Max Born was born into a Jewish family. His father, Gustav Born, was a distinguished medical professor of embryology at the University of Breslau. Max's mother, Margarete Kaufmann, came from a Breslau family who were in the textile industry. It was from his mother that Max inherited his love of music, but sadly she died when he was four years old. Gustav then appointed governesses to look after Max and his younger sister over the next four years until 1890 when he married again. The family provided a cultured and academic background for Max as he grew up but, although Max's new mother looked after the family well, neither Max nor his sister formed a particularly loving relationship with her. Gymnasium in Breslau, studying a wide range of subjects such as mathematics, physics, history, modern languages, Latin, Greek, and German. He showed little promise at school and in particular he showed more interest in the humanities than in the sciences. Entering the University of Breslau in 1901 he took a wide range of science subjects, mainly to go along with his father's wishes (his father had died shortly before Max left school). The list of courses he took in session 1901-02 was certainly impressive, including mathematics, astronomy, physics, chemistry, logic, philosophy, and zoology.

German-British physicist who worked on the mathematical basis for quantum mechanics Born's most important contribution was his suggestion that the absolute square of the wavefunction in the was a measure of the probability of finding the particle at a given location. Born shared the 1954 Nobel Prize in physics with Bothe

Born, Max
German-born British physicist who received a Nobel prize 1954 for fundamental work on the quantum theory, especially his 1926 discovery that the wave function of an electron is linked to the probability that the electron is to be found at any point.
With the rise to power of the Nazis, Born left Germany for the UK, and in 1936 he became professor of natural philosophy at Edinburgh. In 1953 he retired to Germany.
Encouraged by German chemist Fritz Haber to study the lattice energies of crystals, Born was at Frankfurt able to determine the energies involved in lattice formation, from which the properties of crystals may be derived, and thus laid one of the foundations of solid-state physics.
Born was inspired by Danish physicist Niels Bohr

  • Was Hitler human? John Cusack talks about his new movie, "Max," which is sparking a firestorm even before its opening. By David Talbot Was Hitler human? And if so, how did he become a monster? These are among the questions raised by a provocative new movie that, against all odds, is premiering Monday at the Toronto Film Festival. The film project, which became the obsession of three men director/writer Menno Meyjes, actor John Cusack and producer Andras Hamori scared off movie financiers throughout the Western world. Despite having one of the most popular actors of his generation as its star and a well-connected director and producer (the Dutch-born Meyjes wrote the screenplays for "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" and "The Color Purple" for Steven Spielberg and the Hungarian-born Hamori produced "Sunshine" and "The Sweet Hereafter"), the film deeply unnerved prospective investors from the U.S. to Canada to Germany and France.
