1667, Basel - 1748, Basel Johann Bernoulli was the tenth child of Nicolaus and Margaretha Bernoulli. He was the brother of Jacob Bernoulli but Johann was twelve years younger than his brother Jacob which meant that Jacob was already a young man while Johann was still a child. The two brothers were to have an important influence on each others mathematical development and it was particularly true that in his early years Johann must have been greatly influenced by seeing Jacob head towards a mathematical career despite the objections of his parents. As to his education as a child, Johann wrote in his autobiography that his parents:- ... spared no trouble or expense to give me a proper education in both morals and religion. This religion was the Calvinist faith which had forced his grandparents to flee from Antwerp to avoid religious persecution. Nicolaus and Margaretha Bernoulli tried to set Johann on the road to a business career but, despite his father's strong pushing, Johann seemed to be totally unsuited to a future in business. Johann's father had intended him to take over the family spice business and in 1682, when he was 15 years old, Johann worked in the spice trade for a year but, not liking the work, he did not do well. It was with great reluctance that Johann's father agreed in 1683 to Johann entering the University of Basel. The subject that Johann Bernoulli was to study at university was medicine, a topic that many members of the Bernoulli family ended up studying despite their liking for mathematics and mathematical physics.

Johann Bernoulli
His parents tried to set Johann Bernoulli on the road to a business career but, he disliked it immensely. It was with great reluctance that Johann's father agreed in 1683 to Johann entering the University of Basel to study medicine. There he took courses in medicine but he studied mathematics with his brother Jacob, who lectured on experimental physics there. It soon became clear that Johann's time was mostly devoted to studying Leibniz's papers on the calculus with his brother Jacob. After two years of studying together Johann became the equal of his brother in mathematical skill. In 1694 he considered the function y = x x and he also investigated series using the method of integration by parts. He had great success in integrating differential equations. He summed series, and discovered addition theorems for trigonometric and hyperbolic functions using the differential equations they satisfy. As a result he was offered the chair of mathematics at Groningen. Johann Bernoulli married and had several children, three of which also became mathematicians: Nicolaus, Daniel, and Johann. Johann competed with his brother in what was becoming an interesting mathematical tussle but an unfortunately bitter personal battle. He solved the problem of the catenary which had been posed by his brother in 1691. He proposed and solved the problem of the brachristochrone in June 1696 and challenged others to solve it, his brother and Leibniz succeeding. Not to be outdone, Jacob proposed the isoperimetric problem. Johann's original solution was less than satisfactory, but he returned to the problem later and produced an elegant solution which was to form a foundation for the calculus of variations. After his brother died, he returned to Basel to fill Jacob's chair of mathematics, where he made important contributions to mechanics with his work on kinetic energy.

Johann Bernoulli
(Aug. 6, 1667 - Jan. 1,1748)
The Bernoulli family was probably the most notable mathematical family in world history. There were ten notable intellectuals over three generations. The three most significant were Jacob, Daniel, and Johann. Also of importance were Johann's brother Nicolaus I, Nicolaus I's son Nicolaus II, Johann's sons Nicolaus III and Johann II, and his grandsons Johann III, Jacob II, and Daniel II. However, Johann made the biggest name for himself, so we will focus on his life, and methods that resulted in his contributions to modern mathematics. Below is a list of his personal information.
PERSONAL FACTS
He was born in Basel, Switzerland on August 6, 1667. He died in Basel, Switzerland on January 1, 1748. He enrolled in Basel in 1683; began to study medicine in 1685. He was schooled at Basel University and earned a M.A. and M.D. He received the medicine license in 1690. In 1694, he received a doctoral dissertation in Iatromathematics. He was called the "Grandseigneur of the science of mathematics" On a darker note he had a rocky relationship with Jacob and Daniel; he frequently took part in belittling chatter with the former, and once deliberately plagiarized one of the latter's papers.

JOHANN(I) BERNOULLI
BORN: July 27, 1667 in Basel, Switzerland
DIED: January 1, 1748, in Basel, Switzerland
Johann(I) was the son of Nicolaus Bernoulli, younger brother of Jakob(I) and Nicolaus(I) and father to 3 sons, of whom the most notable one is Daniel(I). His other two sons were Nicolaus(I) and Johann(II). Johann's calling in life, as proposed by his father, Nicolaus, was to become a merchant and take care of the family's trading interests. However Johann avoided this by studying medicine and becoming a physician. Although this wasn't what his father had in mind, it kept Johann away from mathematics. It appeared that his father's choice of careers for him had permanently dissuaded the young Johann from becoming mathematically minded, but after writing his doctoral thesis in 1690, he became so heavily involved in studying the calculus that he did so until his death in 1748. It was Johann's older brother Jakob who tutored him in mathematics in the beginning. It was considered that Johann was a jealous man who not only didn't get along with his brother, but it is said he was responsible for his son Daniel leaving home for winning a prize for which Johann had competed as well. There was a bitter resentment between the two brothers, but they still chose to share ideas and work together. They also worked with Leibniz and between the three of them came up with the contents of many of our basic calculus textbooks we use today.

  • recurring decimals, and
  • theory of equations.

Among the great editions of scientific works of the 17th and 18th centuries, the Bernoulli Edition occupies a special position; unlike, for example, the Leibniz and the Euler Edition , it is dedicated not to a single author, but to a group of nine closely related authors. The Bernoulli Edition presents a critical, fully annotated edition of the collected works and correspondence of these authors. It includes their scientific publications, the most important of those texts which exist only in manuscript form, and an extensive selection of their correspondence, for the most part hitherto unpublished.
The Bernoulli Edition establishes an authoritative version of the source texts, starting from either the original publications or the manuscripts. The commentaries facilitate access to the historical texts for the modern reader by providing interpretative introductions, explanatory notes and indexes. All texts are printed in the original language (mainly Latin and French); the commentaries are mostly in English (in the past, some volumes have been annotated in French, German or Italian). Copious illustrations present figures from original printings as well as samples from holographs.
