A Guide to the William T. Reid Papers, 1925-1977
Descriptive Summary Creator: Reid, William T. (William Thomas), 1907 Oct. 4-1977 Title: William T. Reid Papers, Dates: Abstract: William T. Reid was professor of mathematics at Northwestern University (1944-59), University of Iowa (1959-64), and University of Oklahoma (1964-1976). He was a visiting scientist at the University of Texas at Austin when he died on October 14, 1977. His papers (1925-1977; 8 ft.) document his career from his undergraduate studies (1925) to the year of his death. Extent: 28 ft. Language: Collection material is written in English. Repository: Archives of American Mathematics, Center for American History,The University of Texas at Austin
Biographical Note:
William Thomas Reid was born October 4, 1907, near Grand Saline, Texas, and attended college at Simmons (now Hardin-Simmons) University in Abilene, Texas. His M.A. and Ph.D. (1929) were obtained at the University of Texas at Austin. He was National Research Fellow (1929-31) and then a faculty member (1931-44) at the University of Chicago. Reid was professor of mathematics at Northwestern University (1944-59), University of Iowa (1959-64), and University of Oklahoma (1964-1976). He was a visiting scientist at the University of Texas at Austin when he died on October 14, 1977. Reid's research concerned differential equations, calculus of variations, and optimal control. He devoted particular attention to the relations between the theory of differential equations and extremum principles. During World War II he served as consultant in mathematics to the Army Air Corps and served in the Pre-Meteorology program. He was chairman of the subcommittee on examinations of the War Policy Committee of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America.

Homogeneity, randomness, and homomorphisms
A graph (or more general relational structure) is homogeneous if any isomorphism between finite induced subgraphs extends to an isomorphism of the graph. Surprisingly, in view of the rigidity of almost all finite graphs, a countably infinite random graph is homogeneous with probability 1: indeed, it is isomorphic to a particular graph, the Rado graph, with probability 1. All countable homogeneous graphs are known; the others are not "random" in any reasonable sense, though they are all residual in the sense of Baire category (another interpretation of the phrase "almost all". Recently, Jaroslav Nesetril and I have investigated the analogue of homogeneity for graphs and posets, where "isomorphism" is replaced by "homomorphism" (or "monomorphism" in the definition. The talk will also touch on other kinds of structure.

Calculus of Variations and Mathematical Existence in the Nineteenth Century
We tend to approach mathematics of the past from our perspective today: understanding of earlier developments is shaped by what happened later. Nevertheless, a better historical understanding of a given subject will result from a comparison with what came before, from a study of the origins and background of the development under consideration. The subject of mathematical existence came to the forefront of various branches of analysis in the nineteenth century. The recurring interest in existence questions after 1830 represented a new theoretical tendency in mathematics, one that was not present in the writings of eighteenth-century masters of analysis.

i koll. G4, Institut for Matematiske Fag Professor Craig G. Fraser A History of the Multiplier Rule in the Calculus of Variations Abstract The multiplier rule is a fundamental tool in the calculus of variations. In modern treatments of the subject, for example in Oskar Bolza's authoritative "Vorlesungen ueber die Variationsrechnung" (1909), the rule is used to provide a general formulation of the variational problem. An application of the rule is required in order to deal with all but the most simple problems. In contrast to the situation in the ordinary calculus or in mechanics, where the rule provides a useful but special method of solution, the multiplier rule in the calculus of variations is a powerful result that occupies a fundamental place in the whole theory.
Although methods equivalent to the multiplier rule for special variational problems were developed by Euler and Lagrange in the middle of the eighteenth century, the first general statement of the rule in the calculus of variations was presented by Lagrange in his analysis textbooks of 1797 and 1806. Various justifications of the rule were given throughout the nineteenth century, often without a clear awareness of the mathematical issues involved in a fully acceptable proof. The first proof which incorporated a clear understanding of the mathematical basis of the rule was published by the Leipzig mathematician Adolph Mayer in 1886. In the next thirty years mathematicians would develop several additional and distinct derivations of the rule.
