Branch of Science Physicists Nationality Austrian Boltzmann, Ludwig (1844-1906) Austrian physicist who established the relationship between entropy and the statistical analysis of molecular motion in 1877, founding the branch of physics known as statistical mechanics Boltzmann's statistical interpretation led him to conclude that entropy -decreasing processes were exceedingly improbable but not absolutely impossible. It also paved the way for the development of quantum mechanics, which is inherently a statistical theory. Boltzmann argued that the equipartition theorem was a fundamental feature of the kinetic theory. He also derived the " H-theorem " and Boltzmann equation in his paper of 1872. The H-theorem expresses the increase in entropy of an irreversible process. Because of Boltzmann's dense and difficult style, his work was disseminated only after its exigesis by Ehrenfest in 1911. Boltzmann is buried in the Central Cemetery in Vienna. Gesellschafts- und Kulturgeschichte; Salzburg) Albert Topitz (IMAGE Kommunikationsdesign GmbH; Hallein/Salzburg) Fifty years have now elapsed since the end of National Socialism and the Second World War. In 1945, Austria was liberated and occupied by Allied troops - Americans, Englishmen, Frenchmen and Soviets. A round-numbered anniversary such as this motivates us to reflect upon these historic events, and provides both a tangible and impelling opportunity to once again bring together those who first confronted each other in 1945 as "liberators and liberated," "victors and vanquished," "occupiers and the occupied." Thus, we came up with the idea of a twofold dialogue. We have interviewed Austrians on the subject of their remembrances of the so-called Era of Occupation and, in particular, their encounters with American soldiers. With these Austrian impressions, including photos, letters, school essays, children's drawings and newspaper articles from the postwar years, we are now erecting an overseas communications bridge - to former GIs who were stationed in Austria between 1945 and 1955, to their relatives and friends and to all others interested in this subject. FICHA Nacionalidad: Austria Viena 20-2-1884 - Duino, Trieste 5-9-1906 Estudia en la Universidad de Oxford. Tras doctorarse en 1866, se dedica a impartir clases en diferentes universidades de Alemania y Austria. Su aportación a la termodinámica es fundamental, como muestran sus publicaciones. Una de ellas sostenía que la segunda ley de la termodinámica se explicaba a partir del movimiento de los átomos. Otra de sus contribuciones a la ciencia, concretamente, a la teoría cinética, fue la formulación del Teorema de Equiparación de la energía, que establecía los grados de libertad de la partícula. Junto con Josef Stefan es autor de la ley de Stefan-Boltzmann. Otro de los asuntos que abordó fue la teoría atómica , aunque sus trabajos nunca fueron aceptados ante la falta de pruebas que demostrasen la existencia de los átomos. Como dato anecdótico cabe citar que en su lápida se inscribió su ecuación: S = K LnW, que define la entropía como el grado de desorden de un sistema. Durante años fue miembro de la Academia de Ciencias de Viena.
