Grandson of Michail Bakunin, he lived his youth in a refined cultural environment. Following his father's wishes, he initially took Engineering studies. He later changed to Mathematics and was awarded his degree from the University of Naples in 1925, having studied under the guidance of Ernesto Pascal but having been substantially influenced by Mario Picone. In the same year, Caccioppoli became Picone's assistant. In 1931 he was appointed to the Chair of Algebraic Analysis in Padua and eventually returned to Naples in 1934. From then, he taught group theory until 1943 and Mathematical Analysis until his death in 1959. His first publication dates back to 1926. In this work Caccioppoli began to investigate how to generalise Riesz 's theorem on the representation of linear functionals by extending the initial definition set. Nel maggio del tenne un discorso contro Hitler e Mussolini , quando quest'ultimo era in visita a Napoli: insieme alla compagna, Sara Mancuso, fece suonare l'inno francese da un'orchestrina, dopodich¨ inizi² a parlare contro il fascismo e il nazismo in presenza di agenti dell' OVRA . Venne arrestato di nuovo, ma la zia, Maria Bakunin, nipote dell'anarchico russo Mikhail Bakunin che era all'epoca docente di Chimica Matematica e a suonare il pianoforte. I suoi lavori pi¹ importanti, su un'ottantina di pubblicazioni, riguardano l' analisi funzionale e il calcolo variazionale A partire dal si dedic² allo studio delle equazioni differenziali, utilizzando per primo l'approccio topologico-funzionale. Proseguendo su questa strada, nel estese il teorema del punto fisso di Brouwer, applicando i risultati ottenuti sia alle equazioni differenziali ordinarie che per quelle alle derivate parziali.

LETTERA C Caccioppoli Renato (1904-1959) Aveva una profonda cultura in campo musicale e cinematografico. Era anche schierato politicamente (a sinistra), con una grande dirittura morale nascosta sotto una maschera d'ironia e nonchalance. Le sue Opere sono state pubblicate in due volumi, a cura dell' Unione matematica italiana , nel 1963 Fu socio dell 'Accademia nazionale dei Lincei e dell' Accademia delle Scienze di Napoli. Di Renato Caccioppoli riportiamo alcune righe di A. Guerraggio, tratte dal volume La matematica italiana tra le due guerre mondiali (ed. Marcos y Marcos, 1998). Caccioppoli deve la sua popolarità (che lo accompagnava anche in vita) al personaggio, a quel misto di genio e sregolatezza che ne ha fatto il protagonista di libri, di interviste che rievocano lui e la Napoli a cavallo della guerra, e persino di un bel film di Mario Martone. Seguendo i desideri del padre Giuseppe, noto chirurgo napoletano, si iscrisse inizialmente ad Ingegneria, per poi passare a Matematica. Nel 1925 si laureò all'Università di Napoli, sotto la guida di Ernesto Pascal, ma riconoscendo quale suo maestro soprattutto Mario Picone. Nello stesso anno divenne assistente di Picone, nel 1928 ottenne la libera docenza e nel 1931 fu a Padova, dove aveva vinto il concorso per la cattedra di Analisi Algebrica. E' appena ventottenne quando nel 1932 l'Accademia dei Lincei gli conferì il premio nazionale generale della classe di scienze fisiche. Nel 1934 tornò a Napoli per insegnare Teoria dei Gruppi, Analisi Superiore, e dal 1943, Analisi Matematica, fino alla sua morte. Gli ultimi anni della sua vita furono i più tristi: Caccioppoli probabilmente vide molte delle sue aspirazioni politiche disilluse, sentì forse venir meno la sua vena matematica, soffrì l'abbandono della moglie, Sara Mancuso, cui era profondamente legato. Prese a bere sempre più e si isolò progressivamente. Si uccise nella sua casa di Palazzo Cellammare l'8 maggio 1959. Asteroid 9934 CACCIOPPOLI Every name tells a story - whatever sad or happy: no wonder that the question posed by poor Giulietta trying to escape her fate, has quickly become a standard quotation from Shakespeare. Going through the list of asteroid names is therefore a most intriguing exercise, and in doing so some time ago, it hit my mind a name with a beautiful story which could really deserve a "tumbling stone" to be named in the sky. After the necessary official steps (see TS n. 2) were made - and with the kind support of Ted Bowell who generously offered one of the many asteroids he had discovered - the proposal to give to asteroid 1985 UC the name "Caccioppoli" was finally sent to the International Astronomical Union. Here is the story behind the name. The Caccioppoli's family fortune began in Napoli at the start of the 19.th century thanks to a successful commercial sea trading. Among the many branches of the family which can be traced since, a peculiar connection is found: on one side the family got related to the well-known russian revolutionary Michael Bakunin, while on the other to the head of the italian fascist party, Achille Starace. In between these extrema two distinguished scientists were born: Renato and Francesco Caccioppoli. RENATO CACCIOPPOLI is one of the outstanding mathematical figures of the 20.th century. He obtained the Laurea degree in mathematics at the University of Naples in 1925. In 1931 he was appointed to the Chair of Algebraic Analysis in Padua and eventually returned to Naples in 1934 where he taught Group Theory and Mathematical Analysis until his death. He carried out seminal work on linear and non-linear differential equations, elliptic equations, homological integrations and linear functionals.

L'anarchico russo era sbarcato a Napoli, convinto che la rivoluzione mondiale sarebbe partita da quella città, convinto di riuscire laddove Mario Pagano ed Eleonora Fonseca Pimentel avevano fallito nel 1799. A Napoli Bakunin si sposò ed ebbe due figlie, Maria e Sofia: la prima sarebbe diventata professoressa di Chimica nell'Ateneo Napoletano, Sofia sposò un noto chirurgo Giuseppe Caccioppoli . Renato nacque nel 1904, il 20 gennaio, e crebbe in un ambiente ricco di stimoli culturali.
