History
CREATOR
Rev. Shokai Kanai
Sakyamuni Buddha did not talk about a creator of the universe. He has said that all things appear and disappear by reasons of an endless series of causes and conditions. Therefore, birth and death are not God's will but are caused by conditions. If Buddhism denies the creator , why did Nichiren Daishonin write about Dai Bonten and Tensho Daijin on his Mandala Gohonzon? Dai Bonten (Brahmadeva in Sanskrit) is a god who is the creator of the universe in Brahmanism, an ancient Hindu religion. Dai Bonten or Brahman Heavenly-King who was the lord of the Saha World (the earth) was present at the assembly in Chapter one of the Lotus Sutra together with the other gods, human beings, and non-human beings. Nichiren accepted Brahman Heavenly-King and Taishaku-ten as representatives of the Hindu Gods. Taishaku-ten is a god who watches over moral behavior of human beings. Tensho Daijin (Amaterasu Omikami) is said to be a goddess and a daughter of Izanagi and Izanami who created Japan. She is treated as the original ancestor of Japanese emperors. According to Nihon Shoki and Kojiki, Japanese epics, Izanagi and Izanami have created the islands of Japan by dipping a jeweled spear into the sea as they stood on the Floating Bridge of Heaven. Nichiren adored Tensho Daijin together with Hachiman Daibosatsu, the Great Bodhisattva Hachiman. Commonly known, he is the god of war and a guardian of samurai warriors. Nichiren considered Tensho Daijin and Hachiman Daibosatsu as the protectors of practitioners of the Lotus Sutra.

    The Career of Bodhisatta Metteyya
Namo Tassa Bhagavato Arahatto Sammasambuddhassa The Bodhisatta will be the son of the Wheel-turning Monarch's head priest, Subrahma, and his wife, Brahmavati.[88] He will be named Ajita, and he will bear the thirty-two marks and eighty minor marks that are common to Buddhas and Wheel-turning Monarchs.[89] He will lead the household life for eight thousand years. He will have four palaces named:[90] Sirivaddha, Vaddhamana, Siddhattha, and Candaka. He will have 100,000 dancing girls.[91] His wife will be Candamukhi[92] and his son will be named Brahmavaddhana. Bodhisattas decide to give up household life after they have seen the four signs (an old man, a sick man, a dead man, and a contented man who has gone forth from lay life) and after a son is born to them. They put on the yellow robe and engage in striving. The Bodhisatta Metteyya will go forth in one of his palaces. Accompanied by his followers, he will fly through the air in the palace and go to the Naga tree, which will be his Bodhi tree. He will engage in striving for seven days, which is the minimum period. There is a detailed account of these events in the Dasabodhisattauddesa:[93] At the age of eight thousand years, the Bodhisatta will mount a chariot that resembles a glorious celestial palace and when going to the royal park, he will see the four signs. They will produce the knowledge of a sense of urgency. And he will long for the state of going forth. Then he will return and go up to his palace. His mind will be bent on the state of going forth. At that moment, that jewel palace will fly up by a path in the sky, and he will leap up into the sky, like the king of the golden water fowl, together with his followers.

CONTROVERSY
A Saint's Self-Willed Death
Rationalists call aged and afflicted swami's fast to death "publicity stunt"
By Choodie Shivaram, Bangalore Dear friends," began Swami Nirmalananda's short missive of December 23, 1996, "It is with tearful feelings that I bid you farewell. My so-called end is really endless, as there is no end and beginning for life." Similar letters sent worldwide to 8,000 friendshe called no one his "disciple"calmly announced the 73-year-old swami's intent to undergo prayopavesha, self-willed death by fasting. Also called mahaprasthana , "the great departure," scriptures allow the practice for a terminally-ill ascetic. "My body has become weak," he explained to Swami Brahmadeva, his designated successor as head of Viswa Shanti Nikethana ashram. "I do not want to be a burden and die in roga (disease), I want to die in yoga . I have discharged all my duties and lived a full life. Now time has come for me to leave." He planned to accomplish this on January 15, 1997, the auspicious first day of Uttarayana Punyakala in the Hindu calendar. Swami's intent had been known for some time, and the local authorities had even posted police at the ashram located in the Balliligiri Rangana Hills ("BR Hills," 250 km from Bangalore) to prevent what they regarded as an unlawful act of suicide. The police were withdrawn on December 18, and from that day Swami gave up his normal austere diet of hand-pounded wheat bread and jungle greens to take only water. By January 1 he was taking one glass daily. On the 7th, he stopped even that, intending to attain Mahasamadhi on the 15th.

Free Verses on Praising All the Devas
Written in Chinese by the Buddhist Yogi C. M. Chen
Under the guidance of the author,
translated by Yutang Lin
Forward
Yogi Chen composed the first version of this hymn in Chinese for Buddhist practitioners in 1953 during his 25-year retreat in India. In 1983 he gave the second version in Chinese for monasteries. The second version differs from the first one in only six lines. Hence, we shall present our translation of the first version with each one of the six lines followed by that of the second version enclosed in brackets. Yogi Chen himself translated the first version into English years ago and presented it to his readers as booklet 59 "A Praising to All the Gods." His translation was rhymed. The present translation tries to be literal, and hence not rhymed. We hope that with two translations the readers would appreciate more our gratitudes to the Dharma Protector Gods. Yutang Lin
