Henry Briggs (-1686)
Henry Briggs, in his own words If he could speak to us today, Henry Briggs might describe his life as follows.
My named appeared first in the few remaining records of Charles City County 3 February 1657/8 when I witnessed a deed for Elizabeth Hacker. On 3 June 1662 the court granted me administration of the estate of Gabriel Briggs who may have been my father or brother. Col. Edward Hill guaranteed my administrator’s bond for that estate. Just south of Charles City is Surry County where I evidently moved by 5 November 1662 when that court called me to serve on a jury. I became the fourth husband of Mary (—) Blunt Ford Washington and we were the parents of Henry, Charles, Samuel, George, and Mary Briggs. My second wife was Margery, the widow of John Gilliam The will I made in September 1681 provided a comfortable estate for Margery and divided my land among my 4 sons. To daughter Mary, I left some dishes and other household items. Although I lived nearly another 5 years, I evidently had no reason to modify its terms. While I do not know happened to Mary, I can tell you that my sons remained in Surry where Henry was the official interpreter of the Southern Indians. He, Samuel, and Charles all had large families, but George died unmarried.

Samuel Briggs (c.1672-1737)
Samuel Briggs, in his own words If he could speak to us today, Samuel Briggs might describe his life as follows.
I was born about 1672, a son of Henry and Mary Briggs. My wife was Edward Bailey’s daughter Mary Bailey . Mr. Bailey, whose will left daughter Mary Briggs 40 shillings, owned land on Cyprus Swamp that flows into Blackwater Swamp near where I lived. I paid taxes on 300 acres in Surry County in 1704. This was probably the land I inherited from my father, Henry, in 1686 and from my brother George who died in 1698. The governor granted me 290 acres on Blackwater Swamp 16 June 1714, and 250 acres on Hunting Quarter 28 September 1732. I was also a very early settler along Waqua Creek in Brunswick County where I got 386 acres 13 October 1727 and 284 acres 19 June 1735. Surry County records mention me little and never show that I held any office. The father of 12, I made my will in Surry 26 March 1736 giving each son their own plantation and “Negroes.” Married daughters got £5 and I gave 1 or 2 “Negroes” to the others. I died sometime the next year. Although most of my children remained in Surry, Robert and Ann moved to Brunswick County and Nathaniel became a Quaker minister in Sussex County.

This talking book comes with an interactive ''magic pen'' that works like a hand-held computer mouse pointer. Children can opt to turn the paper pages and listen to the story read with different voices for each character. Or they can interrupt the read-aloud session to play with the magic pen (permanently attached with a wire). They can point the pen tip to any word on a page and hear it pronounced, or touch a picture and hear a sound effect (such as ''Strike one!'' for the baseball bat). Very similar to the popular Living Books computer games, this 10-by-11-inch book is more portable than a home computer. Stories in this set include Lil's Loose Tooth, Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever, and Winnie the Pooh in A Sweet Good Morning. The set also includes a paper piano keyboard and map and human anatomy games. Gail Hudson

Henry Briggs English mathematician , was born at Warley Wood, near Halifax , in Yorkshire . He graduated at St John's College Cambridge , in 1581, and obtained a fellowship in . In he was made reader of the physical lecture founded by Dr Thomas Linacre , and in first professor of geometry in Gresham College, London In his lectures at Gresham College he proposed the alteration of the scale of logarithms from the hyperbolic form which John Napier had given them, to that in which unity is assumed as the logarithm of the ratio of ten to one; and soon afterwards he wrote to the inventor on the subject. In he paid a visit to Napier at Edinburgh in order to discuss the suggested change; and next year he repeated his visit for a similar purpose. During these conferences the alteration proposed by Briggs was agreed upon; and on his return from his second visit to Edinburgh, in he accordingly published the first chiliad of his logarithms. In he was appointed Savilian professor of geometry at Oxford , and resigned his professorship of Gresham College in July . Soon after his settlement at Oxford he was incorporated master of arts. In he published a small tract on the North-West Passage to the South Seas, through the Continent of Virginia and

Bucknall, Professor G.A.D. Briggs, T. Okayasu Thin polymer films can demonstrate interesting dewetting behaviour on non-wetting surfaces. By capping such unstable thin films by thick rigid layers this dewetting can be prevented. By selectively capping these inherently unstable thin films by semi-rigid capping layers it is possible to produce a surface topology with a random wave morphology. This project aims to understand this phenomena and ways to control the feature size and more particularly anisotropy of the resulting structures. Thomas Smith, writing early in the 18th century, said that Briggs' parents were "humble of class and rather slender of means." Humble of class could mean too many things to guess, but I take the slender means to state unmistakably that they were poor. Smith indicates that Briggs could not have attended Cambridge without financial assistance from his college.

Briggs is especially known for his publication of tables of logarithms to the base 10, first Logarithmorum chilias prima, 1617, and later Arithmetica logarithmetica, 1624.
He also composed a work on trigonometry (basically tables, both of the functions and of the logs of sines and tangents) that was left unfinished at his death; Gellibrand completed and published it. And he left quite a few mathematical manuscripts that remained unpublished.

At the top of the column on the left-hand side of the page you will see "Collections" as the first item. When you open this page, you will see on the right-hand side of the page a column where the fourth item says "Search collections." When you open that page, you will find the search engine; simply enter the names of the artist and the painting. If you click on the artist's name, you will see all the works by that particular artist at the Tate Gallery. If you click on the name of the painting, you will be taken to the image. Most of these images can be enlarged by clicking on them. If the picture has a display caption, be sure to read it; the notes will supplement what I have to say about the illustrations.
