Satyendranath Bose 's mother, Amodini Devi, had received little formal education but she skilfully brought up her large family of seven children. Bose's father was Surendranath Bose who worked for a while as an accountant before joining the East Indian Railways. He later set up his own chemical and pharmaceutical company. Satyendranath was the eldest of Amodini and Surendranath's seven children, having six younger sisters. Satyendranath began his education at an elementary school in Calcutta before entering the Hindu School in 1907. It was here that his interest in mathematics and science began, and as is so often the case, it was due to an outstanding mathematics teacher coupled with encouragement from the headmaster. He began his studies at Presidency College, Calcutta, in 1909 where he had a brilliant academic record. He was awarded a B.Sc. in 1913 and an M.Sc. in 1915 proving himself to be by far the best student of mathematics. In the year he was awarded his Master's degree, Bose married Ushabala Ghosh. They had five children, three daughters and two sons. Had Indians been allowed to take administrative posts in the government service, Bose would almost certainly have followed that route. As it was, he continued to study physics and mathematics and was appointed to the newly opened University College of Science in Calcutta in 1917. This university was a research institution for postgraduate studies and here Bose was able to study recent European texts on

Born 1894, Calcutta, India. Master's in Mixed Mathematics, Calcutta University, 1915, then in new physics department. Lecturer in Physics, 1917-21. Reader in Physics, Dacca University1921-26. Spent 1924-26 in Europe (Paris with Marie Curie, visited Einstein in Berlin). Professor of Physics, later Dean of the Faculty of Science, Dacca University, 1926-45. Professor of Physics and Dean, Khaira University, 1945. Head of Indian Physical Society. Elected Fellow of the Royal Society of London, 1958. Derived with Saha the Saha-Bose equation of state for a nonideal gas, 1918. 1920 derived Rydberg law in the old quantum theory. 1924 derived Planck's radiation law using a photon rather than matter oscillator picture, introduced Bose statistics to account for photon identity (Bose statistics extended to gases by Einstein). Later work on total reflection by the ionosphere (1938), the Lorentz group (1939), experimental work on crystallography, fluorescence, thermoluminescence, theoretical work on general relativity.

This entry contributed by Michel Barran Indian physicist, educated at Presidency College in Calcutta. He was lecturer at the Calcutta University College of Science from 1917 to 1921 then became a reader in physics at the University of Dacca. His work ranged over statistical mechanics, the electromagnetic properties of ionosphere, theories of X-ray crystallography and unified field theory. His work in quantum statistics is the best known. Einstein's generalization of this work led to the so-called Bose-Einstein statistics for particles of integral spin (now called "bosons," a word coined by P. A. M. Dirac

SCIENTIST Satyendra Nath Bose Some students love mathematics. What are the maximum marks they score in it ? It would be a hundred per cent. We would be surprised to be told that some students have secured more than a hundred per cent, wouldn't we! One such student was Satyendranath Bose. As a student of the fourth standard he set up a new record by scoring 110 marks out of 100. This bright youngster later became a scientist and won worldwide fame. Once the great scientist, Niels Bohr, was delivering a lecture. Bose presided. At one stage the lecturer had some difficulty in explaining a point. He had been writing on the blackboard; he stopped and, turning to Bose, said, "Can Professor Bose help me?" All the while Satyendranath had been sitting with his eyes shut. The audience could not help smiling at Professor Bohr's words. But to their great surprise, Bose opened his eyes; in an instant he solved the lecturer's difficulty. Then he sat down and once again closed his eyes!

SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, INNOVATION: THEIR IMPACT ON ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL POWER Bose Einstein Lecture By Dr. R.A. Mashelkar, F.R.S. Director General Council of Scientific and Industrial Research New Delhi December 13, 1999 India International Centre New Delhi INTRODUCTION It is a matter of great honor and a privilege for me to deliver this lecture named after two of the greatest scientists of this century, namely Albert Einstein and Satyendranath Bose. I am particularly beholden, because on one hand, I have an opportunity to pay my tributes to these great scientists, who also represent a unique intellectual bond between these two great nations, as partly reflected by a relationship between these two giants of this century. On the other hand, I feel humble when I note the list of distinguished speakers, who have preceded me. I am deeply conscious of the fact that I cannot match their intellect, authority and eminence. The Bose – Einstein intellectual bond was both imminent and durable. It is only apt that the first ever English translation of Einstein’s papers on relativity originally published in German, was made by Bose and his distinguished colleague Meghnad Saha and printed in Calcutta. The world ‘boson’ to describe elementary particles that obey the Bose-Einstein statistics is now a part of language. The recent Nobel prize winning work has put experimental seal on this inspired theoretical work. In my lecture today, I will give some of my perceptions on the way science, technology and innovation is going to determine the economic and political power of the nations. The rapid paradigm shifts that are taking place in the world as it moves from super power bipolarity to multipolarity, as industrial capitalism gives way to green capitalism and digital capitalism, as information technology creates netizens out of citizens, as aspirations of the poor get fuelled by the increasingly easier access to information, as the nations move from ‘independence’ to ‘interdependence’, as national boundaries become notional, and as the concept of global citizenship gets evolved, we will be full of new paradigms and new paradoxes, there is no doubt that the rapid advance of science and technology will directly fuel many of these.

PHONE: (713) 527-6087 RICE TEAM OBSERVES LIMITED ATOMS IN BOSE-EINSTEIN HOUSTON, February 11, 1997 - Of the three teams in the world that can coax the elusive Bose-Einstein condensation into existence, only the Rice University team can make it using atoms that attract each other. This provides a unique situation for studying the interactions of the atoms in this rare state of matter. For this reason, the Rice team is taking an especially close look at the mechanics of how their condensate forms and the special properties it possesses. Their findings contribute to a basic understanding of interactions on the atomic level. A Bose-Einstein condensate, independently postulated by Indian physicist Satyendranath Bose and Albert Einstein in the 1920s, is a rare state of matter in which the atoms are so cold and move so slowly that they undergo a phase transition, as when water freezes to ice. But in this phase transition, the atoms condense into a special gas which behaves as a single unit. This occurs at fractions of a degree above absolute zero, or minus 460 degrees Fahrenheit. In the Feb. 10 issue of Physical Review Letters, the Rice team, led by Randall Hulet, professor of physics, reports that when the condensate is formed with attractive atoms, specifically lithium, there is a ceiling to the number of atoms before the condensate maxes out and collapses.

Satyendranath Bose and Albert Einstein published a series of papers on the physics of particles with integer spins (bosons). The duo predicted that if a collection of bosonic atoms could be cooled to the point that each one reaches its lowest possible quantum mechanical energy, a Bose-Einstein condensate would result. In this state, atoms would lose their individual properties and would act collectively as a single entity
