Definition, Bedeutung, Erkl¤rung im Lexikon
Nicolas Leonard Sadi Carnot 1. Juni in Paris 24.

Sadi Carnot and the Conservation of Energy
Vince Ciricola
Sadi Carnot was a proponent of the caloric theory, as were nearly all of the prominent figures prior to Joule. He never published anything that varied from that view although he may have indicated otherwise in some of his correspondence. It is interesting to note that Sadi Carnot and Emil Clapeyron were both engineers (Joule was not an engineer). Together they established the foundation on which the science of thermodynamics was built, primarily by physicists. Carnot is one of the few engineers in history who has name recognition. Emil Clapeyron rescued Carnot's paper from almost certain obscurity; he is responsible for the graphical depiction of this cycle familiar to all thermodynamic students and the equations associated with it . It is a testimony to Carnot that despite an incorrect notion on the nature of heat the Carnot Cycle/Engine is an indispensable part of virtually all college thermodynamic courses.

in full NICOLAS-LÉONARD-SADI CARNOT (b. June 1, 1796, Paris, Fr.d. Aug. 24, 1832, Paris), French scientist who described the Carnot cycle, relating to the theory of heat engines. Carnot was the eldest son of the French Revolutionary figure Lazare Carnot and was named for a medieval Persian poet and philosopher, Sa'di of Shir a z. His early years were a period of unrest, and the family suffered many changes of fortune. His father fled into exile soon after Sadi's birth; in 1799 he returned to be appointed Napoleon's minister of war but was soon forced to resign. A writer on mathematics and mechanics as well as military and political matters, the elder Carnot now had the leisure to direct his son's early education. Sadi entered the École Polytechnique in 1812, an institution providing an exceptionally fine education, with a faculty of famous scientists aware of the latest developments in physics and chemistry, which they based on a rigorous mathematics. By the time Sadi graduated in 1814, Napoleon's empire was being rolled back, and European armies were invading France. Soon Paris itself was besieged, and the students, Sadi among them, fought a skirmish on the outskirts of the city. During Napoleon's brief return to power in 1815, Lazare Carnot was minister of the interior, but, following the emperor's final abdication, he fled to Germany, never to return to France.

He made frequent visits to factories and workshops, studied the latest theories of political economy, and left in his notes detailed proposals on such current problems as tax reform. Beyond this, his activity and ability embraced mathematics and the fine arts.
Carnot visited his father in 1821 in his exiled home in Magdeburg. Hippolyte Carnot, his brother, was living with his father at this time. It is clear that there were many discussions about steam engines. The first steam engine had come to Magdeburg three years earlier and had interested Lazare Carnot and Sadi Carnot left Magdeburg filled with enthusiasm to develop a theory for steam engines. After returning to Paris, Carnot began the work which led to the mathematical theory of heat and helped start the modern theory of thermodynamics. E Mendoza explains in [2] the background:-
The problem occupying Carnot was how to design good steam engines. Steam power already had many uses - draining water from mines, excavating ports and rivers, forging iron, grinding grain, and spinning and weaving cloth - but it was inefficient. The import into France of advanced engines after the war with Britain showed Carnot how far French design had fallen behind. It irked him particularly that the British had progressed so far through the genius of a few engineers who lacked formal scientific education. British engineers had also accumulated and published reliable data about the efficiency of many types of engines under actual running conditions; and they vigorously argued the merits of low- and high-pressure engines and of single-cylinder and multi-cylinder engines.

Nicolas Léonard Sadi Carnot
Sadi Carnot Sadi Carnot Paris June 1 Paris August 24 ) was a French mathematician who wrote on the principles of the second law of thermodynamics in his treatise on heat engines (Carnot cycle) (He is not to be confused with Marie François Sadi Carnot , president of France from to his death.) Sadi Carnot, a son of the eminent geometer Lazare Nicholas Marguerite Carnot , was the most eminent of Fourier 's contemporaries who were interested in the theory of heat . Sadi Carnot was born at Paris , France, in 1796, and died there of cholera in 1832; he was an officer in the French army. In he issued a short work entitled Réflexions sur la puissance motrice du feu , in which he attempted to clarify how to get the most work out of an engine, such as a steam engine, from a given quantity of heat, such as from burning a lump of coal. Engineers of Carnot's time had tried various mechanical means, such as high pressure of steam or using some fluid other than steam, to maximize the amount of work from engines. But Carnot argued correctly that all that mattered, after removing inefficiencies such as friction and heat loss, was to maximize the ratio of the temperature of heat input to the temperature of heat exhaust, see
