William Brouncker was the elder son of Sir William Brouncker, a man of high importance who was closely associated with the kings of England and had fought against the Scots in 1639. He served Charles I as one of his privy chamber and acted as vice-chamberlain to his son Charles, Prince of Wales. William Brouncker's mother was Winifred Leigh who came from Newenhan in Warwickshire. In a time in England when King and Parliament would fight the Civil War, the Brouncker family were staunch Royalist supporters. We know little of Brouncker's early life. We have given 1620 as his date of birth but this is a guess made by historians rather than coming from any specific evidence. His place of birth is also a guess. Whether he was born in Ireland or England is even a matter of debate with no firm evidence to support either hypothesis. About the first we know for certain of Brouncker is that he entered Oxford University when he was sixteen years old and there he studied mathematics, languages and medicine. It is doubtful whether Brouncker learned more than arithmetic at Oxford, for Wallis , giving the status of mathematics at this time, wrote:- ... mathematics, at that time with us, were scarce looked on as academical studies, but rather mechanical - as the business of traders, merchants, seamen, carpenters, surveyors of lands and the like.

(Alphabetically) Next Welcome page William Brouncker , Second Viscount Brouncker of Castle Lyons, was a founder and the first president (1662-1677) of the Royal Society of London. Brouncker graduated from Oxford University in 1647, and was president of Gresham College, London from 1664 to 1667. Brouncker's mathematical achievements include work on continued fractions and calculating logarithms by infinite series. In 1655 he gave a continued fraction expansion of Wallis told Huygens of this result and Huygens doubted that it was true. However after Brouncker correctly computed the first 10 places in the decimal expansion of ¹ using this formula, Huygens accepted the result. Probably also in 1665 Brouncker computed the quadrature of the hyperbola although he did not publish this result until 1668. Brouncker gave a method of solution to the diophantine equation x - ay which evolved in a series of letters during 1657-58 and which first appears in Fermat 's work. This was named

William, Viscount Brouncker (c.1620 - 1684)
From `A Short Account of the History of Mathematics' (4th edition, 1908) by W. W. Rouse Ball. William, Viscount Brouncker , one of the founders of the Royal Society of London, born about 1620, and died on April 5, 1684, was among the most brilliant mathematicians of this time, and was in intimate relations with Wallis, Fermat, and other leading mathematicians. I mentioned above his curious reproduction of Brahmagupta's solution of a certain indeterminate equation. Brouncker proved that the area enclosed between the equilateral hyperbola xy = 1, the axis of x , and the ordinates x = 1 and x = 2, is equal either to or to He also worked out other similar expressions for different areas bounded by the hyperbola and straight lines. He wrote on the rectification of the parabola and of the cycloid. It is noticeable that he used infinite series to express quantities whose values he could not otherwise determine. In answer to a request of Wallis to attempt the quadrature of the circle he shewed that the ratio of the area of a circle to the area of the circumscribed square, that is, the ratio of to 4, is equal to the ratio of

Occupation: Gentry, Government Official
Sir William Brouncker was a Gentleman of the Privy Chamber to Charles I and held a number of governmental appointments.
His financial status is a bit unclear. It is reported that he spent all of his resources to buy an Irish peerage in 1645. However, this was during a time when he was probably cut off from the income of his Irish estate. His son lived well on the estate he inherited. I think that wealthy is the description before the Civil War impinged on him.

German versions of documents and the several What's New pages are omitted here. Please note that only some single files are merely tables of contents. Therefore, do not look only into the files in the lowest hierchary. Most files in higher hierarchies contain also useful information as well as links. E.g., there are three museums indicated under History of Astronomy - Museums . However, the museums page itself contains links to dozens of other museums.

    Occupation: Artisan
Anthony Petty was a cloth worker and taylor; he owned his own home and probably some farm land.
Aubrey states that he left little or no estate, and most biographers conclude that he was poor. It is worth noting, however, that William Petty owned a house in Romsey, presumably the paternal one. On the other hand, William went to sea at age fifteen as a cabin boy. On the whole, I conclude that the father was poor.

    Schooling: Utrecht, Leiden, Oxford
When stranded in Caen in the 1630s, Petty studied for a year with the Jesuits.
Studied Medicine at Utrecht, Leiden, Amsterdam, and Paris, 1643-46. He matriculated in Leiden in 1644, and I think there would have been no place to study medicine in Utrecht except the university. Amsterdam is another matter; virtually nothing is said about it. It seem clear that in Paris Petty studied outside the university. No evidence of B.A. and every reason to think there was none. He is one of two in this catalogue for whom I will list an M.D. without a B.A. or its equivalent.
He went to Oxford about 1648 to study medicine. M.D., 1650.
