69. Biography Of Thomas Carlyle
carlyle, thomas. (b. Dec. (AOJC). BIBLIOGRAPHY. Two books by James Anthony Froude, thomas carlyle A History of the First Forty Years of Life, 17951835, 2 vol.
http://www.eclipse.co.uk/isimmins/misc/carlyle.html
Carlyle, Thomas (b. Dec. 4, 1795, Ecclefechan, Dumfriesshire, Scot.d. Feb. 5, 1881, London, Eng.), British historian and essayist, whose major works include The French Revolution, 3 vol. (1837), On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and the Heroic in History (1841), and The History of Friedrich II of Prussia, Called Frederick the Great, 6 vol. (1858-65). Early life Carlyle was the second son of James Carlyle, the eldest child of his second marriage. James Carlyle was a mason by trade and, later, a small farmer, a man of profound Calvinist convictions whose character and way of life had a profound and lasting influence on his son. Carlyle was equally devoted to his mother as well as to his eight brothers and sisters, and his strong affection for his family never diminished. After attending the village school at Ecclefechan, Thomas was sent in 1805 to Annan Academy, where he apparently suffered from bullying, and later to the University of Edinburgh (1809), where he read widely but followed no precise line of study. His father had intended him to enter the ministry, but Thomas became increasingly doubtful of his vocation. He had an aptitude for mathematics, and in 1814 he obtained a mathematical teaching post at Annan. In 1816 he went to another school, at Kirkcaldy, where the Scottish preacher and mystic Edward Irving was teaching. He became one of the few men to whom Carlyle gave complete admiration and affection. "But for Irving," Carlyle commented sometime later, "I had never known what communion of man with man means." Their friendship continued even after Irving moved in 1822 to London, where he became famous as a preacher.

December 4 ~  Your Own Hero Sartor Resartus
"If you l o o k inside yourself, and you believe , you c a n be your o w n hero ~ Thomas Carlyle Before Mariah Carey 's hit song Hero , philosopher, mathematician , and historian Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) celebrated the power of the individual. He believed that to understand history, all one needed to do was study great men. "The age of miracles is forever here," he wrote, an apostle of courage and endurance who was called the "undoubted head of English letters" by philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson. Born on this day in Scotland, the eldest of nine, Carlyle was the first of the Victorian "wisdom writers ." His major works include The French Revolution , (1837) and On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and the Heroic in History He is also known as a mathematician who translated Legendre's éléments de géométrie in 33 editions. "It is a mathematical fact," he said, "that the casting of this pebble from my hand alters the center of gravity of the universe." A member of the famous London Sage of Chelsea literary circle, Carlyle had a life-long friendship with Ralph Waldo Emerson Historians say he had a reputation for being critical and idealistic. Carlyle was also a temperamental man with highly-sensitive hearing who retreated to his brother's farm for a year to translate

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Great Work
First Edition in English - Wilhelm Meister - 1824
An Especially Rare Survival in Original Printer's Boards Goethe, Johann Wolfgang von. [Carlyle, Thomas, Translator]
WILHELM MEISTER'S APPRENTICESHIP AND TRAVELS. A Novel From the German of Goethe. 3 volumes. First edition in English and Thomas Carlyle's First Book. 8vo, printer's original drab boards. xviii, 324; [4], 351; [4], 294. A fine and excellent set, uncut and in absolutely original state with possible restoration to the spines and end leaves sometime expertly and unobtrusively accomplished. Very little age wear and especially bright and clean internally. RARE FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL PRINTER'S BOARDS. This was Thomas Carlyle's first book. Goethe had a great influence on Carlyle. And after reading this novel for the first time, Carlyle said, "Here lay more insight into the elements of human nature, and a more erfect combining of them, than all the other fictitious literature of our generation."Any first edition of Goethe in original state would be considered difficult to obtain. This important printing, the true first edition in English in three decker format, is a fine example of the three-decker period and of the heighth of English literary publishing.
In WILHELM MEISTER Goethe again took up the novel form. It is full of not only realistic detail, but as well, poetic allegory. Wilhelm Meister was considered not so much "an illustration of the author's life-philosophy as a lay-figure on which he demonstrates his views. [It] is a work of extraordinary variety, ranging from the commonplace...to poetic romanticism.... Of all Goethe's works, this exerted the most immediate and lasting influence on German literature; it served as a model for the best fiction of the next thirty years" (Britannica).

Modern History Sourcebook:
Thomas Carlyle
On Sir Walter Scott
Part I And so in sum, with regard to Lockhart's Life of Scott, readers that believe in us shall read it with the feeling that a man of talent, decision and insight wrote it; wrote it in seven volumes, not in one, because the public would pay for it better in that state; but wrote it with courage, with frankness, sincerity; on the whole, in a very readable, recommendable manner, as things go. Whosoever needs it can purchase it, or purchase the loan of it, with assurance more than usual that he has ware for his money. And now enough of the written Life; we will glance a little at the man and his acted life. Or coming down to our own times, was not August Kotzebue popular? Kotzebue, not so many years since, saw himself, if rumour and hand-clapping could be credited, the greatest man going; saw visibly his Thoughts, dressed-out in plush and pasteboard, permeating and perambulating civilised Europe; the most iron visages weeping with him, in all theatres from Cadiz to Kamtchatka; his own 'astonishing genius' meanwhile producing two tragedies or so per month: he, on the whole, blazed high enough: he too has gone out into Night and Orcus, and already is not. We will omit this of popularity altogether; and account it as making simply nothing towards Scott's greatness or non-greatness, as an accident, not a quality. Shorn of this falsifying nimbus, and reduced to his own natural dimensions, there remains the reality, Walter Scott, and what we can find in him: to be accounted great, or not great, according to the dialects of men. Friends to precision of epithet will probably deny his title to the name 'great.' It seems to us there goes other stuff to the making of great men than can be detected here. One knows not what idea worthy of the name of great what purpose, instinct or tendency, that could be called great, Scott ever was inspired with His life was worldly; his ambitions were worldly. There is nothing spiritual in him; all is economical, material, of the earth earthy. A love of picturesque, of beautiful, vigorous and graceful things; a genuine love, yet not more genuine than has dwelt in hundreds of men named minor poets: this is the highest quality to be discerned in him.
