The idea of losing you has not yet taken hold of me, and yet I must come to it. Indeed, you hardly know how we all feel over your going away. Still if it proves good for you and your family we should feel resigned knowing that it is for the best - We reaised about $900.00 on our Texas National Bank debt. This does not include our claim against the bank. This is doing very well - Everything in San Antonio is about the same as when you left. I see a good many new faces on the streets. Went to Church yesterday for the first time in six weeks and enjoyed one of Mr. Morey's helpful sermons. Banning cards. My family are all well. Mrs Myers sends her warmest regards to Mrs. Gauss -

astragalpress.com The slide rule, with its many variations has been vital to mathematics and engineering since its invention in the 17th century. Interest in this field has grown dramatically, unfortunately, there has been little information available except for manufacturers’ manuals and catalogs, making this reprint of Cajori’s classic particularly valuable. Also included with this reprint of the 1910 edition is Cajori’s extensive article “On the History of Gunter’s Scale and the Slide Rule during the 17th Century,” which sets forth his subsequent findings. There is also a helpful explanatory introduction by Dr. Robert K. Otnes, editor of the Journal of the Oughtred Society. 178 pages. Illustrated. 6-1/8 x 9-1/4. Soft cover. $24.95. (1994)

Very good mathematics dictionary, also available on CD-ROM. The price is very reasonable, and the dictionary is fairly comprehensive. Most definitions are rather dry and technical, albeit precise. Some figures and cross-references are provided, but no literature references and few formulas. The typesetting of the formulas is not very attractive. The HarperCollins Dictionary is a useful quick reference to mathematics students and educators, but is likely less useful to students or researchers in the physical sciences who need examples, diagrams, and references. There is little material on recreational mathematics or on very recent results. The encyclopedia by Weisstein is more eclectic, slightly less technical, and contains more details and much more recreational material. $18. Bouvier, Alain. and George, Michel.

Numerals and Numerical Notation
An Extended Bibliography
This is a bibliography of over 800 academic publications about numerals, numeral systems, numerical notation and numeration. It is a working bibliography for my doctoral dissertation, The Comparative History of Numerical Notation , which should be completed later this year. The references primarily focus on numeral symbols (like Roman numerals) rather than number words, but there is plenty of information on numeration in general. Most of the sources are in English, but a few are in other languages. If you know of any source that I have not listed, or are one of the few people excluding myself and my thesis supervisor interested in this topic, please contact me Of course, you may not be looking for several hundred obscure papers, but simply wish to find some general sources. If so, please check out my Numeration Books page, where I review about 20 interesting and important books on numerals and numeration. If you would like to purchase any of them, they are available for sale through Amazon.com

Subject: infinity Name: Mark E. Kelly
Who is asking: Parent
Level: All Question:
There is a symbol that looks like a sideways 8 that is used to represent infinity. Does it have a name? Hi Mark,
Earliest Uses of Various Mathematical Symbols
, a Web site maintained by a High School teacher Jeff Miller, is a wonderful source for answering this type of question. (Infinity is in the calculus section.) Jeff refers to "Cajori, Florian. A History of Mathematical Notations. 2 volumes. Lasalle, Illinois: The Open Court Publishing Co., 1928-1929" the definitive source on mathematical notation.
Cajori says that the infinity symbol was introduced by John Wallis (1616-1703) in 1655 in his De sectionibus conicis (On Conic Sections). Wallis also used the infinity symbol in various passages of his Arithmetica infinitorum (Arithmetic of Infinites) (1655). In "Zero to Lazy Eight", Alexander Humez, Nicholas Humez, and Joseph Maguire write: "Wallis was a classical scholar and it is possible that he derived the symbol for infinity from the old Roman sign for 1,000, CD, also written Mthough it is also possible that he got the idea from the lowercase omega, omega being the last letter of the Greek alphabet and thus a metaphor of long standing for the upper limit, the end." Cheers

Research in HSU Library Before beginning your research project, it is recommended that you think about how comprehensive your research must be, how current your sources of information need to be, and your intended audience's level of expertise. Then define your research topic as specifically as possible and don't be afraid to refine your topic as you learn more about it. Suggested guidelines for doing library research follow and may be adapted to fit your needs.

History of the Logarithmic Slide Rule This book was originally published in 1909. The author was born in Switzerland but spent all his adult life as an academic in the United States. His book describes the history of the slide rule from its invention in the 1620s up to the start of the 20th century. Those of us living in the age of email, the internet and air travel can only marvel at the effort he must have expended in locating documents held in libraries all over Europe and extracting pertinent information. This version was based on a copy in the Whipple Museum of the History of Science, Cambridge University. The book also has 17 plates of slide rules. The whole book can be downloaded in Word document format or as an Adobe PDF file Chapter Contents Preface The author deplores the absence of a book on the history of slide rules in view of their importance in many technical and scientific fields. The invention of Logarithms and of the Logarithmic Line of Numbers A short chapter on Napier's invention of logarithms and on Gunter's scale, which first represented logarithms in other than tabular form.
