Ikke alene var han en af tidernes mest navnkundige danskere, men selv den dag i dag anses han som værende en af verdenshistoriens mest betydningsfulde videnskabsmænd. Ungdommen Niels Bohr blev født i København den 7. oktober 1885. Faderen var den internationalt anerkendte fysiolog Christian Bohr. Det gjorde, at hjemmet ofte besøgtes af kulturpersonligheder og forskere fra mange forskellige videnskabsgrene. Dermed havde Niels en opvækst i et intellektuelt stimulerende miljø. Vigtig for Niels var ligeledes den to år yngre bror, Harald. I voksenlivet blev lillebroderen en anerkendt matematiker, og gennem hele livet havde han en væsentlig indflydelse på storebroderens virke. Brødrene begrænsede sig imidlertid ikke til åndens arbejde. Begge spillede de fodbold. Således var Niels i 1905 målmand på AB's førstehold. For Harald gik det endda endnu bedre, han kom på landsholdet, og var ved Londons olympiske lege i 1908 med til at bringe en sølvmedalje med hjem til Danmark. Efter afsluttet studentereksamen i 1903 påbegyndte Niels Bohr fysikstudiet ved Københavns Universitet. I 1909 blev han mag.scient, hvorefter han straks gik i gang med sin doktordisputats. Denne forsvarede han to år senere.

Hij bevorderde de formulering van een nieuwe filosofische en wiskundige benadering en beschrijving van de structuur van het atoom en de atoomkern, en stond aan de wieg van de nucleaire geneeskunde. In politiek opzicht sprak hij zich uit voor meer openheid tussen 'Oost' en 'West', gezien de ruimte- en atoomwapenwedloop die in zijn tijd plaatsvond. Op 24 oktober 1957 ontving hij de allereerste 'Atoms for Peace Award'. Bohr stichtte zijn Instituut voor Theoretische Fysica in Kopenhagen. Op 7 oktober 1985 werd officieel het Niels Bohr Instituut in Kopenhagen geopend, dat onder meer het Niels Bohr Archief beheert. Bohr's zoon Aage is eveneens natuurkundige en ontving in 1975 de Nobelprijs voor de Natuurkunde. Niels Bohr was een zoon van Christian Bohr, een fysioloog en Ellen Adler. He studied at the Univ. of Copenhagen (Ph.D. 1911) and carried on research on the structure of the atom at Cambridge under Sir James J. Thomson and at Manchester under Lord Ernest Rutherford. In 1916, Bohr became professor of theoretical physics at the Univ. of Copenhagen, and in 1920 he was made director of the Institute of Theoretical Physics, which he was instrumental in founding. Rutherford had discovered the nucleus of the atom in 1911, but classical theory was unable to explain the stability of the nuclear model of the atom. Bohr provided the solution to this problem in 1913, when he postulated that electrons move around the nucleus of the atom in restricted orbits and explained the manner in which the atom absorbs and emits energy. He thus combined the quantum theory with this concept of atomic structure. Much of the knowledge of modern physics was made possible by Bohr's initial revolutionary assumption that atomic processes cannot be explained by classical laws alone. Bohr was a leading figure in the continuing development of the quantum theory over the next twenty years. He received the 1922 Nobel Prize in Physics.

For this work he received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1922. He developed the so-called Bohr theory of the atom and liquid model of the atomic nucleus. Early life  Bohr's father, Christian Bohr, professor of physiology at the University of Copenhagen, was known for his work on the physical and chemical aspects of respiration. His mother, Ellen Adler Bohr, came from a wealthy Jewish family prominent in Danish banking and parliamentary circles. Bohr's scientific interests and abilities were evident early, and they were encouraged and fostered in a warm, intellectual family atmosphere. Niels's younger brother, Harald, became a brilliant mathematician. Bohr distinguished himself at the University of Copenhagen, winning a gold medal from the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters for his theoretical analysis of and precise experiments on the vibrations of water jets as a way of determining surface tension. In 1911 he received his doctorate for a thesis on the electron theory of metals that stressed the inadequacies of classical physics for treating the behaviour of matter at the atomic level. He then went to England, intending to continue this work with Sir J.J. Thomson at Cambridge.

Home Niels Henrik David Bohr Renowned physicist and Nobel Prize laureate Niels Henrik David Bohr was born on October 7, 1885 in Copenhagen, Denmark. His mother hailed from a wealthy Jewish banking family and his father was a physiology professor at the University of Copenhagen. Bohr had two siblings, one of which, Harald Bohr, would later become a distinguished mathematician. During his childhood, Bohr was already demonstrating a penchant for understanding how things work, often fixing instruments, such as clocks, that needed repair. He excelled in his studies and graduated from high school in 1903. He was then accepted at the University of Copenhagen and there embarked on an impressive academic career in physics. Bohr's thesis concerning the determination of surface tension through vibrations of water jets garnered him a gold medal from the Royal Danish Academy of Science in 1907. After graduation that same year, he decided to stay on to pursue his Masters, which he received in 1909, and his doctorate, awarded in 1911. Bohr, primarily interested in electromagnetism and atomic theory, was awarded a travel grant by the Carlsberg Foundation in 1911. He planned to spend a year at the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge for research, but only stayed for a brief period since the director at the time, J.J. Thomson, did not express interest in his ideas. Though discouraged by Thomson, Bohr caught the attention of another physicist, Ernest Rutherford, and traveled to Manchester in 1912 to participate in the construction of his nuclear model of the atom. There he began the work that would dominate his career, but returned to Copenhagen that summer as scheduled, soon marrying Margrethe Norlund, with whom he would later have four sons.
