This web site presents some of the results of that research but is not intended to be an exhaustive exposition of the history of these branches of the Campbell Clan. These Southwest Virginia Campbells descend from two family groups who settled in Beverley Manor (Orange/Augusta County) Virginia in the 1730's and 1740's. April 4, 1955, London, Ontario Although he's only fifth in career wins, Campbell is by far the top money-winning driver in harness racing history with over $155 million, more than $50 million ahead of Mike Lachance, who's in second place. Campbell began racing in 1972, primarily at Windsor Raceway in Ontario. When the track's racing secretary, Joe DeFrank, moved to the Meadowlands in New Jersey in 1975, Campbell made the same move, and won more that year than he had the previous three years combined. His first big year was 1979, when he led in money won with $3,308,984. Campbell was the top money winner 12 of the next 17 years, setting a record with $11,148,565 in 1988. Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies SAMPLE ARTICLE JIS XV 2003: 43-60 THE EDUCATIONAL DEBATE OVER DARWINISM John Angus Campbell University of Memphis The debate over teaching Darwin's theory in public schools has been a feature of American public life since at least the Scopes trial of 1925. Drawing on the liberal arts tradition centered in rhetoric and civic argument, this essay argues that science education should not merely prepare tomorrow's scientists, but also educate scientifically articulate citizens. It offers the Origin of Species as a model for educational strategies that would protect the integrity of science, while addressing the objections of students and their parents to Darwin's ideas. Darwin's work belongs in the great tradition of two-sided humanistic argument central to Western education since antiquity, and exemplified in John Milton and John Stuart Mill. Debate between Darwin's theory and its alternatives, whether young earth creationism or Intelligent Design, is recommended as a means to teach Darwin's theory and train students in the central role of critique and argument in scientific reasoning. Herringshaw (ed.), Local and National Poets of America 265 (Chicago: American Publishers' Association, 1890)] "John P. Campbell, son of John and Nancy J. (Malin) Campbell, was born in Boston, Mass., on the 8th day of April, 1842. His parents were of Scotch descent. On his father's side he is descended from the Campbells of Clyde, having an ancestry of rank in the Scottish Highlands. On his mother's side also his ancestors attained high distinction. [Campbell] was brought up in the family of Jeremiah Russell Smith, father of William Russell Smith, a noted musician in South Medfield, Mass. He attended the South Medfield and Walpole schools, previously going to schools in Boston. In the War of the Rebellion he enlisted as a private in Battery H, First Rhode Island Light Artillery, Sept. 19, 1862, and was mustered in Oct. 14, 1862. He was subsequently promoted to corporal. That he served with credit and honor in his battery is attested by his being wounded severely in hand, shoulder, and foot, in action near Petersburg, Va., April 2, 1865. He was corporal of the right piece, of the right section of his battery in that engagement. He was mustered out of service June 28, 1865.
