This talking book comes with an interactive ''magic pen'' that works like a hand-held computer mouse pointer. Children can opt to turn the paper pages and listen to the story read with different voices for each character. Or they can interrupt the read-aloud session to play with the magic pen (permanently attached with a wire). They can point the pen tip to any word on a page and hear it pronounced, or touch a picture and hear a sound effect (such as ''Strike one!'' for the baseball bat). Very similar to the popular Living Books computer games, this 10-by-11-inch book is more portable than a home computer. Stories in this set include Lil's Loose Tooth, Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever, and Winnie the Pooh in A Sweet Good Morning. The set also includes a paper piano keyboard and map and human anatomy games. Gail Hudson

Nathaniel Bowditch 's father was Habakkuk Bowditch who was a cooper, that is a maker and repairer of wooden casks. His mother was Mary Ingersoll. Although Nathaniel was born in Salem, Massachusetts, his family moved to Danvers, also in Massachusetts, while he was still a baby. After a few years, when Nathaniel was seven years old, they returned to Salem. As Albree writes in [8]:- The first years of Bowditch's life revolved around Salem, Massachusetts, a compact seafaring town along the picturesque north shore, miles north of Boston. This was a hard time for the Bowditch family. Habakkuk Bowditch's business collapsed and the family hit really hard times financially. Although Nathaniel went to school until he was ten years old, his formal education had to end at that point and he began working in his father's cooperage shop. After two years of helping his father, Nathaniel became an apprentice clerk in the ship's chandler shop of Hodges and Ropes in Salem in 1785. This shop dealt in provisions and supplies for ships. In 1790 Bowditch, aged seventeen by this time, changed his employers and began working for the shop of Samuel C Ward. Although Bowditch was working as a clerk, he was educating himself throughout this period. Reingold writes in [1]:-

He learnt Latin to study Newton 's Principia and later other languages to study mathematics in these languages. Between 1795 and 1799 he made 4 sea voyages and in 1802 he was in command of a merchant ship. His New American Practical Navigator (1802) and his translation of Laplace 's gave him an international reputation. Bowditch was helped by Peirce in this project and his commentaries doubled the length of the book. He studied Lissajous figures in 1815 while studying the motion of a pendulum suspended from 2 points. Bowditch refused chairs of mathematics at several universities preferring his post as president of the Essex Fire and Marine Insurance Company from 1804 to 1823, working as an actuary from 1823 in the Massachusetts Hospital Life Insurance Company. THE BOWDITCH HOUSE
The ongoing story of the restoration and use of this house
will be told on these pages.
Early Image of the Bowditch House on Essex Street History
Built on Essex Street in or around 1805, the Nathaniel Bowditch House is a National Historic Landmark , and is significant both architecturally and historically. It is listed individually in the National Register of Historic Places , and is located at the junction of Salem's famed McIntire Historic District and the City's downtown area. It was the home of Nathaniel Bowditch from 1811 to 1823, but its significance goes further. Bowditch purchased the House from the Curwen family, famous for their part in the Salem Witch Trials. Owners after Bowditch included the Massachusetts General Hospital, and Joseph B.F. Osgood, a Salem lawyer and judge, who while living in the House, served as Mayor during the Civil War. During the early to mid-twentieth century, the House was owned and occupied by a series of doctors, including Dr. Kate C. Mudge, one of Salem's first female doctors. Essex Street was not widened in 1940s. Curwen Lane, or North Street , however, was. The Bowditch House had to be moved to 9 North to provide adequate clear land on Essex for the Witch House to be moved west to escape the new traffic lanes of the widened North Street. In 1946, a group of citizens came together, formed Historic Salem, Incorporated, and raised funds to purchase the buildings. They moved the Bowditch House around the corner to its present location.

Salem Tales NATHANIEL BOWDITCH
SCIENTIST Nathaniel Bowditch was born in Salem in 1773, the fourth of seven children. His childhood as we know it was short-lived: at the age of ten he was taken out of school to work in his father's cooperage. Two years later he was apprenticed to a local ship chandler.
Nathaniel Bowditch was born here in Salem in 1773 The young teen spent his evenings teaching himself Latin and Greek and studying mathematics, science and astronomy. When his apprenticeship ended, Bowditch shipped out in 1795 on the first of five voyages to the East Indies. While at sea he spent his free time poring over the navigational tables prepared by John Hamilton Moore of England. Bowditch found and corrected over 8,000 errors. The corrected tables were included in Bowditch's The New American Practical Navigator published in both England and America in 1802. The 594 page volume also included information on navigational law, measurement, and terminology. The book was easily understood by sailors with limited education. It became, along with "a Bible, a chest of clothes and mother's blessing", an essential part of every seaman's gear.
