It first appeared in 1554 on the title page of the Basel edition of De Subtilitate (Ludovicus Lucius anno 1554). Later portraits all derive from this woodcut. Girolamo or Hieronimo Cardano 's name was Hieronymus Cardanus in Latin and he is sometimes known by the English version of his name Jerome Cardan. Girolamo Cardano was the illegitimate child of Fazio Cardano and Chiara Micheria. His father was a lawyer in Milan but his expertise in mathematics was such that he was consulted by Leonardo da Vinci on questions of geometry. In addition to his law practice, Fazio lectured on geometry, both at the University of Pavia and, for a longer spell, at the Piatti foundation in Milan. When he was in his fifties, Fazio met Chiara Micheria, who was a young widow in her thirties, struggling to raise three children. Chiara became pregnant but, before she was due to give birth, the plague hit Milan and she was persuaded to leave the city for the relative safety of nearby Pavia to stay with wealthy friends of Fazio. Thus Cardan was born in Pavia but his mother's joy was short lived when she received news that her first three children had died of the plague in Milan. Chiara lived apart from Fazio for many years but, later in life, they did marry. Cardan at first became his father's assistant but he was a sickly child and Fazio had to get help from two nephews when the work became too much for Cardan. However, Cardan began to wish for greater things than an assistant to his father. Fazio had taught his son mathematics and Cardan began to think of an academic career. After an argument, Fazio allowed Cardan to go university and he entered Pavia University, where his father had studied, to read medicine despite his father's wish that he should study law.

Cardano, Girolamo (150 1576) Cardano was encouraged to study both the classics and mathematics by his father, who was a friend of Leonardo da Vinci. Cardano began his university studies in 1520 at Pavia and completed them at Padua in 1526 with a degree in medicine. In 1534, Cardano became a doctor and teacher of mathematics in Milan. Within a few years Cardano became the city's most famous physician. In 1539, while awaiting the publication of Practica arithmetica , his first book on mathematics, Cardano learned that Tartaglia knew the procedure for solving cubic equations. Cardano succeeded in obtaining this information from Tartaglia by promising not to reveal it. He kept the promise for six years, but then published in 1545 the method in his Artis magnae sive de regulis algebraicis liber unus , commonly called Cardano's Ars magna Cardano wrote more than 200 works on medicine, mathematics, physics, philosophy, religion, and music, although his fame today rests solely on his contributions to mathematics. In the Practica arithmetic a , which is devoted to numerical calculation, Cardano revealed his tremendous mathematical ability in solving many complex algebraic problems.

Cardano, Girolamo
Girolamo Cardano was born on September 24, 1501 in the city of Pavia, in what is now Italy. Without a doubt, he is one of the most colorful characters in the early history of probability. Cardano's early training in mathematics probably came from his father, who was a lawyer by trade, but evidently an accomplished mathematician as well. Later, Cadano was educated at the universities of Pavia and Padua. He received a doctoral degree in medicine in 1525. Cardano was a man of many interests and professions, including: law, medicine, astrology, and mathematics. Cardano published The Practice of Arithmetic and Simple Mensuration in 1537. The mathematical work that he is best known for, Ars Magna (The Great Art) was published in 1545. This book contains a variety of methods for solving polynomial equations, and anticipates the discovery of complex numbers. Additionally, Cardano wrote two encyclopedias of natural science. He achieved extraordinary fame as a physician, and indeed was considered one of the foremost scientists in Europe. However, Cardano was also an avid and at times compulsive gambler, who squandered a significant part of his life and fortune on games of chance. On the positive side, his interest in gambling led to his mathematical study of probability. Cardano's book

    History Today
    Jan, 1999 by Allan Ashworth
Girolamo Cardano was one of the great Renaissance polymaths in the tradition of Leonardo. Allan Ashworth explains the significance of his key mathematical work. `A man is nothing but his mind; if that be out of order, all is amiss, and if it be well, the rest is at ease'. Girolamo Cardano In a rear-wheel-drive car, the gear box is connected to the rear axle by a type of universal joint known as a cardan-shaft. It has the effect of absorbing the vertical movement of the vehicle. Not only does this joint mean a smoother drive, but it is more efficient and less prone to breakdown because the drive shaft is always at a ninety-degree angle to the axle. The first such universal joint was fitted to a carriage belonging to the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V in 1548. This piece of engineering alone would have shown its inventor (after whom it was named) to be a remarkable man; but there was a lot more to him than this. The man was Girolamo Cardano (1501-76), a man in the quintessential Renaissance tradition. Today, it is impossible to follow all the main strands of scientific thinking, much less to make a substantial contribution in more than one field, but this was not always so. Between the two great polymaths Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) and Isaac Newton (1642-1727) was the less well-known Cardano, a man whose creative scope was possibly on a wider scale than even these two giants. Several of Cardano's ideas had an impact on his age and continue to be important today. He published no fewer than 131 books on every conceivable subject, from a biography of the Virgin Mary, through algebra, to a treatise on curing syphilis. He was also one of the first philosophers to write an autobiography, and was roundly condemned for his vanity in doing so. Though outspoken in the manner of Benvenuto Cellini's autobiography, this reveals relatively little about his domestic situation or tumultuous private life, but concentrates on expounding his observations and ideas.
