Salem Tales NATHANIEL BOWDITCH
SCIENTIST Nathaniel Bowditch was born in Salem in 1773, the fourth of seven children. His childhood as we know it was short-lived: at the age of ten he was taken out of school to work in his father's cooperage. Two years later he was apprenticed to a local ship chandler.
Nathaniel Bowditch was born here in Salem in 1773 The young teen spent his evenings teaching himself Latin and Greek and studying mathematics, science and astronomy. When his apprenticeship ended, Bowditch shipped out in 1795 on the first of five voyages to the East Indies. While at sea he spent his free time poring over the navigational tables prepared by John Hamilton Moore of England. Bowditch found and corrected over 8,000 errors. The corrected tables were included in Bowditch's The New American Practical Navigator published in both England and America in 1802. The 594 page volume also included information on navigational law, measurement, and terminology. The book was easily understood by sailors with limited education. It became, along with "a Bible, a chest of clothes and mother's blessing", an essential part of every seaman's gear.

Carry On, Mr. Bowditch by Jean Lee Latham ISBN: 0395068819 (hardcover)
ISBN: 0395137136 (softcover) We read this book aloud last year. It's a good bookone that I think many homeschoolers would like. We meet Nathaniel Bowditch when he's just 6 years old right before his family was moving back to Salem, Massachusetts. We follow his life through his early years at school, his 9-year indenture to a shipping supplier which started at the age of 12, his trips to the Mediterranean and the Philippines, and his marriage. So much happened to Nathaniel Bowditch. Much of the events are true, but this is a "fictionalized" biography. One thing I like about this book is that it gave us a good excuse to study geography a little. We followed Nathaniel's trips in our atlas and on our maps. We do this with many books that we read; it's an easy way to learn geography. One thing we love is our little laser pointer. With the laser pointer, we can stay seated on the couch and still point to the locations on the map. (Yes, we have a map in the living room. We even have a timeline or two in the dining room. I really think that having a picture of the world up in view all the time really helps kids to have a good picture of the world in their mind when they're older.) The reason that I think that this is a great homeschooling readaloud is that Nathaniel Bowditch took responsibility for his own education. He had to leave school at the age of 12 to fulfill his indenture. That effectively ended his formal education, though he still dreamed of attending Harvard. He learned about navigation from a gentleman named Sam. He then went on to learn surveying and mathematics. Authoring an almanac followed that! Around the time he turned 16, he was lent Sir Isaac Newton's

NATHANIAL BOWDITCH, AMERICA'S NATIVE SON... "The history of the Salem...the history of maritime science...the history of education...the history of mathematics and finance...the history of modern capital development. None can be told completely without the history of Nathaniel Bowditch. If Nathaniel Bowditch can be described as a "contribution" from the City of Salem, this is indeed a contribution of global proportions, and a source of great pride for Salem." Salem's Stellar Scientist, Nathaniel Bowditch, An Appreciation. Mildred Berman Home Links to Standards Visit Ocean Institute Equipment ... Printable Files Program Background Printable Version In 1773, Nathaniel Bowditch was born in Salem to a family of seafarers. Because of poor economic conditions, Bowditch was apprenticed to a chandlery, which was a supply store for ships. Between the ages of twelve and twenty, Bowditch kept busy after work hours exploring the volumes in Salem's Philosophical Library. Always restless, Nathaniel also copied all the mathematical papers he found in the Transactions of the Royal Society of London. He taught himself Latin and French to better understand the philosophical works he was interested in reading. Just after the close of the Revolutionary War, Bowditch was released from his indentured servitude. He went to sea as a clerk in 1795, and became the first officer to train the common sailors the arts of math, reading and navigation, coining the phrase: "It's a simple matter of mathematics..." Learning the economics of trade, Bowditch later shipped out as the captain and owner of the Putnam.

It's the revolution. Your father is a sea captain whose ship has gone down in a storm. His solution to keeping you fed is to indenture you to some ship suppliers' warehouse. Your "life" at age 12 is becalmed until you are 21. Nat doesn't stay becalmed long. He studies math, Latin, corrects almanac charts and gets himself educated enough to become second mate in charge of his own duty. In this year when everyone is talking of the stars, this is a neat book to get into because of Nat's fascination with the stars. SUBJECTS: Bowditch, Nathaniel, 1773-1838 Fiction

Bowditch, Nathaniel (26 Mar. 1773-16 Mar. 1838) , astronomer and mathematician, was born in Salem, Massachusetts, the son of Habakkuk Bowditch, a shipmaster and cooper, and Mary Ingersoll. His family moved to Danvers, Massachusetts, while he was still an infant but returned to Salem when Bowditch was seven. Business reverses forced his family into poverty, and Bowditch's formal education ended at age ten, when he entered his father's cooperage shop. In 1785 he became an apprentice clerk in the ship-chandlery shop of Hodges and Ropes in Salem; five years later he moved to the shop of Samuel C. Ward. Between January 1795 and December 1803, Bowditch made five voyages on merchant ships, including four to the East Indies and one to Europe, serving on the last voyage as master and part owner. In March 1798, between voyages, he married Elizabeth Boardman, who died seven months later. He married Mary Ingersoll, a cousin, in 1800; they had eight children. Bowditch began his self-education during his apprenticeship years. He began the study of algebra in 1787, calculus two years later, and Latin by 1790. He took up the latter two subjects in order to understand Isaac Newton's Principia . In June 1791 the resources of the Salem Philosophical Library were made available to him, including various science texts and the
