Jacob Bronowski 's father, Abram Bronowski, was the owner of a haberdashery firm which traded between Poland and London, and his mother was Celia Flatto. When Russia occupied Poland during World War I Bronowski's family emigrated to Germany where they lived until the war ended. Then, in 1920, the family moved to London, England. Things were not easy for Bruno, as Bronowski was known, when he arrived in England since he spoke no English. This meant a difficult start for him at the Central Foundation School in London. At school he soon found an equal interest for both science and literature. He later wrote:- I grew up to be indifferent to the distinction between literature and science, which in my teens were simply two languages for experience that I learned together. Bronowski won a mathematics scholarship to Jesus College, Cambridge, and there he began his mathematical studies. He was a Wrangler (First Class) in Part I of the mathematical tripos in 1928 and Senior Wrangler (ranked top of the list of First Class students) in Part II of the mathematical tripos in 1930. However at Cambridge Bronowski's interests were much wider than mathematics and he continued with his love of literature editing a literary magazine

About Winners
The world is full of people who never quite get into the first team and who just miss the prizes at the flower show.
About Intelligence
To me, being an intellectual doesn't mean knowing about intellectual issues; it means taking pleasure in them.
About Nature Man masters nature not by force but by understanding. This is why science has succeeded where magic failed: because it has looked for no spell to cast over nature. About Science That is the essence of science: ask an impertinent question, and you are on the way to a pertinent answer. About Science No science is immune to the infection of politics and the corruption of power. About Science It doesn't matter whether you're talking about bombs or the intelligence quotients of one race as against another if a man is a scientist, like me, he'll always say ''Publish and be damned.'' About Science Science has nothing to be ashamed of even in the ruins of Nagasaki. The shame is theirs who appeal to other values than the human imaginative values which science has evolved.

Jacob Bronowski
It's unfortunate that the writings of Jacob Bronowski are not better-known. Sure, he wrote The Ascent of Man and made a television program of the same name, but it's his other works that I find fascinating (or did when I read them back in my teenage years). Just last night I started re-reading one of his books ( The Visionary Eye ) in preparation for writing an essay about him, and I found something immediately that I connected with strongly. The short essay in question was his introduction to a later release of his early book The Poet's Defence . He mentions that the role of the critic exists in the arts but not in science. Now, he doesn't think much of critics, and in that early work he tried to discover a philosophy of poetry through a reading of what some great poets (Pope, Blake, Housman, etc.) had written on the nature of poetry pointedly not through a reading of estheticians and literary critics. And Bronowski says it is valuable to do the same with science not depend on the armchair philosophers to come to a philosophy of science, but to see what scientists really do and what excellent scientists think about their vocation. Of course such a project must be reflective (separating the wheat from the chaff in the sometimes muddled thinking of practictioners), but it is empirical in a way that so much philosophy is not. I like Bronowski because he was a modern renaissance man (a writer of mathematical theorems and of poems, a researcher into biology and into ethics, a scientist and an artist). I like him too for his humanism. He was focused on facts (and essential facts at that), unlike our modern academics. His outlook was scientific but not materialistic. I hope to bring out some of these elements in the essay that I plan to write about him.

"And as originality and independence are private needs for the existence of a science, so dissent and freedom are its public needs. The safeguards which it must offer are apparent: free inquiry, free thought, free speech, tolerance. These freedoms of tolerance have never been notable in a dogmatic society, even when the dogma was Christian. Has there ever been a society which has died of dissent? Several have died of conformity in our lifetimes." Bronowski was born in Poland in 1908. In 1912, to escape the political tumults of Russian Poland, Jacob's family moved—of all places, to Germany. There, they were trapped by World War I, as Jewish enemy aliens. In 1920, they escaped to England, where Jacob arrived, a boy of 12, knowing only two words of English. But by 1927, he would be an aspiring poet and a brilliant mathematician. Bronowski attended Cambridge, studying math and editing a magazine called

Bronowski, Jacob
Polish-born British scientist, broadcaster, and writer, who enthusiastically popularized scientific knowledge in several books and in the 13-part BBC television documentary The Ascent of Man, issued as a book 1973.
Bronowski fled with his family to Germany when, in World War I, Russia occupied his native Poland. Moving to the UK 1920, he studied mathematics at Cambridge. He lectured at University College, Hull, 1934-42, and then did military research during World War II, remaining a government official until 1963. His last appointment was at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in California, from 1964.
His book The Common Sense of Science 1951 displayed the history and workings of science around three central notions: cause, chance, and order. Science and Human Values 1958 collected newspaper articles written for the New York Times about nuclear science and the morality of nuclear weapons. The Western Intellectual Tradition 1960 is an illuminating survey of the growth of political, philosophical, and scientific knowledge from the Renaissance to the 19th century, written with Bruce Mazlish. Bronowski also wrote about literature; for example, William Blake and the Age of Revolution 1965.

19. Darwinism And The Division Of Labour
The founding conference of the British Society for the Social Responsibility in Science in November 1970, was on the theme, 'The Social Impact of Modern Biology'. The conference was attended by a number of eminent scientists, e.g., Nobel Laureates James Watson, Jaques Monod, Maurice Wilkins; David Bohm, jacob bronowski, R.G. Edwards (of Steptoe Edwards, the pioneers of 'testtube babies'), as well as some radicals, Hilary Steven Rose, John Beckwith. It was, perhaps, the last moment when radicals and posh scientists were relatively united. The talk was published in The Listener, 17 August 1972, pp. 202-5 and in Science as Culture no. 9 110-24, 1990.
