    Carlyle, Thomas
    Later Life and Works
    In 1834 the Carlyles moved to London to be near necessary works of reference for the projected French Revolution. Finally completed in 1837 (the first volume had been accidentally burned in 1835), the book was received with great acclaim. Although it vividly recreates scenes of the Revolution, it is not a factual account but a poetic rendering of an event in history. Carlyle extended his view of the divinity of man, particularly in his portraits of the great leaders of the Revolution. In subsequent works Carlyle attacked laissez-faire On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and The Heroic in History (1841), express his view that the great men of the past have intuitively shaped destiny and have been the spiritual leaders of the world. Chartism Past and Present (1843), contrasting the disorder of modern society with the feudal order of 12th-century England;

Thomas Carlyle

Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881)
Though his essays and histories do not command the attention today that they did in the Victorian era, the world of literature owes an enormous debt to Thomas Carlyle, from Ecclefechan in the Scottish Lowlands. In 1837, Carlyle gave us the great masterpiece of historical writing, The French Revolution. Early in his career as a teacher, Carlyle read extensively in English, German and French literature, becoming heavily influenced by Gibbon, Hume, Voltaire and Mme de Stael. His biography of Schiller appeared in The London Magazine (1823-4) and he also translated part of Goethe's Wilhelm Meister to satisfy a growing demand for works on German culture.
Many of Carlyle's articles were published in The Edinburgh Review (late 1820's), some of them dealing with contemporary social problems. During this time, he wrote essays on Goethe, published his revolutionary Sartor Resartus, followed by Voltaire, Diderot and The Diamond Necklace. It was only after he moved to London in 1834 and he published his history of the French Revolution, that Carlyle achieved worldwide fame.
As historian, social reformer and prophet, Carlyle has few equals. His whole philosophy was influenced by his idea of the Divine Will, proof of which is the duty of the poet and historian to express. His writings try to explain what has motivated human behaviour through the ages. One of Carlyle's most remembered lines: "No great man lives in vain. The history of the world is but the biography of great men."

CARLYLE, THOMAS An odd incident precipitated the result. A friend of Irvings, Mrs Basil Montague, wrote to Miss Welsh, to exhort her to suppress her love for Irving, who had married Miss Martin in 1823. Miss Welsh replied by announcing her intention to marry Carlyle; and then told him the whole story, of which he had previously been ignorant. He properly begged her not to yield to the impulse without due consideration. She answered by coming at once to his fathers house, where he was staying; and the marriage was finally settled. It took place on the 17th of October 1826. f John Aitken Carlyle (1801i 879) finally settled near the Carlyles in Chelsea. He began an English prose version of Dantes Divine Comedywhich has earned him the name of Dante Carlyle but only completed the translation of the Inferno (1849). The work included a critical edition of the text and a valuable introduction and notes. Jeffrey naturally declined to appoint a man who, in spite of some mathematical knowledge, had no special qualification, and administered a general lecture upon Carlyles arrogance and eccentricity which left a permanent sense of injury. Carlyle called himself in some sense a radical; and J. S. Mill, though not an intellectual disciple, was a very warm admirer of his friends genius. Carlyle had some expectation of the editorship of the London Review, started by Sir W. Molesworth at this time as an. organ of philosophical radicalism. The combination would clearly have been explosive. Meanwhile Mill, who had collected many books upon the French Revolution, was eager to help Carlyle in the history which he was now beginning. He set to work at once and finished the first volume in five months. The manuscript, while entrusted to Mill for annotation, was burnt by an accident. Mill induced Carlyle to accept in. compensation 100, which was urgently needed. Carlyle took up the task again and finished the whole on the 12th of January 1837. I can tell the world, he said to his wife, you have not had for a hundred years any book that comes more direct and flamingly from the heart of a living man. Do what you like with it, you

Carlyle, Thomas
"If you are ever in doubt as to whether to kiss a pretty girl, always give her the benefit of the doubt." "Man is, properly speaking, based upon hope, he has no other possession but hope; this world of his is emphatically the place of hope." "Humour has justly been regarded as the finest perfection of poetic genius." "That there should one man die ignorant who had capacity for knowledge, this I call a tragedy." "Laughter is one of the very privileges of reason, being confined to the human species." "Life is a succession of lessons which must be lived to be understood." "The greatest of all faults is to be conscious of none." "Everywhere the human soul stands between a hemisphere of light and another of darkness; on the confines of the two everlasting empires, necessity and free will." "Fun I love, but too much fun is of all things the most loathsome. Mirth is better than fun, and happiness is better than mirth." "Under all speech that is good for anything there lies a silence that is better, Silence is deep as Eternity; speech is shallow as Time."
