web hosting domain names email addresses Black Magic and White Magic by Jacob Bronowski The origins of science are intertwined with the pursuit of the occult subjects the contemplation of which would make many a modern scientist shudder with distaste. When John Maynard Keynes bought a trunk full of Isaac Newton's papers and inspected them,he was startled to find that Newton spent as much time studying alchemy and numerology as he did formulating the laws of motion. Newton ,he declared,"was the last of the magicians." But not all magic is the same,as the scientist-philosopher Jacob Bronowski (1908 - 1974) explains.
....The form of magic that I shall discuss is the notion that there is a way of having a power over nature which simply depends on hitting the right key.If you say "open sesame" then nature will open for you;if you are an expert then nature will open for you;if you are a specialist of some kind or if you are remote,if you are esoteric,if you are an initiate there is some way of getting into nature which is not accessible to other people.
there is a way of having a power which is esoteric and does not depend on generally accessible knowledge.

Quotes
"I grew up to be indifferent to the distinction between literature and science, which in my teens were simply two languages for experience that I learned together." "Dissent is the mark of freedom" "Sooner or later every one of us breathes an atom that has been breathed before by anyone you can think of who has lived before us-Michelangelo or George Washington or Moses." "It is said that science will dehumanise people and turn them into numbers. That is false, tragically false. Look for yourself. This is the concentration camp and crematorium at Auschwitz. This is where people were turned into numbers. Into this pond were flushed the ashes of some four million people. And that was not done by gas. It was done by arrogance. It was done by dogma. It was done by ignorance. When people believe that they have absolute knowledge, with no test in reality, this is how they behave. This is what men do when they aspire to the knowledge of gods."

Knowledge as Algorithm and as Metaphor
Chapter 3 from The Origins of Knowledge and Imagination by Jacob Bronowski. Yale Univ. Press 1978 [Jacob Bronowski, mathematician and scientist, is perhaps best known as the author of The Ascent of Man and Science and Human Values. Born in 1908 and trained as a mathematician, Bronowski spent the war years studying the economic effects of bombing and afterward worked for the British government in applied mathematics. In 1964 he became a fellow of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in San Diego. His unique combination of scientific, literary, and ethical interests has made him a leading intellectual figure of the past two decades. Bronowski died in 1974.] Let me recall that the program that I have set myself in these six lectures [the Silliman Lectures at Yale] is that which Immanuel Kant proposed early in his life, to construct a natural philosophy which was based on the physical ability of human beings to receive and translate their experience of the outside world. This was an enterprise which Kant abandoned when he actually came to write philosophy on a large scale. S = klogW , and I suppose if Newton had had any control over what was to be put on his grave- stone, he would have chosen G = kmm'/r2.

"Has there ever been a society which has died of dissent? Several have died of conformity in our lifetime." Jacob Bronowski To give you a scant bit of background for the video that we are about to see, I've compiled a few quotes from Jacob Bronowski, from his book Science and Human Values . I've juggled these selections into an order which maybe makes sense in this extremely compressed form, but does not do justice to the original structure. Originally, these were presented in a series of three lectures at MIT in 1953. The book consists of three parts, revised somewhat in 1965. The video is from The Ascent of Man , produced in the 70s. The video production is a bit dated, but the themes are as important today as then. I initially decided to bring this into our class because of the general connection with science and religion. The video deals not only with uncertainty in our measurements, but also in moral issues and how we humans deal with each other. It now seems particularly appropriate in light of the recent events. Bronowski, a scientist and humanist philosopher, raises the question this way:

ASCENT OF MAN, THE, T. V. Show, 1973, Jacob Bronowski, Writer and Host:, This is a pioneering effort in non-fiction television. The series is really a major book done in television. Bronowski presented his theories on man's rise to civilization, the growth of ideas, and the chain of innovation, etc, all in his own unique Marxist/mystical scheme (J.B was a man of intellectual extremes). Rather than use usual documentary techniques, the BBC used a new approach. When
Bronowski talks about some event in some far away place, they put him in the actual setting. It was like watching a peripatetic philosopher who could walk all over the world, just to make a point. Later, Carl Sagan would do a similar series on cosmology (1980), but only James Burke's two shows on scientific innovation would come close to duplicating Bronowski's style and charisma in his arguments. Connections Quote To my mind it is a mistake to think of creative activity as something unusual. A man becomes creative whether he is an artist or a scientist, when he finds a new unity in the variety of nature. He does so by finding a likeness between things which were not thought alike before... The creative mind is a mind that looks for unexpected likeness. Jacob Bronowski

Science meets Art: This Quarter and Jacob Bronowski by Thomas Girst Click to enlarge Cover for This Quarter , article by André Breton, edited by Edward W. Titus, Paris: The Black Manikin Press, September 1932 Th is Quarter (vol. V, no. 1) of September 1932 was published and edited by Edward B. Titus. In his third year as editor for the The Black Manickin Press, he also published the memoirs of Kiki de Montparnasse and books by Anaïs Nin. This Quarter 's "Surrealist Number" contains articles, prose and poems by important artists and writers of the movement, among them Salvador Dalí, Paul Eluard, Max Ernst, René Crevel and Tristan Tzara. Samuel Beckett also translated some of the poems. In his editorial note, Edward W. Titus describes the tremendous impact of Surrealism, however acknowledging with embarrassment the unhappiness of guest editor André Breton at having been asked to leave out "politics and such other issues not be[ing] in honeyed accord with Anglo-American censorship usages." It is in this issue that for the first time ever, various unpublished notes by Duchamp appear, two years prior to the publication of his Green Box in 1934. Curiously enough, the chosen notes include various mentionings of the title of Duchamp's posthumously revealed work:
