24. The Gospel Of John And The Jews

John T. Townsend, "The Gospel of John and the Jews: The Story of a Religious Divorce" in Alan T. Davies, ed., Antisemitism and the Foundations of Christianity (Paulist Press, 1979): 72-97 It is not surprising that Rosemary Ruether has found the fullest development of New Testament anti-Jewish bias within the Gospel of John. Her estimate of the gospel's anti-Jewish stance reflects the opinion of most exegetes. The reasons for this evaluation of the gospel are well-known and often repeated. First of all, John proclaims a replacement theology. What John's Jewish contemporaries held dear the evangelist seems to have abolished and replaced with the Christian Jesus. John 15:1-17 represents Jesus as "the vine," a well-known symbol for God's people Israel (Ps. 80:8 [MT 9]16 [17]; Hos. 10:1; see Jer. Ezek. Hos 14:7 [8]; II Esdras Thus Jesus replaces Israel. As for the Jews, they have no right to call themselves children of Abraham (8:39f.). In respect to the Jewish Law, John regards it as something alien to Christians (8:17; 10:34; 15:25), and he depicts Jesus ignoring it publicly (5:9-17; 9:16). As the one who truly reveals God's will, Jesus has become the Law's replacement (cf. 1:17; 5:39f., etc.) In rabbinic circles, typical symbols for the Law of Moses included bread, light, water and wine.

The WEIRs listed below arrived in Northumberland County, Ontario from Ireland between about 1829 and 1837. Census and church records indicate that they were Protestant Irish. My assumption is that they were all related, but more research is required to be certain. The notes following the table below outline the connections I have found so far. If you are descended from any of these lines, please contact me. I have lots of information to share. Maybe we can untangle this mystery together. RECTOR’S REPORT
Christ is Risen! What an astonishing fact that we celebrate each Easter. It changes absolutely everything in our lives now and for ever. In this world Jesus is present with us, closer to us than can be imagined. His presence, God and the Holy Sprit’s presence walks with us, celebrates and consoles us and gives us the strength to carry on, the strength to forgive. Elsewhere in this newsletter you will read about the proposed possible changes to our church interior. The main reason for needing changes is that our sanctuary area is cramped and crowded. It is very difficult to climb the steps for communion and presents an obstacle course of feet and legs to navigate. The choir and the organ are not at a comfortable place for each other either. Bringing the altar closer to the congregation is an important symbolic step too and either possible version will bring a better experience of worship. Our church is an historical and beautiful building. It will always stay that way but it was built for another age when communion was perhaps 4 or 6 times a year.
