There was a Prudence Parks who died in Almond 1849. Her husband was Joseph Corey. Perhaps Joseph and Rufus Corey are related. Joseph Alvin Corey was born in PA about 1770, died in Almond in 1818. Joseph was from the Wyoming Valley of Pennsylvania and his father may have been named Jenckes Corey. Joseph may have lived in Canisteo in 1810. Rufus may have lived in Alfred in 1820. In 1820 there was a Thomas G Corey in Reading, Steuben Co. Hope this helps.

Match Report vs Charlton 6 December 1997 (League Division One)
READING 2 Charlton
Att: 8,000 Team: Hammond, Booty, Swales, Lambert (Lovell), McPherson, Primus, Parkinson, Hodges (Caskey), Asaba, Morley, Williams.
Sub (not used): Thorp. Goal Scorers: Hodges, Morley(penalty). Report from the Evening Post by Clive Baskerville LEE HODGES was just nine minutes into his first start for two months when he scored the goal that set Reading on their way to a hard-earned three points against high-flying Charlton Athletic. The former Spurs and Barnet midfielder found the target with a well-struck left-foot drive from the edge of the box - just as he did at Portsmouth before suffering the knee injury that kept him sidelined for six weeks. Hodges, 24, has shown a keen eye for the net since joining Royals in the summer for £100,000 and there was no doubting the value of his latest strike. He told me: "I got a great connection on the ball and the bottom corner was the only place the ball was going to go. Every goal I score is a delight for me, but that was was a bit special because of the period I had been out." The win, only the second time Royals have won twice in a row in the Nationwide League, Division 1 this season, was sealed when Trevor Morley sidefooted in his 12th consecutive goal as a result of a penalty kick. And it helped push Reading up to 16th spot - their highest place this term. Reading still had to endure strong second-half pressure from Addicks, but the defence held firm with left-back Steve Swales particularly impressive, twice clearing off the line to deny Shaun Newton in the closing stages. Hodges, who had shaken off a knee injury to play, was brought back in after four games as substitute because Ray Houghton failed a fitness test on a calf strain. His inclusion gave manager Terry Bullivant the opportunity to bring Stuart Lovell into the squad for the first time this season after an operation to repair damaged knee ligaments in May.

    More about Rufus
In the early 1820's, his maternal ancestors were the first settlers in the Little Tennessee Valley of North Carolina, in the shadows of the Nantahala Mountains. The were Silers. The name lives on Silers Bald, in the Great Smokies, and on another Silers Bald, in the Nantahalas.
Dr. Morgan was an Episcopal priest, a hiker, a constant worker for the betterment of the lives of the North Carolina mountain people. One of his first church duties was to accept and distribute give-away clothing sent from afar to poor mountain people. He disliked seeing them losing their dignity and independence by accepting handouts.
He also founded a country school at Penland, NC. His sister, Lucy, later joined him in it and established a craft department. That craft school still lives and has grown famous. Rufus and Lucy also helped found the Southern Highland Handicraft Guild. Because of the school and guild, many mountain people earn a living making craft articles.

    painting by
    Marjorie Neville Weatherly Ostborg '78
"I remember hearing stories about cuzin Rufus Morgan at the Siler (pronounced 'Sila' by my North Carolina kinfolk) family reunion every summer in Franklin, NC.
I never really paid much attention to what the grown-ups would say...too busy hunting down mica rocks... but what I do remember is that when I heard someone speak of Rufus...I somehow just knew...that he was a special man.
When my son was born, my mom gave him a beautiful portrait of the 'preacher man' painted by cuzin Margorie. The inscription read: Dr. A. Rufus Morgan 'The Modern Moses.' I've also heard him referred to as 'The Mountain Moses'.
I used to stare at his portrait and think about his life and all those beautiful lines in his face. I'd wonder about his walking cane and all the wonderful places it must've gone. One day after watching a PBS documentary that captured Rufus making his annual birthday hike up Mounte LeConte at the young age of 92...I just became immersed in trying to capture a bit of his appalachian spirit to share through my music. A rockin' little song was born that is just my way of trying to pass on his message."

Her playing is fresh and original, her compositions eclectic and her quartet, with saxophonist Jason Gillenwater, bassist Fraser Hollins and drummer Jeff Davis, displays a musical empathy far too rare in jazz these days. As guitarist Wayne Krantz said, "Considering her warm appeal as a musician, jazz guitar is lucky to have Amanda Monaco."
