Karol Borsuk 's father, Marian Borsuk, was a surgeon in Warsaw while his mother was Zofia Maciejewska. Karol attended school in Warsaw but with World War I beginning before Karol had begun secondary school, major changes occurred in Poland. In August 1915 the Russian forces which had held Poland for many years withdrew from Warsaw. Germany and Austria-Hungary took control of most of the country and the University of Warsaw was refounded and it began operating as a Polish university. Rapidly a strong school of mathematics grew up in the University of Warsaw, with topology being one of the main topics. This was begun by Janiszewski and Mazurkiewicz then carried further by Kuratowski and Sierpinski . When Borsuk entered the University of Warsaw to study mathematics it was an exciting centre for research in topology; Saks and Mazurkiewicz were both teaching at the University and making major advances in the topic.

These papers include personal and professional correspondence, manuscripts of both published and unpublished works, and memorabilia. Stanislaw Ulam Stanislaw Ulam was gifted mathematician who, during the course of his career, made significant contributions to set theory, topology, ergodic theory, probability, cellular automata theory, the study of nonlinear processes, the function of real variables, mathematical logic, and number theory. Perhaps his greatest achievement was the development of the Monte Carlo method for solving complex mathematical problems by electronic random sampling, but he made equally noteworthy contributions in hydrodynamics (three-dimensional fluid flow), the development of nuclear propulsion for space flight (Project Orion), and in fields as disparate as physics, biology, and astronomy. Yet despite the breadth of his scholarship, Ulam is most often remembered for the central role he played in the early development of the American hydrogen bomb.

Matematyk warszawski 20 lat temu zmar³ wybitny polski matematyk, Karol Borsuk, topolog i geometra.
Karol Borsuk urodzi³ siê 8 maja 1905 r. w Warszawie w rodzinie lekarskiej - jego ojciec, Marian, by³ chirurgiem. Matematykê studiowa³ na Uniwersytecie Warszawskim, tutaj te¿ siê doktoryzowa³. Matematyczny rozwój Borsuka przypad³ na okres rozkwitu Polskiej Szko³y Matematycznej. Jeszcze przed drug± wojn± ¶wiatow± zosta³ profesorem Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego. W Warszawie spêdzi³ okupacjê, uczestnicz±c w tajnym nauczaniu. Po wojnie powróci³ na macierzyst± uczelniê. Zmar³ 24 stycznia 1982 r. w Warszawie.
Karol Borsuk (1905-1982) Tak wspó³pracê z Borsukiem jeszcze w przedwojennym Lwowie wspomina³ Stanis³aw Ulam w swych "Przygodach matematyka" (wyd. pol. w przek³adzie Agnieszki Górnickiej, Prószyñski i S-ka, Warszawa 1996):
