Boyle, Robert
Irish chemist and physicist who published the seminal The Sceptical Chymist 1661. He formulated Boyle's law 1662. He was a pioneer in the use of experiment and scientific method.
Boyle questioned the alchemical basis of the chemical theory of his day and taught that the proper object of chemistry was to determine the compositions of substances. The term 'analysis' was coined by Boyle and many of the reactions still used in qualitative work were known to him. He introduced certain plant extracts, notably litmus, for the indication of acids and bases. He was also the first chemist to collect a sample of gas.
Boyle was born in Lismore, County Waterford. He lived in Oxford, England, 1654-68, and subsequently in London. As a student he joined a group whose aim was to cultivate the 'new philosophy'; this became the Royal Society 1662.
He learned Hebrew, Greek, and Syriac to further his studies of the Bible, and endowed the Boyle Lectures for the defence of Christianity.
Boyle pointed out that bodies alter in weight according to the varying buoyancy of the atmosphere. These findings were published in The Spring of Air 1660.

Boyle, Robert Boyle, Robert, gas laws ). Boyle is often referred to as the father of modern chemistry; he separated chemistry from alchemy and gave the first precise definitions of a chemical element, a chemical reaction, and chemical analysis. He also made studies of the calcination of metals, combustion, acids and bases, the nature of colors, and the propagation of sound. Although he was especially noted for his experimental work, Boyle also contributed to physical theory, supporting an early form of the atomic theory of matter, which he called the corpuscular philosophy, and using it to explain many of his experimental results. His extensive writings contributed greatly to the dominance of the mechanistic theory following Newton's work. Boyle was one of the group at Oxford that later became the Royal Society, but he refused the presidency of the society in 1680, as well as many other honors. The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia

    ROBERT BOYLE
BOYLE, ROBERT In person Boyle was tall, slender and of a pale countenance. His constitution was far from robust, and throughout his life he suffered from feeble health and low spirits. While his scientific work procured him an extraordinary reputation among his contemporaries, his private character and virtues, the charm of his social manners, his wit and powers of conversation, endeared him to a large circle of personal friends. He was never married. His writings are exceedingly voluminous, and his style is clear and straightforward, though undeniably prolix. BOYLE BOYNE
