Metteya Buddha Introduction Glossary Bibliography M etteya is the much awaited Future Buddha, who is yet to be born. He will then be reckoned as the twenty-fifth Buddha according to the Pali tradition. Furthermore, He would be counted as the fifth and the last of the Buddhas of the current aeon, i.e., the Bhadda Kappa. It is believed that he would be born when the human life will extend to eighty-four thousand years. The place of his birth would be Ketumati in the reign of Chakkavatti Samkha, who himself shall become a follower of the Buddha and renounce the worldly life. Maitreya (Metteya) Thanka no. 3 Collection: Spituk Monastery (Courtesy: Sakyamuni: An Exhibition of Rare Thankas Central Institute of Buddhist Studies Choglamsar Leh; p.25) Metteya would be born in an eminent erudite family and his name would be Ajita. The name of his gotta (clan) would also be Metteya. The name of his father would be Subrahma; and of the mother Brahmavati. He would be married to Chandamukhi and will have Brahmavaddhana as his son. He will live in four palaces for eight thousand years, which shall be called Sirivaddha, vaddhamana, Siddhattha and Chandaka. He would then renounce the world after seeing the four signs. Among his most noteworthy followers would be his two brothers Isidatta and Purana; and Jatimitta, Vijaya among the men; and Suddhana and Sanghaa and Visakhaa among the women.

Legends Kartikeya Kartikeya honored all the gods who helped in the elimination of the Rakshasas. He also released all the gods who had been imprisoned by Shurapadma. Whatever treasure had been looted and brought from different places, was all sent back to those places. With the help of the divine engineer Vishwakarma was rebuilt all the buildings, gardens and cities destroyed and burnt by the Rakshasas. Kartikeya seated Indra safely on the throne of Heaven. He also saw to it that everyone lived in peace and happiness, following the path of virtue. Shiva praised the valor of Kumara.
KARTIKEYA BEING WORSHIPPED BY GODS
Kartikeya's knowledge was immense even more than Shiva and Brahma. A little incident is often narrated in this regard.
Once in Kailasa Lord Shiva was in the divine assembly. All his angelic devotees had gathered there. There was divine music and the sound of musical instruments along with singing. Bhringi was dancing. Brahma, Indra and many others were all there. Kartikeya stood in front of Shiva. Shiva merely raised his eyebrows to stop the dance, looked at Kumara once and then at Brahma. The latter stood up. Everyone was looking at him. Brahma said, "O lord, you asked me to start the education of your son. And I accordingly in the early hours of the dawn tried to teach him the sacred 'Omkara'. All at once he held my hand and asked, 'what is the meaning of Om?' Even before learning to write, you should not ask for the meaning," I said.

Toji-Temple(Kyo-o-gokokuji Temple).
In the 13th year of Enryaku (794) the Emperor Kam-mu transferred the capital of this country from Nara to Kyoto and he built, after the model of Changan , the then capital of China , two huge guardian temples on the east and the west side of the Rajyo-mon which was the south gateway to Kyoto . They are Toji -Temple(East Temple) and Saiji -Temple(West Temple).
About thirty years later the Emperor Sag a honoured Kukai (774-835; founder of Shingon Buddhism ) with Toji Temple and gave it the official name Kyo-o-gokokuji , which means the temple that guards the capital and the land by virtue of Ninno-gokoku-kyo (the main sutra of the Shingon sect). Kukai made Toji the central seminary of Esoteric Buddhism and added various other buildings to it. It retains its original layout and architectural style and is known as a treasure house of Esoteric Buddhist art, due to its large number of cultural assets brought back from China such as old Buddhist statues, carvings, magnificent paintings, artistic handicrafts, etc.

The Jewel in the Lotus
GURU BHAKTI Guru Bhakti, devotion to the preceptor, is at the root of all good fortune, because it enables a man overladen with troubles to attain Brahman. As the Ganges carries all its water into the ocean, as the Vedas seek to discourse on the attainment of Brahman, or as a devoted wife dedicates to her husband her body and soul, so it is that the man of wisdom gives everything that belongs to him to his preceptor. He makes his body the abode of devotion to the Guru. His mind always turns to the place where the house of the Guru is located in the same manner as a woman thinks of her absent lover. He goes and bows even to the wind blowing from that direction. He tries to speak of everything which is located in that direction. He establishes his very life in the abode of the Guru. It is only by the command of the Guru that he continues to keep his body in his native place. Just as the calf, when tied by the halter, continues to think of the mother cow, so his soul is a willing slave at the threshold of the dwelling-place of the Guru. He is constantly asking himself when he would be freed from restriction and would meet the preceptor. Each second appears to him like an age....
The mention of the name of the Guru in his own house exalts him and in his joy he embraces everything around him. If you see such devotion towards the Guru and his house in anyone, know that wisdom -

