From Where I Sat: Garrett Birkhoff (1911–1996)
Philip J. Davis
He was not one of your bland personalities. Anyone who had anything to do with him soon came away with strong reactions. He was born with a mathematical spoon in his mouth, and this, added to his own remarkable mathematical talents, often led him to exhibit an hauteur rarely seen this side of an Oxbridge High Table. He was handsome and debonair. When I first met him, tweeds, dark flannels, brown leather loafers, and bow ties were de rigueur, and Garrett could have posed for a plate in a “History of Academic Dress.” None of the green bag, then canonical in Harvard Yard, for him—he carried his notes in a leather attaché case, a statement of suave aloofness. When I was a fledgling “section man,” he once reprimanded me for lecturing without a suit jacket. (It was during a summer term in a pre-air-conditioned world.) His father was George David Birkhoff (1884–1944), a Harvard mathematician of enormous international reputation, with whom Garrett was occasionally confused. To be the child of a famous parent is not an easy role, and I think he suffered from living in his father’s shadow. In his public lectures, he not infrequently referred to “my father,” as though his audience would know whom he meant and oblivious to the fact that as the years rolled on they increasingly did not. He may also have suffered from his own precocity. Garrett rose rapidly in the scientific world. In 1940, when he was 29, his Lattice Theory was published in the Colloquium Series of the American Mathematical Society. By 1941, A Survey of Modern Algebra, written jointly with Saunders Mac Lane, was a runaway success as an undergraduate text. The book brought undergraduate mathematical teaching in the United States into the 20th century of structuralism, a point of view that the “Young Turks” of the generation, of whom Garrett was one, were vigorously promoting. With excellent exposition, with the right selection of material, with the right level of abstractness, with a good spread of problems, and with the authority of two distinguished researchers, it achieved that magic balance that subsequent textbook writers would strive for.

Garrett Birkhoff 's father was G D Birkhoff who also has a biography in this archive. Garrett was educated at home until he was eight years old when he began to attend school. This first school was a public grammar school (public school here is the American meaning so is the opposite of a private school) which he attended for three years then, rather than enter high school at this young age, he spent a year enjoying himself playing sports and maturing before entering Browne and Nichols school at the age of twelve. Unlike his first school, Browne and Nichols was a private school. At Browne and Nichols high school he had an excellent mathematics teacher in Harry Gaylord who had written a textbook with . Again, as at his primary school, Garrett progressed very rapidly and despite going to Europe with his parents during his third year of study he was still ready to take the examinations a year early. His parents had encouraged him to do this because they were going on a major year long tour and so, after passing the examinations, Garrett attended a boarding school at Lake Placid for a year, spending much time on sport, before he entered Harvard University in 1928. Before he entered Harvard, Birkhoff's father pressed him to decide on what profession he would eventually follow. That was when [2]:-

Birkhoff, George David Birkhoff, George David, , American mathematician, b. Overisel, Mich.; father of Garrett Birkhoff. The son of a physician, he was educated at Harvard (B.A., 1905) and the Univ. of Chicago (Ph.D., 1907) After teaching shortly at Chicago and Princeton, he joined the faculty at Harvard (1912) where he taught until his death. Birkhoff, perhaps the first American mathematician of international repute, is known for his work on linear differential equations and difference equations. He was also deeply interested in and made contributions to the analysis of dynamical systems, celestial mechanics, the four-color map problem, and function spaces. In addition he wrote on the foundations of relativity and quantum mechanics and on art and music, e.g., Aesthetic Measure See his Collected Mathematical Papers (3 vol., 1950).
