Crittografia Girolamo Cardano Con l'intento di avere una chiave che varia ad ogni messaggio, Girolamo Cardano, fisico matematico milanese noto per aver pubblicato il primo libro sulla teoria della probabilità, ebbe l'idea di usare come chiave di cifratura il testo stesso che doveva essere cifrato, ripartendo dall' inizio ad ogni nuova parola. La cifratura avveniva per somma della chiave con il testo in chiaro (parliamo sempre di somme con modulo 26, ovvero, qual'ora si superi il valore 26, si inizia a contare di nuovo da inizio alfabeto).     His father was a jurist of considerable learning, a friend of Leonardo da Vinci. He is said to have been of noble descent, but I gathered that the line was so attentuated as hardly to exist. Cardano was born out of wedlock, and the father, who did eventually marry the mother, did not live with the family until Cardano was seven.
    While not poor, the family hardly seems to have been wealthymore affluent than poor, however.

    Cardano began his university studies in 1518 at Pavia and completed his B.A. at Padua. He returned to Pavia for the M.D. in 1526.

    In his autobiography, De vita propria liber (The Book of My Life) Cardano describes that he was born, after failed attempts to induce an abortion. After an abusive childhood Cardano managed to get an education at the University of Pavia and at the University of Padua where he earned a Doctorate. Cardano became a skilled physician, an astrologer to the pope, and an accomplished mathematician. Cardano wrote books at an incredible rate (131 altogether plus manuscripts for another 111) on a wide variety of subjects: "mathematics, astronomy, astrology, physics, horoscopy, chess, gambling, consolation, marvelous cures, poisons, air, water, dreams, urine, teeth, the plague, wisdom, morals, and music. Cardano's book on consolation was the source of Hamlet's famous remarks on sleep and death. Cardano's greatest work was his Ars Magna . This work about algebra included techniques (although not original) for solving cubic and quartic equations. Cardano's short booklet on probability, Liber de Ludo , a practical guide to gambling, including cards and dice and cheating, was not printed until 1663. In the mathematical sections Cardano discusses probability, and a part of the formula for the binomial distribution, and a form of the 'law of large numbers.'     Yet when Cardano wrote, Inquisitors and Spaniards were already busy in Italy, either hindering the production of such natures, or, where they existed, by some means or other putting them out of the way. There lies a gulf between this book and the memoirs of Alfieri. In the 'Exhortation' which Cornaro added at a much later time, in his ninety-fifth year, he reckons it among the elements of his happiness that his 'Treatise' had made many converts.     One of the most challenging problems in Mathematics is solving Polynomial Equations. The General Polynomial Equation is of the form: a n x n + a n-1 x n-1 + ... + a x + a where the a 's are Real Numbers and n is a positive integer. If a n is non-zero, we say the Degree of the Polynomial is n The simplest of these equations is the Linear Polynomial Equation ax + b = . The solution of it is known since ancient time to be x = -b/a . The Quadratic Equation, ax + bx + c = , has Degree 2 and it's solution is known to the Babylonians around 2000 BC. In campo astrologico la sua opera maggiore è il commento ai quattro libri del Tetrabiblos di Tolomeo. Arrestato ne 1570 e processato dall’Inquisizione con l’accusa di eresia e pratiche occulte, scrisse nel 1575 la sua autobiografia, con il titolo De vita propria liber (Della mia vita).

He lectured on medicine at Milan, Pavia, and Bologna and in went to Rome, where he received a pension from the pope and practised his profession. He was unjustly charged with atheism , because of his interest in astrology and superstition. Among other works he published a treatise on algebra which contains the solution of the cubic equation since named after him.

    died: September 20, 1576 in San Marco, Italy Cardano was an ambitious, dishonest, hot-tempered, quarrelsome, conceited and humorless man, but capable of generosity, kindliness and merciless self-revelation. His parents were an abominable pair; his favorite son was executed for murder; his other son was a scoundrel who managed to escape the gallows but brought Cardano nothing but unhappiness and disgrace.
    (J. R. Newman) Prominent physician. Prolific writer on all topics. First published solutions for roots of 3rd and 4th degree polynomials. First booklet on probability. Cardano's father was a physician, lawyer and geometer, and the whole family beat Cardano as a child, only stopping later because it might hinder his job of carrying his father's baggage. At 19 Cardano entered the University of Pavia to study medicine. Because of his background and personality, good positions were not available to him and he became a country doctor in a small village. Cardano considered his life idyllic: "I gambled, played musical instruments, took walks, was of good cheer and studied only rarely. I had no pains, no fears. It was the springtime of my life." Of all of his writings, Cardano is primarily remembered for Ars Magna, the first great Latin book entirely about algebra. It discussed the theory of equations and included for the first time in print techniques for solving cubic and quartic equations. The techniques, however, were not discovered by Cardano. His student, Ferrari, discovered the method for solving quartics, and Tartaglia discovered the method for cubics. Tartaglia was understandably upset to see his secret method for solving cubics included in Cardano's Ars Magna, and he accused Cardano, who had promised to keep the method a secret, of theft and a number of other low crimes. Ferrari, sharp-tongued and hot-headed, was put in charge of defending his teacher Cardano in public, and a public feud raged.