Shree Mangesh Temple, Goa I
F Goa has been given the epithet of the "Rome of the East" because of its imposing churches, old Goa is also known for its temples, especially Shantadurga and Mangeesh in the Ponda district of North Goa. Many of the Hindus who left Goa during the Portuguese Inquisition and now live in neighbouring states are known to return to these family deities at least once a year. But if the Portuguese imposed religion on its subjects and put up crosses and chapels in every nook and cranny, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is doing the same with its temples varying in size and stature. It is the commercialisation and politicisation of religion which has gone on for centuries. But religion apart, these temples have a historic importance and one has to experience the solace and calm that comes from visiting these holy places (temples or churches). There is an aura of peace and solitude and is probably the reason why tourists flock to these sites.

NEW AGE CHILDREN
Arwinder (bare-bodied) with siblings and friend. From left-right: Kash, Lalita, Shahwin, Arwinder and Navinder.
The Divine Unity Arwinder has always maintained that he had on many occasions meditated with the Messengers of God, in addition to the Devi.
On September 4, 1996, at 6:20 p.m. he was questioned again about the Spirit Beings who meditated with Shri Bhagavati to find out whom out of the 34 he meditated with on a regular basis he could identify by certain distinguishing features. He immediately singled out Shri Ganesha. His elephant head and human body were distinct, and was clearly Arwinder's favorite friend!
He also picked out Shri Krishna by His distinctive skin color. Arwinder explained that he remembered clearly that one of them was blue in color, but did not know His name.
The rest had no unique distinguishing features and thus could not be singled out. Half an hour later he picked out Shri Siva. This happened when, while browsing through the book Childcraft: The How and Why Library About Animals , Vol. 5, (World Book, Inc., a Scott Fetzer Co., 1986), he saw a cobra on page 27. Immediately he recalled that one of them had a similar-looking snake around His neck. He was told that it was Shri Shiva. Arwinder then added that Shri Siva also had a swastika on His left palm. The father inquired how did he find that out.

Magazine Published on Sundays Features: Magazine Literary Review Life Metro Plus ... Magazine A mystic journey In the heart of the jungles of northern Kerala lies the Tirunelli Perumal temple. It is, says REMA DEVI R. TONDAIMAN, a sanctuary familiar to Keralites, but little known to the commercial world.
The incomplete vilakkumaadam of the temple Right in the dense forests of Wayanad, Kerala, as a branch of the Sahyadri ranges bordering Karnataka, is the Brahmagiri hill. Tirunelli rests at the base of this hill, which is in the upper and northern part of Wayanad. Driving from Kozhikode on a road that crosses stretches of swaying palms and majestic teak, one comes across a well-kept herb garden on the outskirts of Kalpetta, the district headquarters of Wayanad. Here, Gandhigramam shops offer handicrafts, spices, essential oils, and tea and coffee. There are excellent resorts for the weary traveller along this route. The most thrilling part of the journey is when the tea, coffee and rubber estates give way to dense forest and one recedes further and further away from civilisation deep into the unspoilt heart of nature. Historic and archaeological information about the temple is meagre. It is hoped that archaeologists and Indologists will be motivated enough to investigate further locally available information. Copper plate inscriptions of the period of Bhaskara Ravi Varma I and II have been discovered here. It is thought that this was an important flourishing township and pilgrimage centre till the 16th Century. There are references to a

AN INTRODUCTION TO EASTERN RELIGIONS AND THE LAND OF EASTERN RELEGIONS - BIHAR
There exists a land on both sides of the river Ganges in India which occupies the same place for people believing in Eastern Religions as does Jerusalem and the neighbouring areas for the people belonging to Christianity, Islam and Judaism. Great philosophers, sages, kings, and the knowers of Truth lived here. The word `Bihar' is a distortion of the word `Vihar' from Sanskrit, which means, ( a ) wander, and ( b ) a Buddhist monastery. Both these meanings are appropriate because ( a ) Lord Mahavira and many other Jain Tirthankars, and also Lord Buddha, wandered around in this land, and ( b ) It had numerous Buddhist monasteries and was the Centre of Buddhism . The messages these people left for the rest of the world took forms of different Eastern Religions called Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. The scriptures that millions and millions of people read contain the same Truth but, because of the various limitations of different people, the same Truth appears differently to them. This land is called Bihar which is one of the states of India. Hinduism as it is known these days, was known as the Sanatana Dharma which actually means that this religion has always existed
