    Georgetown’s very first Caestecker chair of the Music Program in Performing Arts failed his music aptitude test. The Seashore Aptitude test was a two-part exam that sought to determine whether or not young children were musically inclined. José Bowen failed both parts. He was eight years old, and apparently without a future in music. “So my mother put me in recorder class with the rest of the rejects,” Bowen says. From there, he went on to play “basically anything I could get my hands on.” When he headed the jazz program at Stanford University years later, he had the opportunity to meet test-developer Carl Seashore. “By then, the test had been discontinued,” he adds with a smile. Meet Professor José Bowen. He’s played with Liberace and jammed with Stan Getz and Dizzy Gillespie. His music has been performed on both coasts and everywhere in between — Omaha, Louisiana and Michigan, to name just a few. He has degrees in chemistry, art history, the humanities and, of course, in music (in both composition and musicology). One of his books, Conducting, was just released in November, and he has contracts on a few more. He has a family. And by day, he does what he loves: teaches and performs. This man is not a failure.

    Every witness to the Gaspee affair who mentioned names included the name "Greene".
    The Greene family were owners of the Fortune, seized by Dudingston, and had a strong grievance against him. Among the goods seized (as smuggled goods) was some rum. During the period of the Gaspee raid the Greenes were in the process of bringing a law suit against Dudingston for damages for their lost rum. The initial part of this process was political and investigative. That is, the Greenes and others asked the Rhode Island government to discover the authority of the person commanding the Gaspee. After the Gaspee raid, that suit was successfully concluded with a jury verdict adjudging improper seizure and damages assessed against Dudingston. The Gaspee sailors told of one man (during the events of the capture of the Gaspee) harassing Dudingston about payment for rum. Thus the mention by participants of "Greene" fits with the logic of the situation. We do not know positively whether the Greene on board the Gaspee was: Nathaniel, the owner of the rum;

    RHODE ISLAND MEN WHO ATTACKED THE GASPEE.
    In the at least eight long boats of Rhode Island men that attacked the Gaspee, there were at least 64 men, and probably more than 90 . Most historians list only about 20 of the raiders (the list names vary). Most historians start with the written accounts by Gaspee raiders Ephraim Bowen and John Mawney, and add names from the account of John Howland (see note at end of this page re Howland) to form a short list of the attack party, but other Rhode Island men can be identified. Our list has over 30 probable participants in the Gaspee raiding party.
    List of 30 probable participants in the Gaspee raiding party.
    We have biographical information on most of the Rhode Island men on our list. In addition we have information on other persons who were involved in one way or another, on the American or English side, in the attack or its aftermath. Here is a half-dozen sampling of the persons on our list of raiders.

    Rufus and Anna Abbott
    were among the earliest converts to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, joining the faith in 1830 in the State of New York. Soon after joining with the Church, the Abbott family was among the earliest settlers in the "Mormon" communities in Jackson County, Missouri. The Abbott family was soon forced from the area. Following their expulsion, their son Hiram Abbott settled on Shoal Creek at Jacob Haun's Mill. Hiram was severely wounded during the attack on Haun's Mill and died 5 weeks later. After the Extermination Order of Missouri Governor Lilburn Boggs in 1839, the Abbott's left with the other LDS faithful, and eventually found refuge in Beautiful Nauvoo . Rufus and Anna purchased land in the 3rd Ward where they began to reestablish themselves in a new place. Scrimping and saving, they eventually had enough money to build their home here. Rufus put the best materials into their beautiful new brick home. The staircase, a symbol of one's wealth, was noted as one of the finest in
