Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel
German astronomer and mathematician, the first person to find the approximate distance to a star by direct methods when he measured the parallax (annual displacement) of the star 61 Cygni in 1838. In mathematics, he introduced the series of functions now known as Bessel functions.
Bessel's work laid the foundations of a more accurate calculation of the scale of the universe and the sizes of stars, galaxies, and clusters of galaxies. In addition, he made a fundamental contribution to positional astronomy (the exact measurement of the position of celestial bodies), to celestial mechanics (the movements of stars), and to geodesy (the study of the Earth's size and shape). In 1840 he predicted the existence of Neptune.

Born: 22 July 1784 in Minden, Westphalia
Died: 17 March 1846 in Königsberg, Prussia
Wilhelm Bessel's father was a civil servant in Minden. Bessel attended the Gymnasium in Minden for four years but he did not appear to be very talented, finding Latin difficult. The fact that he later became proficient in Latin, teaching himself the language, probably suggests that the Gymnasium failed to inspire Bessel. In January 1799, at the age of 14, he left school to become an apprentice to the commercial firm of Kulenkamp in Bremen. The firm was involved in the import-export business.
At first Bessel received no salary from the firm but, as his accounting skills became appreciated by the firm, he received a small salary. Interest in the countries his firm dealt with led Bessel to spend his evenings studying geography, Spanish and English. His interests turned towards navigation and he considered the problem of finding the position of a ship at sea. This in turn led him to study astronomy and mathematics and he began to make observations to determine longitude.
In 1804 Bessel wrote a paper on Halley's comet, calculating the orbit using data from observations made by Harriot in 1607. He sent his results to Heinrich Olbers, the leading comet expert of his time, who recognised at once the quality of Bessel's work and Olbers gave Bessel the task of making further observations to carry his work further. The resulting paper, at the level required for a doctoral dissertation, was published on Olbers' recommendation. From that time on Bessel concentrated on astronomy, celestial mechanics and mathematics.

This talking book comes with an interactive ''magic pen'' that works like a hand-held computer mouse pointer. Children can opt to turn the paper pages and listen to the story read with different voices for each character. Or they can interrupt the read-aloud session to play with the magic pen (permanently attached with a wire). They can point the pen tip to any word on a page and hear it pronounced, or touch a picture and hear a sound effect (such as ''Strike one!'' for the baseball bat). Very similar to the popular Living Books computer games, this 10-by-11-inch book is more portable than a home computer. Stories in this set include Lil's Loose Tooth, Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever, and Winnie the Pooh in A Sweet Good Morning. The set also includes a paper piano keyboard and map and human anatomy games. Gail Hudson

Popri zamestnaní študoval jazyky, geografiu, princípy navigácie a neskôr astronómiu a matematiku. Èlánok poslal astronómovi Wilhelmovi Olbersovi a ten ho umiestnil do svojej novej knihy Monatliche Correspondenz a poprosil Bessela o spoluprácu s observatóriom v Lilenthale.

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716) arranged with the support of electoress Sophie Charlotte the establishment of a scientific foundation in Berlin/Brandenburg in the year 1700 AD, the "Societaet der Wissenschaften", of which he became the first president. The first astronomer of the foundation became Gottfried Kirch (1639-1710) who did his observations at the private observatory of the privy councillor von Kroseck (see above). Kirch got help from his son Christfried and his wife Maria Margareta (1670-1720), who discovered the Comet of 1702. The building of the private observatory remained until 1905 within the former Berlin district Neu Coelln. Then it was removed in favor for an office building. Under management of the society of sciences at the beginning 18th century the (old) Berlin Observatory was build within the Dorotheen municipal in the Marstall (the royal stable, see above). At January the 15th, 1711 the first meeting of the society took place within the five floor tower at the Letzte Str. (since 1822 Dorotheenstr., 1949-1995 Clara-Zetkin-Str., then Dorotheenstr. again). The society was replaced 1744 by the "Preussische Akademie der Wissenschaften", the prussian academy of sciences, founded by Friedrich II., called Friedrich The Great or The Old Fritz. The astronomical institute relating to the observatory was financed totally by the proceeds of the monopoly for calendar calculation until 1811. In this period among others Johann Bernoulli III. 58. Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel

http://www.vialattea.net/eratostene/tempesti/bessel.html
Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel (1784-1846)
