This talking book comes with an interactive ''magic pen'' that works like a hand-held computer mouse pointer. Children can opt to turn the paper pages and listen to the story read with different voices for each character. Or they can interrupt the read-aloud session to play with the magic pen (permanently attached with a wire). They can point the pen tip to any word on a page and hear it pronounced, or touch a picture and hear a sound effect (such as ''Strike one!'' for the baseball bat). Very similar to the popular Living Books computer games, this 10-by-11-inch book is more portable than a home computer. Stories in this set include Lil's Loose Tooth, Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever, and Winnie the Pooh in A Sweet Good Morning. The set also includes a paper piano keyboard and map and human anatomy games. Gail Hudson

William Burnside was of Scottish ancestry on his father's side. He graduated from Pembroke College Cambridge in 1875 as second wrangler , bracketed with George Chrystal . Burnside was considered to have the most elegant mathematical style. He was then awarded a fellowship at Pembroke which he held from 1875 to 1886. Among his teachers at Cambridge were Stokes Adams and Maxwell in Applied Mathematics and Cayley in Pure Mathematics. They were to influence greatly the direction that Burnside's research was to take. His first paper in 1883 considered elliptic functions but after 1885, the year he was appointed professor of mathematics at the Royal Naval College at Greenwich, his work turned to hydrodynamics. Much of Burnside's work on hydrodynamics involved the use of complex variable and in papers of 1891 and 1892 he considered the group of linear fractional transformations of a complex variable. His work quickly turned to the study of groups and from 1894 onwards he was to be occupied almost entirely with the study of group theory.

William Burnside
William Burnside ) was an English mathematician . He his most known as one of the founders of the theory of finite groups. Burnside was born in London, and attended St. John's and Pembroke Collegess at the University of Cambridge , where he was second wrangler in 1875. He lectured at Cambridge for the following 10 years, before being appointed professor of mathematics at the Royal Naval College in Greenwich . While this was a little outside the main centers of British mathematical research, Burnside remained a very active researcher, publishing more than 150 papers in his career. Burnside's early work was in applied mathematics. This work was of sufficient distinction to merit his election as a fellow of the Royal Society in 1893, though it is little remembered today. Around the same time as his election his interests turned to study of finite groups. This was not a particularly popular subject in late 19th century Britain, and his work on it was underappreciated until some years later. The central part of Burnside's group theory work was in the area of group representations, complementing and sometimes competing with the work of

GOOD HOPE COMMUNITY Prepared by Harriet Thrash
Located in the most beautiful part of Harrison County along the West Fork River and tributaries about half way between Clarksburg and Weston is the county community known as Good Hope. The state road from Pittsburgh to Charleston now under construction, passes directly through this community, and other roads leading into this, viz: Twolick and Isaacs Creek, are to be hard surfaced in the near future. Sixty-four families comprise the community of Good Hope with a population of 270, all American born, no foreign blood of any kind. Most of the families are descendants of the pioneers who settled in this community from 125 to 150 years ago. The most prominent of these families who were among the first settlers are the Washburns, Posts, Laws, McConkeys, Cheuvronts, Burnsides, Carders, Hinkles, Somervilles, Ramages, Tinglers, Yerkeys and Browns. The land in this community lays well and is highly cultivated. Some of the best farming land in Harrison County is in this vicinity and the farmers take great pride not only in cultivating their farms but in raising the best cattle, hogs, chickens, etc., some of which have carried off premiums at the county fairs. The upland is fine for grazing and there is no unsightly filth decorating the hills as can be seen in some localities. The community is blessed with natural resources; gas on every farm, oil, coal, timber, sand, clay and building stone. Bethel Church The present church here is the third Bethel. The first one was known as "Old Bethel" but at this time the date of its foundation is not definitely known. It was located on the Somerville farm about one mile below Good Hope. There is a large grave yard there with tombstones marking many a grave. Bethel M. E. Church has more than one hundred members.

Burnside, William
English mathematician who made advances in automorphic functions, group theory, and the theory of probability.
Burnside was born in London and educated at Cambridge, where he became a lecturer. In 1885 he left Cambridge to take up the chair of mathematics at the Royal Naval College in Greenwich, London; he retired 1919.
Burnside's study of elliptic functions led him, over the years, to study the functions of real variables and the theory of functions in general. One of his most influential papers, written 1892, was a development of some work by French mathematician on automorphic functions.
His study of automorphic functions in turn brought him to the field of group theory, particularly the theory of the discontinuous group of finite order. In 1897 he published the first book on group theory to appear in English; the revised edition 1911 is considered a standard work. A nearly completed manuscript on probability theory was published after his death.

Page 361 WILLIAM H. BURNSIDE The subject of our sketch was reared on a farm, and attended the country schools. He resided at home until 1883, when he located on the farm on which he now resides. This land he purchased in 1882, which then comprised 320 acres, to which he has since added fifty acres more, making altogether 370 acres of well improved land, which he now owns. He has erected good buildings, a residence and barns for grain and stock and other modern improvements, and has put his land under a high state of cultivation. Besides agriculture, he also raises stock principally short-horn cattle, in which latter pursuit he is very successful. He affiliates with the Republican party, but is now an office seeker, taking only such interest as all good citizens feel in the advancement and welfare of their native county and State.

Subject: William Burnside Author: A.Mann@greenwich.ac.uk Organization: the University of Greenwich Date: Mon, 21 Dec 1998 11:36:12 GMT (With apologies for any cross-posting) With Peter Neumann and Julia Tompson, I am editing the collected papers of William Burnside (the group theorist). We are interested in any photographs of Burnside: we've got a number through the Royal Society, London Mathematical Society, Royal Naval College, National Protrait Gallery and Pembroke College, Cambridge (and I know of one at the Institut Mittag-Leffler) but does anyone know of any others? We'd be particularly interested in anything of Burnside as a young man, as the ones we have all show him later in life.
