The list below is a highlight of the archives materials most pertinent to the Civil War. More detailed information on the archives books and theses listed below can be accessed through the library's database, LION . Some sixty young men attended the College of William and Mary. Benjamin S. Ewell, president of the College, and a West Point graduate, was elected captain of the College militia when war fever swept the campus in January 1861. But Ewell, a Unionist, forbade the students from flying a Confederate flag over the Wren Building. After Virginia seceded, Ewell offered his services on 23 April to the Commonwealth and Robert E. Lee appointed him major of volunteers.
Many students left school to enlist at home so the faculty voted to close the College on 10 May 1861. The town soon became crowded with Confederate troops defending the Peninsula who used college buildings as hospitals. The Battle of Williamsburg was a rear guard action fought in rain and mud on 5 May 1862. The fight was a tactical draw, and the Confederates continued their retreat toward Richmond. Williamsburg was occupied by Federal troops for the remainder of the war.

more than 100,000 cubic feet of earth." Cannon, timbers and men rose with it, flipping end over end in the air. Nine infantry companies simply vanished. As the column rose some 200 feet up, 170 feet of Confederate entrenchment disintegrated, leaving a crater 135 feet long, 97 feet wide and 30 feet deep, littered with twisted pieces of iron, shattered wheels, broken cannon, human fragments and half-buried figures screaming for help. Nearly 150 pieces of Union artillery opened fire upon the Confederate positions in what Johnson later called "the heaviest artillery fire known to our oldest officers in the field." Mahone had transformed his command into what the authors of the encyclopedic Confederate Military History New York Times The Confederacy had lost from 1032 to 1500 men. The assault had been, as Grant wrote, a "stupendous failure." The siege of Petersburg lasted another eight months.

The Burnside Family of Union County, Indiana ROBERT Burnside The Burnsides were natives of Scotland. During the great up-rising in Scotland when "Bonnie Prince Charlie", Robert and Joseph Burnside followed Prince Charles all the way to his bloody defeat at Calladen in 1746. To avoid disgrace and possible execution, the brothers fled to the "backwaters" of the American Colonies where they could begin their life anew. Robert settled in Laurens District, South Carolina along the banks of the Saluda River. There he met and married Rebecca Dodson, daughter of Henry and Mary Dodson from Huddersfield, England. She was born 9 August 1731. The Burnsides owned several acres and became a successful planter or farmer. There were at least three children born to this union: 1. James Born 11 November 1753 on the Saluda River, Burnside Plantation 2. Robert Christened 4 September 1757 Chesterfield Old Friendship Church 3. Joseph Christened 23 March 1755 Chesterfield Old Friendship Church At the beginning of the revolutionary war, Robert declared his loyalty to the King and Crown and vowed to fight on the side of the British. Although Robert was too advanced in years to take of arms for "The King, The Church and the Constitution" his eldest son, James commanded a company of Tory Soldiers.

Teenagers in holiday row
Birch Them! Sentence on Four Scots
(extract)
By Bill Robertson FOUR 19-year-old Glasgow youths were yesterday BIRCHED on the orders of an Isle of Man magistrate. The four, all on holiday at Douglas, were each given nine strokes on their bare buttocks. The "sentence" followed a promenade battle in which bottles and a deck-chair were used as weapons. Three other holidaymakers were hurt, the jaw of one was broken. 'Inhuman' Last night the magistrate who ordered the birching, burly, grey-haired Mr Tom Radcliffe, said: "The birch may be called medieval, inhuman even sadistic. All I know is IT WORKS." Mr Radcliffe, the chief magistrate at Douglas, was home for tea after his latest session on the bench. Back in the town's police cells, a police officer watched by a doctor was wielding the birch. The holiday isle, with 25,000 Glasgow Fair folks on its beaches, is the only place in Britain where the birch is still used. Mr Radcliffe went on: "The birch is used only in bad cases involving personal injury to innocent people.

David Burnside: A UUP MP
The Ulster Unionist Party's David Burnside has taken the South Antrim seat off the Democratic Unionist Party. It is a personal victory for Mr Burnside who last year lost out in a by-election to the DUP's William McCrea, following the death of the sitting MP. It was a victory which stunned the Ulster Unionist Party, as South Antrim had been a notoriously safe Ulster Unionist seat. But after the DUP holding the seat for just a few months, the Ulster Unionists have won it back with a majority of about 1,000. Afterwards, Mr Burnside said: "I voted for the agreement. I didn't vote for the treatment of the RUC. "I did not vote for the terrorists in government without decommissioning." "The reason why there has been disillusionment within the unionist community, within my own party and expressed through the Democratic Unionist Party and other unionist parties, is because decommissioning has not taken place," he said.

95. GENERAL WHO
In preparation for a future invasion, burnside decided to send a cavalry raid intoEast Tennessee to obtain information on troop strength and william P. Sanders
http://www.korrnet.org/kcwrt/history/sanders99D.htm
GENERAL WHO? William P. Sanders by Dorothy E. Kelly ddkelly@earthlink.net Civil War historians outside the East Tennessee area know little or nothing about the Federal general who gave his life at Knoxville. But how much do WE know about this man whose name adorns modern buildings, hospitals, and even a neighborhood? Born under the Southern skies of Kentucky and raised in the humid Mississippi river town of Natchez, William Price Sanders was a young Federal officer on his way up when he died at Knoxville in 1863. He had been a general one month and one day. Sanders was the sixth child of Margaret and Lewis Sanders, a prominent Mississippi attorney. According to his sister, Elizabeth J. Sanders Haggin, William Price was named for a physician uncle and was known as "Doc" to family and friends, a nickname which was later adopted by his fellow officers. Sanders’ politically connected father secured his appointment to West Point in 1852. His career at West Point was somewhat rocky. A May, 1854 letter from West Point Commandant, Robert E. Lee, announced his impending dismissal for want of application, deficiency in academics and accumulation of numerous demerits. With the aid of a fellow Mississippian-Secretary of War Jefferson Davis-Sanders avoided dismissal and went on to graduate in 1856. In addition to Sanders, two of his West Point classmates played important roles in the Civil War in East Tennessee: Orlando M. Poe, Burnside’s Chief Engineer and designer of the Knoxville fortifications, and E. Porter Alexander, Longstreet’s Chief of Artillery.
