Science in Christian Perspective

THE SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTION MISCONSTRUED:
A reply to David Siemens and others
DAVID C. LINDBERG*
From: JASA (September 1968): 87-91, 97. I I gnorance of the history of science has been the greatest stumbling-block for many who have attempted to describe the relationship between the Protestant Reformation and scientific developments of the 16th and 17th centuries. Non-historians of science, blissfully uninformed, rhapsodize about the transformation of scientific thought that occurred during this period, convinced not only that something dramatic happened, but also that they know what it was. This is the time, they tell us, when modern science began: Copernicus threw off the fetters of ancient astronomical systems; Galileo rejected Aristotelian physics and the scholastic method of disputation in favor of the teachings of the senses; finally, Newton brought intelligibility to the universe by formulating a science based upon mathematical law. And what was the cause of this great awakening? Protestant writers have generally seen it as a product of the Reformation; Catholics have been more prone to stress the Christian world view in general; nontheists have tended to see it as an expression of a new "hedonist-libertarian spirit" of the Renaissance. In the present paper, I am interested primarily in the former point of view, which I can illustrate with a sampling of recent claims. John Montgomery has written that "the simultaneity of the Copernican and Lutheran revolutions suggests a more than accidental relationship between them."

Jewish genealogical sources at London Metropolitan Archives
London Metropolitan Archives is the largest local authority record office in the United Kingdom. Some 31 miles of archives are housed in Clerkenwell, comprising an enormous amount of information about the capital and its citizens. The records of London government, courts, hospitals, charities and businesses dating from the twelfth century to the present day are complemented by a photograph collection of 2 million images and extensive map and print holdings. Together, these records reflect the social, historical, political and economic life of London and Londoners.
Since the mid seventeenth century the majority of Jews in Britain have lived in London. Anglo-Jewish organisations of local, national and international importance are based in the capital and many of them have deposited their records at London Metropolitan Archives. In this article collections which may be of particular interest to Jewish genealogists are detailed.
Genealogists will be particularly interested in the admission and discharge registers of pupils LMA holds for JFS. These date from 1869-1939. For researchers who are interested in earlier lists of pupils there are some partial lists (mainly 1826-1828) contained in minute books.

Letter from headmaster Thomas Bentley to Nina on his retirement I was born at Elmwood Street, Leeds, in 1915. My father, Joseph Rosenberg, was a bespoke tailor. Most of the tailors lived in the Leylands nearby and they all had workshops on top of the terrace houses. His father, my grandfather, Meyer, was born in Lithuania and came over to England in his twenties with his young wife, Dora, and daughter, Sarah. He lived and worked in the Leylands all his life as a shoemaker. My maternal great grandmother, Chayie Raisman, was the first Jewish baker in Leeds. Known as Chayie 'die Shvartsy' (the black one) perhaps because of her black hair, she was famous for her continental-style black bread.

I was always musical and from a very early age could play the piano by ear. I studied under 'the' pianoforte teacher of that time, Lloyd Hartley, who had himself been a pupil of the famous Tobias Mathay. When I was a pupil at Lovell Road School, the headmaster, Thomas Bentley, asked me to play the piano at the regular morning assemblies. Mr. Bentley was the most loved headmaster in the whole world. When he retired he was overwhelmed with tributes of gratitude and affection from the community he had served so well - and even in recent years I and other former pupils (all now in our 70's and 80's) donated money to have a bench in the playground of the Brodetsky Jewish School dedicated in his memory and to have his name inscribed in the Golden Book (a commemorative book maintained by donations to the Jewish National Fund and inscribed with the names of those meriting particular honour).

Any ideas where I can obtain a copy of the pamphlet by Selig Brodetsky entitled "Astronomy in the Babylonian Talmud"? It's about 30 pages and was published by Kesser Torah in 1979. Thank you so much.
