victorian lifestyle, and neglected childhood. These characteristics of his life are reflected in his literature, including in his most well-known novel, “Alice's Adventures in Wonderland”.     Carroll was always an extremely logical man, constantly inventing more effective methods to complete a task. He invented the Nyctograph, for taking notes in bed at night and devised unique memory aids. He wrote a letter to Charles Babbage advising him on how to improve his calculating machine. Carroll also improved the hectograph, the Hammond Type-Writer, and Edison's electric pen. At one of his dinner parties, Carroll drew up a plan of the seating arrangements and who would be escorting whom, and listed the numerous advantages of his new seating method.     Carroll invented a rule for finding a day of the week for any date, rules for wining in betting, more fair elimination rules for tennis tournaments, improved systems of parliamentary representation, and a scale for measuring liquor. He thought up many card, croquet, and word games including games of logic, Synergies, and Doublets, which is similar to a modern form of Scrabble. Carroll excelled in origami, enjoyed chess, and invented a travel chessboard. He also ordered five different sizes of notepaper so he would have the right size for each letter.
