(Or IBN 'EZRA). A celebrated Spanish Rabbi The Book of the Secrets of the Law The Mystery of the Form of the Letters The Enigma of the Quiescent Letters The Book of the Name The Book of the Balance of the Sacred Language The Book of Purity [of the Language] are perhaps the most important of his works of this kind. They were written during his life of travel, and they reflect the unsteadiness of his outward circumstances. Taking Aben-Ezra's work as a whole, it consists rather in popularizing Rabbinic Andalusian ideas on Latin and Saxon soil than in producing original thought. Rabbi Ben Ezra lived in Muslim Spain. Little is known of his life except that he was on friendly terms with the eminent poet and philosopher Judah ha-Levi, who some historians believe was ibn Ezra's father-in-law. Ibn Ezra made his reputation as a scholar and a poet. It is recorded that during this period of his life, up to 1140, he travelled to North Africa and possibly visited Egypt. From 1140 to 1160 ibn Ezra's life changed markedly. He was forced to wander throughout Europe during this period and he eventually settled down in Rome, then Lucca, for a few years before his death. An illuminated manuscript, or megillah, of the story of Esther, containing an acroustic verse composed by Abraham Ibn Ezra, "Those who read the megillah, sing joyous songs to God, for it was a time of exultation for Israel." - Library of Congress Rabbi, grammarian, scriptural commentator, poet, philosopher, numerologist, and astrologer / astronomer Abraham Ibn Ezra was born in Tudela, Spain, during the Golden Age of Jewish culture in that country. He was a friend and colleague of the philosopher and poet Judah ha-Levi, whose daughter he married. By 1140, three of Rabbi Ezra's children had died and his one surviving son had converted to Islam. Ezra began wandering Europe as a poor scholar, writing his famous treatises and poems and visiting England, Italy, Egypt, and Palestine. Ezra re-introduced Hebrew grammar to Europe. Hebrew grammars at the time were written in Arabic, and most European Jews outside Spain had forgotten Hebrew grammar entirely. The rabbi wrote a new grammar which became immensely popular, and he also introduced the decimal system to Jews in Europe. Rabbi Ezra died in Calahorra, Spain. Robert Browning's "Rabbi Ben Ezra" was based on him.
