At the 1924 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM), it was decided that at each ICM, two gold medals should be awarded to recognize outstanding mathematical achievement. Professor J. C. Fields, a Canadian mathematician who was Secretary of the 1924 Congress, later donated funds establishing the medals which were named in his honor. Consistent with Fields's wish that the awards recognize both existing work and the promise of future achievement, it was agreed to restrict the medals to mathematicians not over forty at the year of the Congress. In 1966 it was agreed that, in light of the great expansion of mathematical research, up to four medals could be awarded at each Congress. It is largely recognized that the Fields Medal is equivalent to Nobel Prize if it were awarded to mathematicians. Enrico Bombieri Sergi Novikov Novikov obtained his first degree in 1960 and then became a research student at the Steklov Institute of Mathematics in Moscow. In 1960-61 he [5]:- ... studied the writings of Whitney, Pontryagin, Thom and Milnor, all of which are written with great clarity. The completeness of the proofs in these papers was achieved with no detriment to understanding and without any artificial formalisation.

FELLOWS Albrecht-Buehler, Guenter Northwestern University, USA Professor Albrecht-Buehler is an internationally renowned scientist who made outstanding contributions to various fields of cell and molecular biology. One of his discoveries is the ability of cells to locate weak signal sources next to strong ones as if they were able to 'see' different objects. Therefore, the described phenomenon was referred to rudimentary 'vision' of cells. Such a capacity of cells imply that their behavior is controlled by very complex data integration systems that are, so far, unknown to biology. Bacheca Cerca Dottorato di ricerca honoris causa in Matematica a Enrico Bombieri Università di Princeton Le motivazioni per il conferimento del Diploma di Dottorato in Matematica da parte dell’Ateneo a Enrico Bombieri risiedono non solo nella sua altissima figura di matematico, ma anche nei profondi rapporti professionali ed umani che Enrico Bombieri ha avuto e mantenuto con Pisa. La scuola matematica pisana deve moltissimo a Enrico Bombieri. Nel primo periodo pisano, la sua presenza, insieme a quella di Aldo Andreotti, Jacopo Barsotti, Ennio De Giorgi, Guido Stampacchia, Edoardo Vesentini, ha contribuito a rendere Pisa uno dei centri più importanti per la ricerca matematica in Italia e nel mondo. Chi ha avuto l’occasione di vivere quel periodo ricorda quegli anni e l’atmosfera dell’epoca come una delle esperienze intellettuali più profonde. Ma anche successivamente, quando Enrico Bombieri si è trasferito negli Stati Uniti, i legami con la scuola pisana, della quale, almeno per quel che riguarda la Teoria dei Numeri, è stato il fondatore, non si sono allentati, grazie anche alle sue frequenti visite a Pisa. Chi ricorda le lunghissime discussioni su qualunque problema gli venisse posto, ritrova, ad un nuovo incontro, la stessa disponibilità, lo stesso interesse di quando era a Pisa. E ritrova quel divertimento per la matematica, quell’impressionante lucidità di pensiero, quella enorme capacità di collegare problemi e di usare fino in fondo tecniche raffinatissime senza perdere mai di vista la profonda bellezza della matematica.

It is thought to have been written during the few months before his death. Notice that no mention is made about the age of the recipients (currently there is a 40 year-old limit), and that the medal should not be attached to any person, private or public, meaning that it shouldn't bear anybody's name. It is proposed to found two gold medals to be awarded at successive International Mathematical Congress for outstanding achievements in mathematics. Because of the multiplicity of the branches of mathematics and taking into account the fact that the interval between such congresses is four years it is felt that at least two medals should be available. The awards would be open to the whole world and would be made by an International Committee. The fund for the founding of the medals is constituted by balance left over after financing the Toronto congress held in 1924. This must be held in trust by the Government or by some body authorized by government to hold and invest such funds. It would seem that a dignified method for handling the matter and one which in this changing world should most nearly secure permanency would be for the Canadian Government to take over the fund and appoint as his custodian say the Prime Minister of the Dominion or the Prime Minister in association with the Minister of Finance. The medals would be struck at the Mint in Ottawa and the duty of the custodian would be simply to hand over the medals at the proper time to the accredited International Committee.
