    Bronowski's bricks - the smokeless fuel pioneered by the famous scientist, academic and broadcaster
    Listener's query "In the early 1970s BBC Television ran Jacob Bronowski's fine documentary series called The Ascent of Man . The programmes made a huge impression because Dr Bronowski made arts and the sciences interesting and accessible to all. I recently stumbled on the fact that Dr Bronowski worked for the National Coal Board in the 1950s, developing smokeless briquettes called 'Bronowski's bricks'. What's the story and what happened to the bricks?" Brief summary Jacob Bronowski (1908-74), polymath, came to Britain at the age of 12. His family (his father was a businessman) had moved to Germany when that country was occupied by Russia during the Great War and then to London when the war was over. When Bronowski arrived he spoke no English - he once said that he learnt the word 'water' and its chemical formula at the same time. He went to school in London and then to Cambridge and was a mathematician, though maintained his lifelong passion for the arts and humanities. He became British in 1934 and pursued an academic career. During the Second World War he was in military research, working on bombing. After the war he went to Japan to report on the effects of the atomic bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. What he saw made him turn his back on any further military work. By accident he was invited to broadcast on BBC Radio where he was an overnight success and then became a regular member of
