Biography
I was born in Newark, New Jersey. I studied mathematics and philosophy as an undergraduate at Princeton, graduating in 1965, and completed my doctorate in mathematics at Duke in 1969, with a dissertation on p-adic function theory directed by Leonard Carlitz. I joined the mathematics faculty at the University of Tennessee in 1969. Visiting appointments have included a year as a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford in 1988-89, and semesters as a Visiting Fellow in Philosophy at Princeton in 1990 and the University of Arizona in 1991. Research Interests Applications of Probability Theory to Decision Theory and the Philosophy of Science . My interests here center on the problem of revising a probability measure in the light of new evidence when classical conditionalization is unwarranted. I have been particularly interested in a generalization of conditionalization called "probability kinematics," due to the philosopher Richard Jeffrey, and have extended Jeffrey's approach to the case in which new evidence simply places a lower bound on possible revisions of a prior probability. I have also worked on the "old evidence problem," which asks for a probability revision method that increases the probability of an hypothesis h when it is discovered that h implies previously known evidence e (as in the case of Einstein's explanation of the heretofore anomalous advance in the perihelion of Mercury in terms of the general theory of relativity). My research in this area has been supported by NSF's Science and Technology Studies Program.

Minutes of the Board of the Fibonacci Association 1:00 p.m., June 3, 2000 Greensboro, NC Present: P. Anderson, G. Bergum, C. Cooper, K. Dilcher, F. Howard, H. Grundman, M. Johnson, C. Kimberling, P. Solsaa, and W. Webb. Absent: A. Granville, J. Lagarias 1. Minutes of last meeting The minutes of the June 19, 1999, meeting of the Board, as amended by e-mail were read again to discuss old business and were approved. 2. Report on membership and subscriptions The subscription manager's report was approved, and a copy is attached for the minutes file. Several items were discussed for clarification of policy. Amazon.com is selling our books; we should give them some profit and add a promotional sheet to the books. P. Solsaa will research our costs and the Board will vote by e-mail. Correspondence should be saved one more year than required by tax reporting P. Anderson will find out how long we should save our tax records. Renewal notices should be sent in mid-August. We should keep a list of known e-mail addresses for members in case we need a second way of communicating, such as final renewal notice. 3. Treasurer's report. The treasurer's report for 1999 dated May 18, 2000, was read and approved. A copy is attached for the minutes file. P. Anderson will report to the Board if he finds a better investment opportunity; our $40,000 CD matures in June. 4. Editor's Report Current status of papers for the Fibonacci Quarterly: 66 accepted papers in queue, requiring 484 printed pages, with 77 papers in the hands of referees. There are 5.6 issues in accepted papers. It was moved by G. Bergum, seconded by H. Grundman, to publish an extra issue June-July 2001; motion carried. We discussed format of submissions; this should be discussed every year. Where are we moving regarding electronic submission and access? K. Dilcher will share CMS report with us. Charlie Cook's Index of the Fibonacci Quarterly will be placed on the internet. 5. Conference Organizer's Report The Luxembourg Conference is scheduled from July 17 to July 22, 2000. So far, 49 abstracts have been received and accepted; the deadline has been extended to June 14. We discussed the treatment of the Proceedings by Math Reviews. We will discuss whether or not to publish a conference proceedings at our next meeting. K. Dilcher will find out how Zentralblatt handles conference proceedings. A conference proceedings for 2002 will be an agenda item for the June, 2001, Board Meeting. C. Kimberling moved and H. Grundman seconded a motion to adopt the statement, "The Fibonacci Association does not provide financial assistance for conference participants"; motion carried. 6. Revision of Bylaws After discussion, it was moved by H. Grundman and seconded by C. Kimberling to adopt the revised bylaws; the motion carried unanimously. A copy of the accepted draft is attached to these minutes. 7. Travel expenses for board members G. Bergum moved and H. Grundman seconded, that all board members who attend board meetings will be reimbursed for out of pocket expenses for travel, room, and board; motion carried. G. Bergum moved, and W. Webb seconded, a motion that all persons invited to report to the board at a meeting will be reimbursed for out of pocket expenses for travel, room and board; motion carried. H. Grundman moved and G. Bergum seconded the following: The Board of Directors will decide whether or not to hold a given board meeting in conjunction with an international meeting; motion carried. 8. International Meeting 2002 The Board voted to accept C. Long's offer to host the 2002 Conference at Northern Arizona University. 9. Proposal for new column for Quarterly In 1993 A. Granville and J. Lagarias proposed a column on applications of elementary sequences which was approved by the Board at that time but was never implemented. While this would generate interest, with our backlog of accepted articles we do not want to undertake a column to appear in each issue. F. Howard will discuss publishing a sample paper on applications with A.G. and J. L. 10. Board Member Emeritus Calvin Long was named Board Member Emeritus by unanimous vote. 11. Tributes to Herta Freitag and L. Carlitz A one page tribute will appear for Leonard Carlitz in November. F. Howard will ask Margie Ribble to write a one page memorial tribute for Herta Freitag to appear later. 12. Board Membership After Board action, the expiration years for members of the Board are: M. Johnson, H. Grundman, C. Kimberling: 2003; K. Dilcher, F. Howard, W. Webb: 2002; P. Anderson, G. Bergum, A. Granville, J. Lagarias: 2001. C. Cooper, with his status as editor, continues as an ex-officio member. Terms for officers: F. Howard, President through 2002; W. Webb, Vice-President through 2002; P. Anderson, Treasurer through 2001; M. Johnson, Secretary through 2003. 13. Donation of Domain Names After discussion, H. Grundman moved and C. Kimberling seconded a motion to decline the donation of domain names received by P. Anderson. Motion carried. 14. Fibonacci Quarterly Website C. Kimberling, G. Bergum, and K. Dilcher will communicate on links and ways to improve our website. If we can get the domain name fibonacci.org then the Fibonacci Quarterly website can be a link. H. Grundman moved, C. Kimberling seconded, a motion to authorize the treasurer to pay for fibonacci.org if that domain name is available; motion carried. 15. The next meeting of the Board will be in June, 2001, time and place to be set through memos from F. Howard. Meeting adjourned at 5:30 p.m. Marjorie Bicknell-Johnson, Secretary

A Hungarian mathematician with no home and no job, Paul Erdös was the incredibly prolific mathematician of the highest caliber. He, who died at age 83 in September 1996, wrote hundreds of mathematical research papers in many different areas, many in collaboration with others. Erdös's motto was not ‘Other cities, other maidens’ but ‘Another roof, another proof.’ He did mathematics in more than 25 different countries, completing important proofs in remote places and sometimes publishing them in equally obscure journals. Concentrating fully on mathematics, Erdös traveled from meeting to meeting, carrying a half-empty suitcase and staying with mathematicians wherever he went. His colleagues took care of him, lending him money, feeding him, buying him clothes and even doing his taxes. In return, he showered them with ideas and challenges - with problems to be solved and brilliant ways of attacking them.
