BIOGRAPHICAL MEMOIRS National Academy of Sciences Jacob Aall Bonnevie Bjerknes By Arnt Eliassen JACOB AALL BONNEVIE BJERKNES, or Jack Bjerknes as he was usually called, was one of the founders of modern meteorology. He entered the scientific scene at the age of twenty with the discovery of the structure of extratropical cyclones, which became of the greatest importance and formed the starting point of a fruitful development for theoretical meteorology as well as practical weather forecasting. It was Jack's father, the famous physicist and geophysicist Vilhelm Bjerknes, who set the stage for the research leading up to this discovery, but Jack was the principal performer. FAMILY BACKGROUND The name Bjerknes comes from a family farm in southeastern Norway where some of Jack's ancestors lived. Jack represented the third generation in a dynasty of scientists. His grandfather, Carl Anton Bjerknes, was professor of mathematics at the University of Christiania, as the Norwegian capital Oslo was called at the time. He showed both theoretically and by experiment that an ideal fluid would transfer Coulomb-type forces between pulsating spheres and thought that he was on the track of a hydrodynamical ether theory of electromagnetism. Jack's father, Vilhelm Bjerknes, began his career as a physicist working with Heinrich Hertz in Bonn on electromagnetic resonance. In 1893 he married Honoria Sophia Bonnevie, a Norwegian science student in Christiania. They settled in Stockholm, where Vilhelm Bjerknes was appointed lecturer and later professor of mechanics and mathematical physics.

Through three generations the Bjerknes family of Norway shared scientific insights and inspiration as they made significant contributions to the budding science of hydrodynamics, the branch of physics that deals with the motion of water and other fluids. Theirs was a saga beginning with Carl Anton Bjerknes (18251903), proceeding with his son Vilhelm (18621951), and continuing, in turn, with Vilhelm's son Jacob (18971975). Each man, drawing upon family and scientific curiosity, wrote his own chapter in the big book of physical science and its applications. Carl began the process of looking at hydrodynamic theory. Vilhelm would build upon this and turn to a search for practical application through understanding and predicting atmospheric motion. Jacob, helping his father in this effort, would extend that application by harnessing his acquired intuitive grasp of fluid motion to conceptualize the large-scale movements of air masses that are central to understanding the weather. Jacob also played an important role in enhancing the accuracy of weather forecasting.

Home Hoger De synoptische weersverwachting ontwikkelde zich snel na 1860, toen overal op aarde meteorologische diensten werden opgericht. Nationale Weerdiensten: In 1868 werden tijdens de stormen op de Grote Meren in de Verenigde Staten meer dan 3000 schepen beschadigd of naar de bodem gejaagd en verloren ongeveer 530 mensen het leven. Dit leidde tot een wetsvoorstel in het Congres, dat in 1870 door president Ulysses S. Grant werd goedgekeurd, en voorzag in de oprichting van de eerste officiële weerdienst. Dit was de meteorologische afdeling van de verbindingsdienst van het Amerikaanse leger, beter bekend als het Weerbureau. (zie schilderij rechts) De Bergense School: Een belangrijke stap voorwaarts werd tussen 1918 en 1923 gezet door een groep Skandinavische meteorologen onder leiding van Vilhelm Bjerknes (1862-1951; foto links) die bekend werd als de Bergense School. Deze meteorologen brachten de theorie naar voren dat de achtiviteit van het weer is geconcentreerd in betrekkelijk smalle zones, die de grenzen vormen tussen warme en koude luchtmassa's. Zij noemden deze zones 'fronten' een term uit de krijgskunde. Al snel werd bevestigd dat deze fronten inderdaad een belangrijk deel van ons weer veroorzaken en men ging dan ook methoden ontwikkelen waarmee meteorologen de bewegingen van deze fronten met vrij grote nauwkeurigheid konden voorspellen.
