Absorption lines (n.) Any portion of the electromagnetic spectrum (including visible light) that is trapped by free atoms or molecules in the path of the radiation, thus reducing their transmission. In the climate context, this is important for the greenhouse effect since water vapor, carbon dioxide and methane absorb certain wavelengths of infrared radiation. Adiabatic expansion/compression (n.) Aerosol (n.) Agassiz, Jean Louis Rudolphe Albedo (n.) Meaning "whiteness,” albedo is a measure of the reflectivity of a surface. If a surface has an albedo of 40%, it means that 40% of the light falling on a surface is reflected. The planetary albedo of Earth is its reflectivity as seen from space (near 30%). Also, there is cloud albedo and ground albedo. The ocean, on the whole, has a low albedo, as do forests. The deserts have high albedo, while fresh snow has the highest albedo of the common surfaces on Earth. Alleroed (n.)

The Bjerknes Family: Hooked on Hydrodynamics
Article # : Section : NATURAL SCIENCE Issue Date : 3,330 Words Author : William J. McPeak
The dynamics of water has stimulated thinkers for hundreds of yearsLeonardo da Vinci, Francis Bacon, sometimes even a whole family.
Through three generations the Bjerknes family of Norway shared scientific insights and inspiration as they made significant contributions to the budding science of hydrodynamics, the branch of physics that deals with the motion of water and other fluids. Theirs was a saga beginning with Carl Anton Bjerknes (18251903), proceeding with his son Vilhelm (18621951), and continuing, in turn, with Vilhelm's son Jacob (18971975). Each man, drawing upon family and scientific curiosity, wrote his own chapter in the big book of physical science and its applications.
Carl began the process of looking at hydrodynamic theory. Vilhelm would build upon this and turn to a search for practical application through understanding and predicting atmospheric motion. Jacob, helping his father in this effort, would extend that application by harnessing his acquired intuitive grasp of fluid motion to conceptualize the large-scale movements of air masses that are central to understanding the weather. Jacob also played an important role in enhancing the accuracy of weather forecasting.

    Vilhelm Bjerknes
Vilhelm Friman Koren Bjerknes March 14 April 9 , 1951) was a Norwegian physicist and meteorologist who did much to found the modern practice of weather forecasting Born in Christiania, Bjerknes enjoyed an early exposure to fluid dynamics , assisting his father, Carl Anton Bjerknes, in his mathematical research. In , he became assistant to Heinrich Hertz and made substantial contributions to Hertz' work on electromagnetic resonance. In , he became professor of applied mechanics and mathematical physics at the University of Stockholm where he elucidated the fundamental interaction between fluid dynamics and thermodynamics . It was this work that inspired both V. Walfrid Ekman and Carl-Gustav Arvid Rossby to apply it to large-scale motions in the ocean s and atmosphere and to make modern weather forecasting feasible. Bjerknes himself had forseen the possible applications as early as In , Bjerknes returned to the University of Kristiania before becoming professor of geophysics at the University of Leipzig in . In , he founded the Bergen Geophysical Institute where he wrote his book On the Dynamics of the Circular Vortex with Applications to the Atmosphere and to Atmospheric Vortex and Wave Motion ). From
