Lleva cosigo una carta de presentación para D'Alembert y gracias a su apoyo consigue una plaza de profesor en la Escuela Real Militar de París. En 1773 es nombrado miembro asociado a la Academia de las Ciencias de París. En 1784 sucede a Etienne Bezout como monitor del cuerpo de artillería y examina en 1785, desde este puesto, al joven de 16 años Napoleón Bonaparte. En 1785 es nombrado miembro de pleno derecho de la Academia de las Ciencias de París. Durante este año comienza a dar clases en la Escuela Normal Superior.

Irène Passeron évoquait l'attribution de l'ACI pour la publication du volume III-11 (D'Alembert et l'Académie des Sciences) sous la responsabilité d'Hugues Chabot. Elle rappelait l'attribution par le CNRS d'un Groupe de Recherche (GDR) dont on ignore encore le montant, le CNRS nous demandant en échange la parution, d'ici 2007, de 5 volumes parmi 8 proposés. Puis, Pierre Crépel dressait un inventaire en 9 points des questions à aborder (l'avancement des volumes en cours, la série IV, les tables analytiques, les activités périphériques, les questions transversales, l'édition électronique, la série II, les thèses et les séminaires). S'engageait ensuite une discusion sur chacun de ses points... Mardi 6 janvier: Après avoir résumé les axes de son mémoire de DEA sur les cordes vibrantes chez D'Alembert, Guillaume Jouve évoquait les points que devrait aborder une introduction aux Mémoires 1 et 25 des Opuscules. Il présentait une proposition de tables analytiques de ceux-ci et enchaînait sur un mémoire de D'Alembert daté de 1755 et portant sur les cordes vibrantes. Cet écrit resté inédit est en quelque sorte une première mouture du premier Mémoire des Opuscules. Même si les deux mémoires se ressemblent par beaucoup de côtés, il faut les publier tous les deux compte tenu de leurs différences. Plusieurs questions éditoriales étaient ensuite abordées.

It has been edited to include the names of all authors, places of publication, and publishers. Related titles have been placed under a guide name or title. Arrangement is by author, title, and date of publication. The note field indicates the number of copies held and observations on the books in general, working from the cover to the title page. Variations in different copies are noted thereafter, including occasional identifications of Indiana schools or libraries where the books were used. Be aware that these notes are not exhaustive and a great many of the books contain annotations, doodles, etc. The Floyd Family is responsible for donating about half the books in the collection, with the rest coming from ISU alumni, school teachers, collectors, and antiquarian booksellers. The emphasis of the collection is on English curriculum materials, social studies, etc., but the 242 mathematics textbooks in the Floyd Family Collection are a source of study in methodology and popular history, to name only two possibilities. Johann Heinrich Lambert (1728-1777) gives series solutions of trinomial equations: x p + x + r = Etienne Bezout (1730-1783) tries to find solutions of polynomial equations of degree n as linear combinations of powers of an nth root of unity, but fails. Euler tries to find solutions of polynomial equations of degree n as linear combinations of powers of an nth root, but fails. Joseph Louis Lagrange (1736-1813) expresses the real roots of a polynomial equation in terms of a continued fraction. Lagrange expands a function as a series in powers of another function and uses this to solve trinomial equations. Lagrange shows that polynomials of degree five or more cannot be solved by the methods used for quadratics, cubics, and quartics. He introduces the Lagrange resolvent, an equation of degree n! Euler gives series solutions of: x m+n + ax m + bx n John Rowning (1699-1771) develops the first mechanical device for solving polynomial equations. Although the machine works for any degree in theory, it was only practical for quadratics.
