Early years
Born in Copenhagen to Christian Bohr and Ellen Adler , Bohr received his doctorate from Copenhagen University in . He then studied under Ernest Rutherford in Manchester England . Based on Rutherford's theories, Bohr published his model of atomic structure in , introducing the theory of electrons travelling in orbits around the atom's nucleus , the chemical properties of the element being largely determined by the number of electrons in the outer orbits. Bohr also introduced the idea that an electron could drop from a higher-energy orbit to a lower one, emitting a photon (light quantum ) of discrete energy. This became the basis for quantum theory edit
Middle years
In , Bohr became a professor at the University of Copenhagen, and director of the newly constructed "Institute of Theoretical Physics" in . In , he was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics for developing the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics Bohr was largely affected by the philosophy of Søren Kierkegaard of sharp sudden "quality" changes and rejection of the continuous changing. These concepts were manifested in Bohr's

    Copenhagen Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics
As the theory of the atom, quantum mechanics is perhaps the most successful theory in the history of science. It enables physicists, chemists, and technicians to calculate and predict the outcome of a vast number of experiments and to create new and advanced technology based on the insight into the behavior of atomic objects. But it is also a theory that challenges our imagination. It seems to violate some fundamental principles of classical physics, principles that eventually have become a part of western common sense since the rise of the modern worldview in the Renaissance. So the aim of any metaphysical interpretation of quantum mechanics is to account for these violations. The Copenhagen interpretation was the first general attempt to understand the world of atoms as this is represented by quantum mechanics. The founding father was mainly the Danish physicist Niels Bohr, but also Werner Heisenberg, Max Born and other physicists made important contributions to the overall understanding of the atomic world that is associated with the name of the capital of Denmark. APHK , p.51). The term is rather a label introduced by people opposing Bohr's idea of complementarity, to identify what they saw as the common features behind the Bohr-Heisenberg interpretation as it emerged in the late 1920s. Today the Copenhagen interpretation is mostly regarded as synonymous with indeterminism, Bohr's correspondence principle, Born's statistical interpretation of the wave function, and Bohr's complementarity interpretation of certain atomic phenomena.

Denne forsvarede han to år senere.

There are some things so serious you have to laugh at them. It is wrong to think that the task of physics is to find out how Nature is. Physics concerns what we say about Nature. An expert is a man who has made all the mistakes which can be made in a very narrow field. Of course I don't believe in it. But I understand that it brings you luck whether you believe in it or not.

DISCUSSION WITH EINSTEIN ON EPISTEMOLOGICAL PROBLEMS IN ATOMIC PHYSICS N IELS B OHR Originally published in Albert Einstein: Philosopher-Scientist, P. A. Schilpp, ed., pp. 200-41 The Library of Living Philosophers, Evanston (1949). W As is well known, it was the intimate relation, elucidated primarily by Boltzmann, between the laws of thermodynamics and the statistical regularities exhibited by mechanical system with many degrees of freedom, which guided Planck in his in genious treatment of the problem of thermal radiation, leading him to his fundamental discovery. While, in his work, Planck was principally concerned with considerations of essentially statistical character and with great caution refrained from definite conclusions as to the extent to which the existence of the quantum implied a departure from the foundations of mechanics and electrodynamics, Einstein's great original contribution to quantum theory (I905) was just the recognition of how physical phenomena like the photo-effect may depend directly on individual quantum effects . In these very same years when, developing his theory of relativity, Einstein laid a new foundation for physical science, he explored with a most daring spirit the novel features of atomicity which pointed beyond the whole framework of classical physics.
